KUALA LUMPUR: The government will monitor retrenchments. Thosewho lose their jobs as a result of the

global economic crisis will be given help sothat they can be absorbed by sectors in needof workers.

For this purpose, the government will form two committees – to track jobterminations and potential retrenchments,and to provide assistance for the retrenchedin the form of reskilling and retrainingprogrammes.

“We hope it will not happen but lookingat the other countries, this is alreadyhappening. We have to be prepared toaddress it,” Human Resource MinisterDatuk S. Subramaniam said yesterday.

Subramaniam had met representativesfrom the Malaysian Employers Federation,Malaysian Trades Union Congress, NationalUnion of Plantation Workers and chambersof industry earlier to discuss measures toaddress potential labour problems becauseof the economic crisis.

He said the representatives from thechambers pointed out that many factorieshave cut production because of reduceddemand and, therefore, there is likely to bestaff reduction.

Subramaniam said the first committee,the Employee Retrenchment MonitoringCommittee, will study likely retrenchment situations and work with employers to findalternative ways to help the workers.

“For now, there is no problem but thereare predictions that next year we will facebigger problems. However, we do not want

Liu pleads not guiltyPETALING JAYA: Selangor executive councillorRonnie Liu pleaded not guilty in a magistrate'scourt here yesterday to a charge of abetmentin obstructing a public servant from discharginghis duty in November last year.

The DAP central committee member andstate local government, study and researchcommittee chairman is accused of abetmentin obstructing Subang Jaya Municipal Councilenforcement officer Mohammad HadzimZulkapli in an anti-vice operation at Hotel Chileon Jalan Kenari 6, Puchong, near here, on Nov2 last year.

Liu, 50, who is the state assemblymanfor Pandamaran, was charged under Section109 of the Penal Code and can be sentencedunder Section 186 of the code, which carries a

maximum prison term of two years or a fine ofRM10,000, upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Roslan Abu Bakarasked the court to set bail at RM5,000 in onesurety.

Liu's counsel, Gobind Singh Deo, applied forLiu to be released on a personal bond on thegrounds that the alleged offence took place in2007 and the authorities had since not takenany action.

Magistrate Mohamad Ibrahim MohamadGhulam set bail at RM3,500 in one surety andfixed Feb 10 for the case to be mentioned.

Liu’s brother John provided the bail, Bernamareported.
