From the Pastor...
“Goals”
Today, more than ever before, the world is on a quest for fortune, fame
and pleasure. Many seem to believe the attainment of fame and fortune
will bring happiness and contentment. Sadly, there are many wealthy,
unhappy people in the world. Oftentimes, goals are set and we spend a
lifetime working for things to satisfy our selfish desires. This mindset
(spirit of selfishness) has caused so many to drift away rather than draw
closer to God.
“Instant gratification” is the order of the day. We want what we want and
we want it “right now.” So, our goals are often set based on “instant
gratification.” Many leaders across the country build their messages
around “having it all now.” Are these goals realistic for everyone? Is it possible that these desires
can become stumbling blocks and a way for evil to invade our hearts? My answer to these ques-
tions is “yes!”
Brothers and sisters, we are blinded to the more important things in life when our goals are self-
centered. As we set goals and strive to accomplish them, always remember the devil is the ultimate
source of the evil urge for instant pleasure (gratification). The reality of it all is that these desires
can become obsessions and, in some cases, various addictions. When we allow our desires to spiral
out of control, the devil has an open invitation to steer us away from God and toward futile goals
and aspirations.
Our primary goal in life should be to please God and Him only.
Congratulations

Congratulations to Brother David Langston Stewart who received the rank of Eagle
Scout. Brother Stewart’s scouting journey began in Rock Island, Illinois in 2001
and culminated with an Eagle Scout Court of Honor held on Thursday, May 12 in
the Boone-Lacy Fellowship Hall.
The Eagle is the highest recognition that Scouting offers to Scouts. It is earned
through the advancement program, and only a small percentage of boys who begin
in Scouting receive this honor. The wearer of the Eagle award is the epitome of
Scouting’s best efforts and beliefs.
As his Eagle Scout project, Langston chose to beautify the flagpole area at the Downtown Rescue Mission located at
1400 Evangel Drive, Huntsville. The project included preparing the ground
and laying the power line to flagpole, building a gravel walkway around the
flagpole, installing two lights on each side of the flagpole, planting year-round
flowers in the flower bed and installing borders for the walk and flower bed.
With the help and encouragement of his scoutmasters, Mr. Kevin Nash, Mr.
Daryus English, Mr. Carl Johnson and Mr. David Stewart (father) and troop
156 scouts Josh English and Treydarion Morrow, they were able to successful-
ly complete the project in a timely manner. Langston wanted to prepare an
area outside where the residents could go to lift their spirits and be reminded
of the beautiful things God has made.
Brother Stewart is a senior at Buckhorn High School and the son of Brother David and Sister Cheryl Stewart. He
plans to attend Middle Tennessee State University in the fall.
Eagle Scout Ceremony
~~~~~~~~~~
As many of you know, the journey of a scout involves various levels of achieve-
ment as we work toward the highest honor of Eagle Scout. We are required to
complete projects in order to earn badges.
My goal is to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout before my 18th birthday. Becoming
an Eagle Scout is a distinctive honor. Eagle Scouts are recognized for their accom-
plishments by their peers, troop leaders, employers, college recruiters and affords
you an opportunity for higher ranking if you choose to join the military. Best of
all, the President of the United States acknowledges your achievement and sends a
certificate of congratulations!
The time I’ve spent in school so far has taught me the importance of gaining as much knowledge as I can. With that
thought in mind, I wanted to do something that would allow the next generation of kids access to books that would
help to increase their knowledge. After all, they are our future! So, I decided that my project would be to donate
books to the Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. The coordinator was very pleased and thanked me for the
time and effort put into this work. With the completion of this project, I have attained the rank of Star Scout.
Thanks to Pastor Davis for allowing me the opportunity to work within the church to accomplish this goal. Thank
you, Union Chapel for all your donations.
The Wellness Ministry is a ministry of the church whose primary focus is
the health and welfare of the congregation. Medical emergencies are
managed during worship services with the assistance of Ushers, Deacons
and Laymen Ministries. As a ministry, we provide current health news
and information via printed material, guest speakers and seminars. Minis-
try members are present during worship services and other times to answer
questions and refer members to various medical specialties if needed for
further treatment.
In addition to the monthly presence in the foyer, the Wellness Ministry
hosts three major annual events: 1) blood pressure screening, 2) blood
sugar screening and 3) breast cancer awareness in October where every-
thing and everyone is swathed in pink. The highlight of “Pink Sunday” is
the releasing of pink balloons by church members in honor of breast can-
cer survivors.
Meeting times: Second Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Anyone interested in joining is welcome. The only suggested re-
quirement is that members be CPR certified. Deacon Anthony Lacy serves as our shepherd deacon and provides
guidance and leadership within the scope of the overall church vision as given by our pastor, Dr. O. Wendell Davis.
Congratulations on receiving your high school diploma
and college degree. The true meaning of a Christian's
life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not
expect to sit. Commit to the Creator whatever you do
and your plans will succeed.
the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you
an expected end.”
