Theatre Arts 1 is an introductory performance class designed for students who are interested in learning

Tech Theatre 2, 3, & 4
Tech Theatre 2, Tech Theatre 3, and Tech Theatre 4 provide a workshop atmosphere for students to have
the opportunity to learn various aspects of technical production by designing and building for shows.

Production Theatre
Production Theatre is a class designed for the advanced theatre student who is involved in all of the
major productions in the department. This will be a workshop atmosphere that will include production
meetings, work on the shows, and plans for other co-curricular theatre activities. Leadership training,
management, and individual development, research, and projects are emphasized. Production
participation (including after school production work) is required of all Theatre Production students.
Project assignments vary by production and will be assigned in class. Prerequisite: By audition only;
2020 Production Class auditions will be April 2, 2020, from 3-5 PM in the Black Box (Room 7012).

Orchestra
There are five performing orchestra classes at GOHS, grouped by ability level. Students must complete
an audition in order to be placed into an orchestra. Chamber and Symphony Orchestras will have a
higher percentage of upperclassmen while Philharmonic, Camerata, and Sinfonietta will have a higher
percentage of underclassmen. All Orchestra students participate in concerts, UIL and TMEA events.
Students are given opportunities for mental and physical discipline, citizenship through group endeavor,
physical conditioning, cultural growth, skills in making musical value judgments through critical
listening, skills in music theory, and proper instrumental techniques. Attendance at out-of-school
rehearsals and performances is required. Open to orchestra string instrumentalists only.

Choir
Choir is a fine arts elective and performance based class. Students are taught the skills and
techniques for healthy singing through different genres of repertoire. This includes classical and
pop. Students perform in a minimum of 4 concerts per year and can also choose to participate in
several singing competitions. We also perform at pep rally's, have fun social events, take trips,
and end the year with pop show!

No prior knowledge is needed

Wind Ensemble
This is the top band of 4. This highly advanced ensemble features the best players we have at
Grand Oaks High School. We play extremely difficult music and study professional-level
musical concepts. Nearly all of the students in this ensemble study their instrument with a private
instructor and most of them own their own instrument. This groups competes at UIL Concert and
Sight-Reading Contest and any other competitive concert band contest we decide fits our
program. Entrance into this ensemble is by audition only.

Marching Band
This includes every student in the program. It is a requirement for Wind Ensemble, Symphonic and
Concert Band I and is highly encouraged in Concert II. This is the most visible part of the GOHS Band
program. We begin membership selection for this group each year in May. Mandatory rehearsals for this
group begin in late May and continue in late July through the beginning of school. This group performs
at all football games and various marching band contests throughout the fall semester. To be considered
for a spot in the competitive marching band show, students need to be signed up for band before May
10th. There is a mandatory fair share fee for members of this group.

Color Guard
In color guard, we are a team of members who perform choreographed dances and routines with various
equipment to enhance and interpret the music of the marching band/winter guard show. We use various
equipment including flags and rifles, along with other props. We perform using our equipment (flag, rifle,
prop, etc.), and emotional connections to the audience to enhance the meaning and feeling of our show.
In the Fall semester we perform and compete with the marching band at football games, and marching
band competitions. During the Winter semester, we compete on our own against other color guard
programs in the greater Houston area in an activity called Winter Guard. In color guard you will make
friends, create memories, and have so many opportunities to perform. Come try it out!

Dance I-IV
Students will learn and perform dance through a broad presentation of skills, technical terminology,
historical background, cultural and artistic diversity. Students are given the opportunity to experience
movement physically and visually; experimenting/exploring within the creative process of
group/individual choreography through the dance genres of ballet, modern, folk/social, jazz and ethnic.

Art Appreciation
This is a one-year foundation course. Application of the fundamentals of design will be used to develop
basic skills and techniques as well as an understanding and appreciation of historical and contemporary
art and artists. This course is taught from a survey of Art perspective with limited studio activities in
