The Williamsport Music Education Department
Our ambitious objective is to provide quality comprehensive and balanced music education offerings to students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The program’s foundation is a K-12, sequentially-structured, activity-oriented classroom music program that culminates in senior high electives (Digital Recording, Guitar, Jazz-Rock-Contemporary Music, AP Theory, and Mu-sical Theatre). The band, orchestra and choral programs develop from the concepts established in the classroom using music literature of the highest quality to develop individual and ensemble musicianship. A staff of 18 music specialists provides music education in 8 buildings for over 5,400 students. The program has 60 ensembles in which over 1,500 students in grades 4-12 have the opportunity to perform.
Williamsport is proud of its music education program. Williamsport has been recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education for thirteen of the past fourteen years (AMC-NAMM) and Williamsport Area High School has been selected as a Grammy Signature School, or semi-fi-nalist, in fourteen of the past fifteen years. The general music program has received local, state and national recognition. We are one of the few districts in the region with a full string program. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has selected our special education music program as a model program and featured it in a state-wide telecast. The Music Educators National Conference honored the district in 1985 with their Exemplary Program Award. They cited the district’s “con-cern for quality education extending from kindergarten general music to the advanced senior high performing groups. The WASD has twice received the Kennedy Center Alliance-PA Department of Education Best Practices Award for “excellence in Art education.” The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities selected the district as “a school system striving to offer high quality arts education to all students.” Williamsport’s Board of School Directors has twice received Pennsylvania’s nomination for the Kennedy Center/National School Boards Association Award for their support and recognition of the importance of arts in their schools. The selection com-mittee “was particularly impressed with the depth of the Williamsport’s arts education program across visual arts, music, dance and theater. In addition to excellent visual arts, music, dance, and theater curricula, Williamsport goes the extra step to be involved with artist-in-residence and per-forming arts groups brought to their community by other area arts organizations.” Yamaha’s New Ways magazine profiled the district and recognized it as “one of the finest programs nationally.” The Instrumentalist magazine included the department’s annual report as a model communica-tion-PR tool.
By working closely with community and regional resources, we have been able to expose our students to some of the world’s greatest talent. Featured guest artists and clinicians have included Wynton Marsalis, Judy Collins, Yo Yo Ma, Emanuel Axe, James Walker, Leon Bates, The King’s Singers, the American Boy Choir, Leahy, Billy Taylor, Edgar Meyer, Turtle Island String Quartet, PSO Principal Bass Jeff Turner, Maynard Ferguson, Chris Vadala, Tim Lautzenheiser, Fran Kick, Barrage, Bowfire, Dallas Brass, Boston Brass and the D.C. based Marine, Air Force, Navy and Army service bands and choirs.
The District’s ensembles and staff have been presented at numerous state, regional, and national conferences. Select ensembles have been featured at performances at the White House and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion.
