Earth’s Water

Limited Supply

Never new water, always the same

Water cycle allows us to have water

Three States Solid

Liquid

Gas

Water Cycle Overview

Evaporation Water changes from liquid to gas

Water vapor collects in the air

Evaporates from lakes, oceans, puddles, etc.

Evaporation Experiment

Step 1: fill a glass measuring cup with water

Step 2: wait one day and mark the new water level

Step 3: repeat step 2 over several days and compare thenew water level to the original level

You will see evaporation!

Condensation

Water vapor in the air changes from a gas to a liquid

Cool temperatures cause this

The liquid collection forms clouds

Condensation Experiment Step 1: fill a glass with ice

Step 2: let it sit on the counter for a few minutes

Step 3: observe the water droplets that appear on the outside of the glass

How did they get there?

Condensation

Precipitation Clouds can only hold so much water

They get heavy and the water must leave

Forms

Rain

Sleet

Snow

Hail

Collection Water falls back to earth and could land

In oceans, lakes, rivers, etc.

On land

Water on land may runoff into a body of water or become groundwater

Groundwater Water that seeps into the ground following

precipitation
