The Need & Opportunity Globally, the massive growth of telephone penetration, cf China
0.5% (1990) to 80% (2010), and of the Internet (15% globally by 2010) has changed the way the world does business. The next wave of wireless – personal and object based realtime context – will enable an even greater transformation of industry
In the next 20 years, sustainability in healthcare, transport, energy and other sectors will require them to function in new ways
This transformation represents a major global opportunity but also provides many challenges, both technical and cultural
Low cost solutions are needed that can be applied globally on a massive scale
Companies need to work across traditional boundaries and mindsets
www.mobilevce.com
© 2011 Mobile VCE
::innovation to application::
Approach VCE is building upon existing mechanisms to
Bridge experience, culture and mindsets across industries, applying emerging wireless ICT to create new service concepts, business models & market opportunities
Accelerate such opportunities by building relationships, cross-fertilising ideas & facilitating collaborative R&D
Encourage member companies to challenge traditional thinking, to share vision, learn & innovate together, to create new possibilities
Involve new universities, SMEs and mid-tier ICT companies, thereby identifying resources and routes to rapid prototyping and development of the ideas and innovations that emerge.

::innovation to application::
Membership Changes To allow this VCE has made changes to its membership
structure, inviting new members from: Mid-tier and SME companies
Key application industries which are facing transformation, such as health, transport and energy
Universities, to widen the breadth of academic skills available to its industrial members
These will to join its existing global operators & manufacturers, and its existing University members, enabling new things to be undertaken
www.mobilevce.com

::innovation to application::
Mechanisms VCE is creating new ways of working to extend its activities,
inter alia: Sector Working Groups to bridge industries and mindsets
These will enable players within industry sectors to explore shared interests, develop new ideas and bring these forward as White Papers and Members Seminars.
Cross-Sector Group One key to delivering global telephony & internet penetration was the
adoption of common global standards. Health, transport, energy, education etc have many common requirements in terms of technical enablers – capabilities such as identity, privacy, security, location, etc
New R&D collaborative projects amongst member companies To apply wireless ICT into healthcare, transport, energy etc
Mechanisms for BigCos to source needed technology in new ways SMEs with relevant technologies to contribute to projects, possibly
on a funded basis
www.mobilevce.com

::innovation to application::
Working with Innovative SMEs Mechanism: Facilitated, intelligent, brokerage based on a
knowledge of our member companies interests
Example: SIM-based authentication/identification for online payments
Identity management / m-payment / fraud prevention Status: Beta stage product, demo developed with MNO available
CallSign UK startup with $0.5m angel investment (Silicon Valley) Strong technical background in security Prior relationships with banking & big retail players
VCE has made targeted MNO introductions, with a view technology demos, aiming at wider partnerships, investment & a commercial pilot in 2012

::innovation to application::Example: Openia
User Experience Quantification & Analysis Opportunity to commercialise the User Behaviour software from the TSB-
supported Instant Knowledge programme Potential for improving user-device interaction, monitoring usage of
applications & content (eg mobile, kiosk, TV) VCE exploring operator & handset manufacturer interest

Ensuring the Future
Industry needs to know what new technologies will be emerging, but no longer can do it all – VCE pioneered open innovation within its member community before the phrase existed
‘Seed & Feed’ – a way for companies to ensure the future ‘Seed’ – watch progress and, when a research area gets hot, use
the technical reports & meet with the team to ‘seed’ a new in-house activity. Get it up and running quickly.
‘Feed’ – manage internal programmes to build upon and be complementary to VCE research, thereby stretching the internal research budget
A company’s R&D radar – a ‘window on the future’ Access to experts – through building long-term relationships,
companies grow to understand Univs’ real areas of deep expertise Easy access for placing direct contracts when needed

Partnership & Cost Sharing Value through trusted relationships & insights
Visions activity – strategic enabler of new foci (cf Green Radio) More than just a financial multiplier (but that helps)
Core Projects – typically 40x financial multiplier Industry-defined programme based around shared vision Cost - £45k (2011) company subscription Value - £2m (2011) of research (plus other benefits)
Elective Projects – typically 4-6x financial multiplier Initiated – by an individual company, with others joining in Size – typically from £25k to £250k Number of companies engaged – typically 1-6 Projects can be done that might otherwise ‘fall off the budget’ Ideas emerge that would not within a single company

::value::Industrial Members derive many benefits…
Industry led Vision – co-create future vision, product & service concepts with the global manufacturers, operators & application sectors
Window on the Future – early warning of trends, threats & opportunities Research & Innovation – define & steer VCE core projects to ‘feed’ existing
in-house company activities and to ‘seed’ new ones Cost effective – VCE funded R&D is typically 40x annual subscription
Shared Cost & Strategic R&D Projects Collaborative projects – initiate R&D with other member companies –
potential partners, suppliers, or customers – within the VCE framework or outside, eg private partnerships, with TSB, EC Framework etc
Application projects - work with application sector companies, using VCE’s collaborative culture, to bridge mindsets & industries to co-create new cross-industry opportunities
Access to Resources – University testbeds, SMEs, experts, consultancy, seminars & the
VCE patent portfolio (35 granted patent families) Staffing – recruit industry-aware, ‘known quantity’, research staff Training – develop research & innovation skills through participating Funding – support to access 3rd party grants for secondments, R&D, etc

New Joiners during 2H11
VCE membership runs the full Calendar year, January-December
Normal situation - full membership fees apply, regardless of when a new member joins during the year. Member has access to all outcomes from that calendar year.
However, VCE has widened its remit in 2011 to embrace application industries, mid-tier players, SMEs and collaborating universities and wishes to secure momentum behind this transition. VCE wants its new industrial members to have early visibility of, and the opportunity to shape, its industry vision and next phase of activity.
For these reasons, companies joining in 2H11 have a unique opportunity to join now, receiving membership for 2011 and 2012 at a significantly reduced cost
Full details of membership options and application forms are available from the VCE office
