What to do?
Cultural visits: RED PATRIMONIO GUADALTEBA
Festivities and Gastronomy
Guadalteba G
The Region of Guadalteba
T he visitor can enjoy numerous and entertaining tourist attractions that will make their stay an unforgettable and exciting experience in burgeoning nature – whether it has
being planned by the visitors themselves or by any of our many travel agencies that operate in the area.
From the mountains to the small inland sea formed by the reservoirs of Guadalhorce, Guadalteba and Conde del Guadalhorce and including the countryside, the Region of Guadalteba surprises the visitor with the diversity of its scenery. The region also houses a great number of animals and plants and counts with two natural reserves: The Natural Gorge of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes – also known as ‘El Chorro’ –, and the Natural Reserve of Lagunas de Campillos, both of which have an incalculable landscape and natural value.
Water sports: The reservoirs of Guadalhorce, Guadalteba and Conde del Guadalhorce are the perfect environment to practice water sports such as fishing, windsurfing, sailing or canoeing, among others. It is worth mentioning that motorboats are prohibited in each of the three reservoirs.
Air Sports: Escuela de Vuelo de Teba (Air School of Teba) has its headquarters in Guadalteba. This school is part of the ‘Estaciones de
The Region of Guadalteba is located in the north of the province of Málaga, between Ronda Mountain Chain and Antequera Valley. Due to its orography and history, this region presents a wide range of tourism opportunities ranging from the practice of extreme sports to interesting cultural visits. All these activities offer maximum quality in all services: from accommodation for all kind of budgets to carefully planned visits and a typical gastronomy based on local products like those derived from pork, olive oil, goat cheese and vegetables – many of which are produced ecologically.
The Region of Guadalteba
Vuelo Libre de Andalucía’ (Andalusian gliding airfield network) and counts on a team of experienced professionals that will confidently guide those interested in this activity.
Other activities: We offer a network of hiking tracks with the necessary signposting and specially design as a mountain-bike riding path. The impressive rocky formations of our region – accordingly signposted and included as a landmark in a Geologic Route – invite the visitor to practice sports like rock climbing in worldwide known places such as ‘El Chorro’ or the similarly challenging Cañete la Real Mountain, with plenty of pre-defined climbing routes. As for the practice of speleology, the Cave of Ardales is without a doubt the main attraction due to its magnitude. The access to the cave is regulated in an attempt to preserve the many prehistoric cave paintings discovered in its interior. Horse riding classes or some laps in Campillos Karting Circuit can be the perfect alternative to enjoy your stay with us.
Certainly, one of the many attractions of our region is its historic heritage, which includes all historic periods from Prehistory to Modernity. That is why we have invested special effort and
commitment in putting in value these tourist resources.
The Prehistoric Route offers the possibility to enter a “time travel machine” and explore the remotest past through archaeological remains and sites of international renown. The route includes the Interpretation Centre of ‘Prehistory in Guadalteba’ and the Prehistoric Cave of Ardales, as well as the museum of ‘Tartessos in Guadalteba’, located in Almargen. The Archaeological Museum of Teba and the Visigoth Necropolis of Peñarrubia, in Parque Guadalteba, Campillos, structure the Antiquity and inform us on how our ancestors lived and worked. The Middle Ages was a period of great unrest in Guadalteba, a place where the two presiding cultures of the world never lived in peace. The shores of the rivers Turón and Guadalteba were the border between Islam and Christianity, which had their first confrontation during the revolt lead by the revel Omar Ibn Hafsún. Hafsún had his headquarters in the city of Bobastro (Ardales), where the rebel built
the first Mozarab churches that led to the clash between the kingdoms of Granada and Castile. This military confrontation mobilized more than 10,000 warriors during the 14th and 15th centuries and witnessed the construction of impressive fortresses such as the castles of Teba, Cañete la Real, Peña de Ardales and Turón – all of which count with their own museums.
Finally, Red Patrimonio Guadalteba does not forget our most recent history, and recommends the visitor to tour Carratraca (the only village in Málaga declared Site of Cultural Interest by the Autonomous Community of Andalusia). There you will be able to admire the architecture of the famous 19th century spa of medicinal water. In addition, in the area of the reservoirs, the visitor can walk and contemplate the scenery of Conde de Guadalhorce dam, the commemorative stone chair of King Alfonso XIII, the impressive vertical walls of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge and the footbridge that path that hangs through it called Caminito del Rey.
In the region of Guadalteba, festivities and gastronomy are two concepts difficult to differentiate. The majority of the festivals and events in Guadalteba are related to the food production
in the area. Some examples can be the Asparagus Fair in Sierra de Yeguas (April), the Handmade Cheese Fair in Teba (first weekend of October) and the Pig Slaughter Fest in Ardales (February). With a more ethnographic theme, the Festival of the Moorish Moon fills Carratraca with music shows and other cultural performances for a whole weekend in September. We cannot forget Semana Santa which has been declared of National Tourist Interest in Campillos and in Carratraca is famous for the annual theatrical play of the Passion of Christ in its Bull Ring.
From our most popular and rooted-in gastronomy we must highlight due to their singularity the ‘porra’ and artisanal cheeses from Campillos and Teba, the almond cookies from Ardales and the ‘piononos’ and ‘pestiños’ made by the nuns in Cañete la Real, without forgetting all the different types of olive oil, cold meats, grilled pork dishes, artisan potato chips, ‘piquitos’ breadsticks…
