From The Coordinator Another senior fair has come
and gone with great success. This was
the first year we held the fair at the
Eclipse Center and the committee and
participants all had positive comments.
In talking with John Kalkirtz, former director of
Grinnell, I pointed out that we had gone full circle.
Many years ago, when the Beloit Mall was open, the
Senior Fair actually was held there. We then moved
to Central Christian Church on Milwaukee Road.
We are now back in the former location after out-
growing the church. The committee extends a sin-
cere thank you to staff and members of Central
Christian for the many years of hosting our annual
fair.
As we move into the last two months of the
year, I am excited to announce that we have some
wonderful membership options coming up in De-
cember. We will offer a Regular Membership, as
well as a Premiere Membership, that gives you dis-
counts from local merchants all year long! Details
and costs on these memberships will be in the De-
cember newsletter and you may begin signing up on
Monday, December 2.
I am also happy to report that we are going to be
partnering with the Beloit Public Library in a varie-
ty of ways in the coming year that will bring the joy
of reading and many exciting programs to a larger
number of people. This month, Tina Kakuske, head
of adult services, will be the “guest facilitator” at our
November book club. For more information on
this, see page 4. Check out what we are offering
this month and share it with a friend who hasn’t been
here. Enjoy the month, have a blessed Thanksgiv-
ing and we will see you at Grinnell!

Nellie’s Nook Donations Needed Grinnell’s Gift Shop is named “Nellie’s Nook in honor
of Nellie Clark. Nellie lived in her home on the
grounds where Grinnell now stands
for over 60 years. The home was de-
molished in the 30’s to make room
for Grinnell Senior Center. Some say
Nellie is prone to making visits eve-
ry now and then, just to check in on
things! The items we sell in the gift
shop are all donated to us and proceeds go to help us
continue our activities at Grinnell. We are in need of
more fashion jewelry (gently used) as well as fashion
scarves. We are also searching for household items,
such as small appliances and dishes, serving bowls,
etc. We are not able to accept clothes due to limited
space. Items can be dropped off at Grinnell anytime
between 8 am and 4 pm Monday through Friday.
Hours To Change For Senior Center Beginning Monday, November 4 operating hours at
Grinnell will changed to better accommodate the
usage of the building. We will be opening at 7:30
a.m. and closing at 4:00 p.m. Monday through Fri-
day. We are closed on Saturday and Sunday.
Sunday, November 3 at 2 a.m.
Thank You To Alliant Energy Foundation for the $1,000 grant that helped us purchase our new computerized

Grand Parenting is Great! Grandchildren can add so much energy to their grand-parents’ lives and grandparents add so much
enrichment to their grandchildren’s lives. However, at times our best inten-tions don’t go as smoothly as we’d like. We’ll look at how we talk with
children when conflicts or problems arise to teach them how to think more clearly. When we use a prob-lem solving approach, children get less frustrated and feel better about themselves. We’ll also have a few surprises for the holidays. Taught by Kathy Hetzel, UW Extension Rock County Family Living Educator, Kathy has parenting and grand parenting experience of her own, along with 10 years of experience as a parent educator with UW-Extension. Join us on Thursday, November 14 at 10:00 am for this useful and fascinating class! Please call and pre-register. There is no charge for this class.
Make Your Own Christmas Card Join instructor, Theresa Niles, for an afternoon of cre-ativity and fun. On Thursday, November 14 from 1:00 p.m. - 3 p.m. you can create your own paper crafted Christmas card. Using the dual tech-niques of paper folding and quilling, you can make a unique card you will be excited and proud to send to your loved ones. No previous experience is required, and the class is open to both members and non-members. You will be able to take your fin-ished card home the same day! The cost is just $2.00 to cover supplies, and we ask that everyone pre-register for the class. To register, you may sign up at the front desk or call the office at 608-364-2875.
Scarf Tying Workshop Ladies, do you admire the many beautiful scarves in
stores and wish you knew how to wear them? The holidays are approaching and with a few simple techniques you can look stunning and fashionable! You and your friends need to be at Grinnell Hall on
Friday afternoon, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. for an exclusive workshop in scarf tying. Mary from Mary’s Unique Boutique in New Glarus will demonstrate how to use scarves to update your ward-robe without spending a lot of money. The class is free, delicious snacks will be served, and you will enjoy an afternoon of fashion and fun. Mary will also have scarves available for purchase, just in case you fall in love with one! There is a limited number of participants for this workshop, and we will sign people up on a first come, first served basis. Get your name on the list soon! Stop in at Grinnell and sign up at the front desk, or call 608-364-2875.
Taking Care of Yourself—Naturally! Many times there are simple, natural ways to solve minor health issues, WITHOUT resorting to drugs. Join us on Monday, November 11 at 1:00 p.m. to listen as Rose Slaght shows tips and techniques for
utilizing products you have in the home. She will talk about the many uses of ap-ple cider vinegar and discuss a few uses for essential oils. You will be able to make and take home a small
item that you can use to pamper yourself! Stay health-ier in a natural way! There is no charge for this class, but the information you receive will help you save money! The class is open to both members and non-members and pre-registration is required. To register, please call 608-364-2875 or stop in and sign up at the front desk.

Grinnell Bookies Welcome Guest Facilitator
This month our readers will discuss the book Cyprus Point by Diane Chamberlain. Throughout the world, few golf courses are as revered as Cali-
fornia’s Cypress Point Club — not just for its breath-taking
beauty but for its architectural significance.
Located on the Monterey Peninsula along the
white sands and steep cliffs that border the
Pacific Ocean, the beauty of Cypress Point is
the equal of its more famous neighbor Pebble
Beach. Unlike Pebble, however, the history of
Cypress Point has been relatively unknown.
That is, until now. The book club will meet on Monday, November 18 at
1:00 p.m. New members are always welcome. This month we are pleased
to welcome guest facilitator Tina Kakuske, head of adult services at the Beloit Public Library.
Hearing Screening Scheduled This Month Dr, Shayla D. Crays Smith from Beloit Hearing will be at Grinnell on Tuesday, November 12 from
10:00 a.m. through 11:00 a.m. for hearing screen-ings. This is a free service, but you must make an appointment. Call Grinnell at 608-364-2875.
Discover Natural Stress Relief The holidays are upon us and with that comes the
hustle and bustle of the season. Don’t let it overwhelm you this year. Carve out 15 minutes just for yourself and discover the benefits of a chair massage. Each month we offer chair mas-sages by Kathy Pann, licensed massage therapist. Kathy will be
at Grinnell on Wednesday, November 20. Her ap-pointments begin at 11:30. The cost is just $12.00 for a 15 minute massage. Call Grinnell at 608-364-2875 to make your appointment.
Just For Vets - Vet’s Coffee Our monthly Vet’s Coffee will be held on Tuesday, November 5th at 8:00 a.m. and again on Thursday, November 21 at 1:00 p.m. If you are a vet and have not stopped in and checked out this group, we urge you to do just that! It is simply a friendly group of men and women who share a background of service to our company. They meet in the Vet’s Room here at Grinnell and visit. It is a positive, upbeat group that just want to enjoy an hour or so of friendship. We hope to see you there!
Donations Needed We are in need of donations of coffee (both decaff and regular) and cookies. Donations help defray the cost of purchasing these items. We go through a large amount of coffee each day, so your donations are ap-preciated. Simply drop it off at the front desk.

Relieve Chronic Pain - By Breathing! Many times chronic pain sufferers can find a bit of re-lief by learning how to relax and breathe. It is not easy to do in our fast paced society. Geri is at Grinnell on the first and third Wednesday of each month. In No-vember, she will be here on November 6 and Novem-
ber 20. The class begins at 3:00 p.m. While there is no charge for this class, we do require that you sign up ahead of time as there is a limited number of people that can participate in each session. Call today and begin learning how to control the pain and stress that have been interfering in your life! Call 608-364-2875.

Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Rock County, Inc. November, 2013
November 2013 Issue | 9
A Word From
Executive Director
Robert W. Harlow
This month I would like to rec-
ognize the RSVP Board of Directors. These volun-
teers oversee the operations of RSVP and work with
me in developing policies, monitoring financial in-
formation, reviewing and assessing program effec-
tiveness and quality, fundraising, implementing spe-
cial events and other activities as needed. Many of
the Board members are still working in their own
careers while others are retired. They come from a
variety of backgrounds and provide information and
knowledge which is valuable to the overall success
of our programs. They all have a deep appreciation
for our volunteers and a strong commitment to in-
suring the sustainability of this wonderful program.
Our by-laws dictate that Board members must leave
the Board for one year after serving two consecutive
three year terms. Many of the Board members have
served multiple times. The Board meets monthly,
alternating between Beloit and Janesville for meet-
ings since some members are from southern Rock
County and others from northern Rock County. Be-
low is a picture of our current Board.
I am always interested in meeting with people who
would like to consider being on the Board. If inter-

Beloit Senior Fair Did you get a chance to attend the Beloit Sen-
ior Fair on October 1? If you did, you know that the
theme was Racing into Health and Wellness and there
was an actual race car on display.
The car was provided by Robert Hansberry,
who drove it in a race on September 28th. Unfortu-
nately the car was badly damaged in a collision in the
4th to the last lap of that race. Robert, his father,
brother in law and brother spent the weekend repairing
it so that it could be the focal piece of the Senior Fair.
Robert is the son of our Seniors Volunteering for Sen-
iors program coordinator, Patty Hansberry.
This years Senior Fair was held at the Eclipse
Center and there were over 80 exhibitors with room
for many more. Since parking was somewhat difficult
people attending were transported to and from their
vehicles by RSVP Executive Director Bob Harlow and
retired Beloit Senior Center Director John Kalkirtz
driving golf carts. Musical entertainment was provided
by Bill Stevens and John Solis, Veterans Service Of-
ficer. The weather was perfect and everyone seemed
to have a good time. We strongly encourage all of our
volunteers to attend a Senior Fair for a fun and in-
formative time. We at RSVP want to thank our volun-
teers JoAnn Petersons, Kathryn Bakke and Jeanne
Wieland for helping at the registration table.
Rock County Senior Fair
The Rock County Senior Fair and Expo is being
held at the Holiday Inn Express on Friday, Octo-
ber 25th. If you have never experienced a Senior
Fair you should take the time to visit this one and
see what Rock County has to offer.
As hard as it is to believe, it is November already
and Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. The
staff and Board of Directors want to wish all of
our wonderful volunteers a very Happy Thanks-
giving.

Seniors Volunteering For Seniors
Dennis began volunteering for us in February of 2011. He has been taking numerous people
for doctor’s appointments, for groceries and just about
everything else the program offers. Dennis has taken
a man from Clinton to Janesville 3 days a week so he
could do a day program. He takes Jesse to her doctor
appointments. Not only does he take her but he helps
make her next appointments so he can take her again.
Jesse and Dennis have been together since shortly af-
ter Dennis started. Most recently Dennis started tak-
ing Wayne to his radiation treatment, once a day dur-
ing the week. Dennis has been there to take Wayne
Wayne Phillips (left) Dennis Dorst (right) every day except two and on those days he was taking
Jesse instead. Thank you Dennis for all you do, you make a big difference in the lives of oth-
ers. Would you like to be part of SVS taking someone to their doctor appointments, for grocer-
ies, being a friendly visitor, providing respite relief or making phone calls so people can stay at
home? Contact Patty Hansberry at 362-9593 or 756-4281.

More Senior Pedestrian Safety
While crossing signals and crosswalks are installed to protect the pedestrian, you cannot always depend on
them. After all they are only signs or lines painted on the street. They will not stop the inattentive driver!
In a perfect world there are sidewalks on all streets. Unfortunately this is not a perfect world. If you must
walk on the side of the roadway, always walk facing traffic. Stay as far from the pavement as possible and
keep your head up watching for the driver who may not have his mind on what is going on around him.
How many times have you been walking down the sidewalk and been surprised by someone backing out of or
pulling into a driveway? You must always treat driveways as you would treat an intersection. Pause, look
into the driveway for lighted taillights and listen for engine noise. Look to the street side to make sure that no
one is pulling in. There is one other place you should look left-right-left. Parking lots are another place
where a pedestrian must use extreme caution. People have a tendency to drive like they are the only ones in
the world in a parking lot. They seem to think that the rules of the road do not apply. When walking in a
parking lot, watch for lighted taillights, listen for engine noise and watch for drivers taking a short cut be-
tween parking spaces, or those who want to beat another car to a parking space. Here left-right-left should be
accompanied by looking forward as well as over your shoulder. Never step out between parked cars without
looking to make sure it is safe.
SAFETY ADVICE FOR CARS AND OTHER
OBJECTS THAT SCREEN YOU FROM A DRIVERS VIEW ♦ Before stepping off the curb, be sure that all vehicles in the roadway have stopped and that all drivers see
you.
♦ When a vehicle has stopped to let you cross, don’t accept that offer and enter the roadway. There may be
another vehicle overtaking the stopped vehicle. The other vehicle cannot see you because of the stopped
car.
♦ Be careful about stepping in front of a stopped bus, because due to its size it is even harder for an overtak-
ing driver to see you.
♦ When you want to cross in front of any screen, stop at the outside edge of the screen and look around it
for any vehicle that might be coming.

DO NOT RELY COMPLETELY ON SIGNALS
♦ Green does not guarantee that you have the right of way. Green means look and
if it is safe, then go.
♦ The WALK signal does not necessarily mean that it is safe for you to start cross-
ing. Stop at the curb and look to make sure that it is safe.
♦ Always stop at the curb and look for cars from all directions. Exaggerate your
left-right-left looks so that you see any turning vehicles.
♦ Before crossing at an intersection, wait for a fresh green light which gives you the most time. Don’t as-
sume that any cars coming will stop for pedestrians.
♦ When you are in the middle of the road and the DON’T WALK signal starts flashing, don’t stop and return
to the curb. Walk at a maximum comfortable pace until you reach the other side.
Accidents involving backing vehicles occur in streets, in driveways and in parking lots. The driver may not
look carefully enough for pedestrians and rearward visibility from a car is usually poor. If you are crossing
behind a parked vehicle always check to see if they are occupied and watch for them as well as traffic.
1. Look for drivers in vehicles.
2. Listen for engine noise and look for backup lights.
Treat a driveway like an intersection. Slow down and look both ways. A pedestrian may consider the side-
walk non-threatening and fail to recognize that a driveway intersecting a sidewalk may be dangerous. When a
vehicle is backing up in a driveway, the driver’s rear vision may be blocked due to the design of the vehicle or
because the driver is relying on the view from the rearview mirror.

A Note to All Our
Volunteer Stations Every three years RSVP sends
out a document called a Memo
Of Understanding to each of our
Community Partners who at one
time or another indicates the
need for volunteer help. Also
any agency to which we donate
the many items our in-home vol-
unteers make.
It is vitally important to us to
have those Memos signed and
returned to us. If you receive
a Memo and are not sure as to
why, please feel free to call us
at 362-9593 for an explanation.
Hats, Mittens, Scarves and lap
robes, sweaters and wheelchair
walker bags will be available for
the schools and assisted living
facilities the Second week in No-
vember.
According to the National
Center for Injury
Prevention and Control: Falls and hip fractures among
older adults are serious.
More than 1/3 of adults ages 65
and older fall each year.
Among older adults, falls are the
leading cause of injury and deaths
and the most common cause of
nonfatal injuries and hospital
trauma admissions for trauma.
Of those who fall 20% to 30%
suffer moderate to severe injuries
such as hip fractures or head trau-
mas that reduce mobility and in-
dependence and increase the risk
of premature death.
Where Has The Time Gone?
Here is the November newsletter
already! It seems like just last
week that we were closing out
2012 and now 2013 is almost over.
How lucky we were this year, no
tornados very little flooding and
except for some days that the tem-
perature was really uncomfortable
we had a pretty nice summer.
Our gardens flourished and the
flower beds were unusually lovely.
Now fall is upon us and the trees
are turning the beautiful colors that
it seems like only Wisconsin can
produce.
If our luck holds out this will be
one of those wonderful winters
with mild temperatures, only
enough snow to cover the ground,
with a really big snow on Christ-
mas Eve for Santa to arrive in. Of
course it should melt before New
Years and then start getting warm
again.
