Presidents Island Project History
• 1796 map identified it as Grand Island
• 1802 river guide refers to it as President’s Island
• 1865 – served as camp for about 1,500 freed slaves
• After the Civil War, Nathan Bedford Forrest established a penal farm to raise corn and cotton. The county paid 25¢ per prisoner per day
