The Ongoing Concept in Social Media

Jake Peters

Who?

The Ongoing Concept (TOC) is a hardcore band from Idaho. To them, music is not just how heavy they can make it, but how passionate and inspiring they can make it. Its about capturing the hearts of people and making them appreciate music for what it is.

TOC in Social Media

Having discovered The Ongoing Concept through social media myself, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at their overall use of social media as a band.

Record LabelsI first stumbled into The Ongoing Concept's music

video for their lead single 'Cover Girl' through a link posted by their record label, Solid State Records, which I had liked on Facebook.

This is a good example of how important label support can still be in the digital age; online marketing.

Cover Girl

This song, along with its goofy video, was the starting point for many current fans. The band teaches students about originality by singing “Don't be the print of someone else's painting.”

Continuing the Trend

The band continues with the goofy trend on a regular basis, posting many goofy pictures.

The WebsiteTheir website plays a loop of a few clips of video

of the guys being crazy during live shows.

Links to the band's social media accounts can be found in the top right.

Overlap of Platforms

Generally speaking, TOC's Facebook page contains the same posts as both their Instagram and Twitter accounts combined into one.

Bandcamp

The band also has their few year old album still up on Bandcamp. The whole album can be streamed online, and is a cool treat for any big fans wanting to hear more, especially the oddly awesome Jordin Sparks cover. The EP is available for purchase as well.

Big Cartel

Even the band's store is goofy. Showcasing the band as well as others wearing the shirts that are for sale.

Tumblr

In addition, there is a band Tumblr account which showcases funny and silly gifs and photos made by both the band themselves and featured fans.

Audience

The audience the band has latched on to seems to be the fun-loving crowd that appreciates the band's antics both musically and in general.

Sharable Content

Pretty much everything they post is tailored to going viral.

In Real Life

The videos both on their website and tumblr definitely show a commitment to the fans and their act.

Consistency

The band holds weekly “share to enter” contests
