Constable soldfor record price inSt. Aubin auction!
La Baguette celebrates it’s 3rd Christmas!
A Constable Mike Jackson painting that is ...When Isabella Lewis came up with thenovel idea of asking our States Membersto produce a painting to be auctioned offwith proceeds to Jersey Hospice, littlemay she have realised what talent wouldbe unleashed!
Isabella stared her brave venture earlierin the year by delivering 53 blankcanvasses to the States Chamber, requesting that the Members to ‘paintfrom the heart.’
The politicians’ results were auctioned atSt Brelade’s Parish Hall in Septemberunder Murray Norton’s gavel.
On the night, Connétable Ken Vibert’s‘Gronez Castle’ and Deputy Ben Fox’s‘Skateboarding Fox’ each raised £100,with Senator Ben Shenton’s ‘Barcodes’raising £120.
It was however Connétable Mike
Jackson’s watercolour of St Aubin’s Fort
that topped all when it went under the
hammer for a whopping £735.
Other ‘masterpieces’ up for auction
included Senator Paul Routier’s ‘St
Clement’s Millennium Cross’, Senator Jim
Perchard’s ‘Archirondel’, and former Chief
Minister, Frank Walker’s colour pots
inspired ‘Between Holidays’. Other
contributions came from Mrs Joan Birt,
wife of the Bailiff, local artists Diana
Bowen and Joan Turpin, and Ellicia Kaliff.
The auction raised a total of £2,610 for
Jersey Hospice. Mike Jackson told La
Baguette; “My next painting will be my
lounge, but I have no intention of
auctioning that”.

When Connétable Mike Jackson andformer St. Brelade No.1 DistrictDeputy, now Senator SarahFerguson first proposed a Parishnewsletter in their respectivecampaigns, there were those thatthought the idea would never get offthe ground, let alone celebrate tenissues and a third Christmas!
La Baguette has however gone fromstrength to strength largely due totremendous community support, avery willing band of volunteers, andof course, the many parishbusinesses through theiradvertising and generouscompetition sponsorship. It has alsoattracted support from a wide
variety of other local enterprisesand several major business on theIsland. Without this invaluablefinancial support La Baguettesimply could not exist. Thenewsletter is funded entirely bytheir support; it is not subsidised inany way by the Parish or fundedfrom the Parish rates.
Whether it be news-gathering,securing advertising, writingarticles or simply reporting uponthe activities and future plans oftheir own club or association, thereis always room for more helpersand contributors. Then there is thepacking and distribution. This yearLa Baguette has been fortunate to
have had many members of theTwinning Association who, togetherwith many individual helpers, haveunselfishly have given up theirvaluable time to assist in thisimportant task. Connétable MikeJackson, Senator Sarah Fergusonand even the Rector, Mark Bond canoften be found packing away -affectionately known as ‘TheStuffing’ - which has also become agreat social occasion.
Earlier this year La Baguette wasapproached by two parish residentsand photographers, Ian and Julie LeSueur of Kandidprints, kindlyvolunteered to be the newsletter’sofficial ‘snappers’. They have since
covered many events such as Parish
in Bloom, the Maison St. Brelade
Summer Fete and various other
activities and Parish events.

St. Brelade victorious in 2009 Britain in Bloom CompetitionThe story began in the summer of 2008,following the judging of the Island’s Parish inBloom competitions, when St Brelade won theBest Coastal Parish. This achievement meantthat St. Brelade was entered in the finals of TheRoyal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom2009 Competition, in the Small Coastal Resortcategory, for a population under 12,000. The ‘InBloom’ committee had experienced a taste of thiscompetition when the parish took part in the2008 Awards, in which they were runner-up toHerm.
After a year of encouraging the parishioners toplant and tidy, making sure the Parish was asclean as possible, with the public spaces brightlyplanted, the Britain in Bloom judges, DavidLittlewood and Sue Wood came for theinspection of St. Brelade in early August.
Committee members, Reg Langlois and Co-ordinator Margaret Holland Prior travelled toTorquay to attend the RHS Presentations, heldon 25th September.
There they joined with some 450 participants atthe Rivera International Centre for a sparklingpresentation. The tension was high with so manyawards meaning so much to so many people.
The awards began, and each category of finalistslined up beside the stage waiting to be calledforward. Fortunately for St Brelade, the SmallCoastal Award was the fourth on the list, so thewaiting did not continue for too long. St Breladewas the last of the four other finalists; it was anail biting wait. Hayle, South West region, achieved a Silver Gilt; Hunstanton, Anglia region,a Silver Gilt; Lytham, North West region, a SilverGilt; Swanage, South, a Silver. Then it was theturn of St Brelade .... and to the very great delightand surprise of Reg and Margaret, the Parish wasannounced as winners of the Gold Award.
Next was the Category winner. Presenter, MarkWasilewski, vice-chairman of the RHS Britain inBloom Judging Panel, began talking of the winnerhaving sea on three sides and large areas of cliffwalks, the screens showed images of the Parish
and it was announced that St Brelade was the
winner!
Reg and Margaret went on stage, and were
presented with an engraved glass trophy by Toby
Buckland (pictured above). They were also
congratulated by Roger Burnett, Chairman of the
panel of Judges and by Sue and David, the
Category Judges.
Finally, it was the judges’ Discretionary Awards.
St Brelade was nominated for the Floral Award,
the Conservation and Environment Award, and
the Tourism Award. St Brelade’s Bay Hotel won
the RHS Britain in Bloom Commercial Award.
St Brelade achieved more mentions and publicity
than any other community – it was an
extraordinary evening – a true celebration of the
achievements of all in the Parish.

The Parish once againshapes up towards thefestive time of the yearand of course ChristmasDay. My role is to ensurethat all age groups withinour community arecatered for in thetraditional way. Thisranges from a visit bySanta to the Parish Hall on5th December, when Ishall have the pleasure ofgreeting him togetherwith lots of children whowill be donating presentsto the Round TableAppeal. I shall also bevisiting Maison St. Brelade
on Christmas day when I shall have the privilege of seeing severalof our elderly Parishioners who are resident there.
In St. Aubin we have some new festive lights funded in part by theresidents. These will be augmented next year by additionaldecorative displays. I think this phased and shared approach isthe ideal solution to a situation, such as this, which requiressignificant expenditure.
I take this opportunity to thank all those in our Parish whocontribute in a multitude of ways towards the operation of thenumerous clubs, societies and groups that make our communitywhat it is. Likewise, those members of the Honorary Police, themunicipality and the administration and staff of the Parish whoare worthy recipients of my appreciation for all their supportduring the last year.
I conclude by wishing you all my very best wishes for Christmasand a happy and healthy 2010.

New Chef de Police appointedand new Centenier sworn in
Following the retirement of Arthur Morley, Centenier JohnTrafford has been appointed as the Parish’s new Chef de Police.John was first elected as a Centenier in 2008 having served forthree years previously as a Constables Officer. Mike Jackosn said:“As a retired career police officer, and former resident Sergeantin Alderney, Mr Trafford brings a wealth of experience andknowledge to this important role of Chef de Police”.
Stepping up from the position of Vingtenier for Noirmont,Sharon Le Brocq was sworn in as a new Centenier in Octoberfollowing her election in September. Sharon has been a memberof the St. Brelade Honorary Police for 12 years.
Although in recent yearsHalloween has been marred byanti-social bahaviour, this yearSt. Brelade was largely sparedthe bouts of egg throwing thatgave cause for concern andcomplaint by residents, andmotorists, around the LesQuennevais area. CentenierGeorge May told La Baguette:“The evening passed offremarkably quietly with justtwo arrests. The few incidents
of egg throwing were largelylevelled at Police vehicles, notthe general public - as was thecase last year. The Parish had alarge contingent of HonoraryOfficers on patrol, and theStates Police also deployedunits to the Western parishes. To their credit, most of theyouths we encountered weregenerally well-behaved andhad entered into the true‘spirit’ of the occasion”.
Quiet Halloween
As I sit down to write myChristmas message for LaBaguette, we are in that lullbetween RemembranceSunday and Armistice Day.We have all been saddened bythe continuing death toll of somany young servicepersonnel, and, like me, havebeen moved by the poignancyof those occurring at this time.
As we look forward to theChristmas season, start toflick through the cataloguesthat drop through our doorsand browse the enticingdisplays of “ gift suggestions”in the shops, Afghanistanseems a very long way away, and by the time we throwaway our poppies, it will havebeen overtaken in ourconcerns by all the busy-nessof the Christmas season.
But for our servicemen andwomen, Christmas on activeservice is a challengingexperience. Despite the best
efforts of their padrés andcatering officers, it is simplynot possible to recreate whatthey will be missing onDecember 25th, a ‘proper’Christmas. Unlike theChristmas truces of the GreatWar, the Taliban are unlikelyto let up on this ChristianFestival, and for those on thefrontline, there is littleprospect of a ‘Silent Night’.
However, one thing we can dofor our troops is to sendtangible tokens of ourgoodwill and concern forthem, not just in time forChristmas, but during theNew Year. Please take time toread the details of the SupportFor Soldiers [opposite] andthink about what you could doto support them.
St Brelade’s Rectory will be acollection point for completedboxes or donations, and wewill pass them on to theorganisers. Jersey folk have a

great reputation for generosity,
never more so than at
Christmas. So this year let’s
extend a little of that Christmas
spirit to the unknown soldiers
who attempt to bring peace to
another troubled area of our
world.
The first Christmas took place
in an occupied country, and the
Holy Family also became
refugees soon after Jesus’
birth. Something not forget as
we celebrate in safety and
comfort.
With best wishes to you all for
a blessèd and peaceful

Nobody likes to think aboutdeath, particularly their own. However, making preparationsfor death has manyadvantages. The primarybenefit is that you get todecide (within certainparameters set out by Jerseylaw) who you wish to inherityour assets. If you do notmake a Will, this will nothappen, and the law dictateswho will inherit from you andthis will create a situationcalled an intestacy.
Another significant difficultyis that the law currently doesnot permit unmarried couplesto inherit from each otherwithout having a Will. Thedeath of a partner is likely tocause considerable hardshipand uncertainty. In addition, ifan unmarried couple havechildren they will need tomake a Will to protect theirinterests. This is becauseillegitimate children only havethe right to claim in theirmother’s estate, but not theirfather’s unless he madeprovision for them in his Will. However there is a possibility
Will or not to Will?Law firm to conduct FREE wills/probate advice clinicfor Parishioners at Communicare on 1st DecemberAdvocate Zoe Blomfield, partner of Viberts Jersey Lawyers
that illegitimate children maybe able to claim against theirfathers’ estate, on the basisthat the law of successionrelating to illegitimatechildren may not becompatible with the HumanRights (Jersey) Law 2000.Until this is settled, or the newlaw is enacted, it would bepreferable to make a Will.
In order to avoid an intestacyin Jersey it is necessary tomake two Wills, one dealingwith immovable property andone dealing with movableproperty. A Will of Jerseyimmovable property dealswith land and everything builton it, leases for over 9 years, flying freehold property andthe benefit of certainmortgages. A Will of movableproperty deals with all otherassets such as jewellery, furniture, bank accounts, shares (including those thatrelate to share transferproperties) and investments.
At the moment, there areforced heirship rules whichapply to movable propertywhere there is a Will. Thesurviving spouse and issuecan claim against an estate ifthey have not been given theirlegitim or ‘one-third share’(where there is spouse andissue) or their ‘two-thirdsshare’ (where there is eitherspouse or issue). Theremaining third is freelydisposable by will. You mayleave your immovableproperty to whomsoever youwish, but in the case of yourspouse, they may be entitledto a life interest over all or
some of your immovableproperty.
New legislation is however onthe way which, if adopted, willabolish the fixed shares andwill substitute for them theability of dependents of thedeceased to claim thatprovision should be made forthem by order of the RoyalCourt if the provision in theWill is not adequate.
Furthermore, the proposednew law will, if brought intoforce, abolish the presentdistinction between the rightsof legitimate and illegitimatechildren in successionmatters.
As it is essential that Wills arein correct form and properlywitnessed (in order to bevalid), you should consult alawyer to advise on and toprepare your Wills. There areno pre-printed Will formssuitable for use in Jersey.
Parishioners are invited todiscuss their Wills or personalaffairs at an openWill/Probate Clinic atCommunicare, St. Brelade onTuesday 1st Decemberbetween 6.00 pm. and 8.00pm.
On this occasion Parishionersmay seek general advice orgive us instructions to draftWills or to deal with anypersonal affairs. Should youlike to attend, you may pre-book for an allocated time. Ifyou would like to do so pleasecontact Mrs Cathy Clipp on632205.

La Moye WI was formed in
February 1953 and is now the
only WI meeting in St Brelade.
It is part of the National
Federation of Women’s
Institutes (NFWI), and also
the Jersey Island Federation of
Women’s Institutes (JIFWI).
We are a friendly group of
around 40 members with ages
ranging from mid 30’s to early
80’s (not that age is relevant
in this day and age). Meetings
are held at 7.30 pm. on the
first Friday of the month at
Communicare, Don Farm, St
Brelade.
The main part of the evening
is a talk or demonstration
(sometimes with ‘hands on’
experience) preceded by
some brief discussion of WI

visits, trips, walks and other
activities for our members.
During the past months our
speakers’ subjects have
ranged from the Ecce Homo
Trust through to personal
development. On one evening
we arranged a walking
scavenger hunt through the

August, went on a ‘Sunday

We have a regular group
meeting every Saturday
morning to walk at various
locations in the Island, a
group of ‘litter ladies’ who,
each month, clear a section of
the Railway Walk and for
those less-energetic members
there is a monthly book group
and, best of all, a dining group
which visits a different
hostelry each month to
sample their wares. Our
meeting in December is ‘A Bit

Harbour movementsImprovements please St. Aubin’s Boat Owners Associationby Jan ChapmanAs the 2009 boating seasoncame to an end, the St Aubin’sBoat Owners had a generalmeeting and get-together atthe Royal Channel IslandsYacht Club, St. Aubin in earlyNovember.
The Association memberswere entertained with aninteresting talk, illustratedwith many photos of NickPoole’s Jaunt2Gib, a smallsailing boat, which hecompleted during the summerto raise money and awarenessof the charity Challenge4Ben.
The Association memberswere also given a round-up ofall the efforts which have been
made by the Boat Owners inassocation with the HarboursDepartment during 2009.
First of all the harbour wasgiven a thorough clean up andthree security cameras wereinstalled. New signage was putup, several abandoned tenderswere removed and two olddinghy racks moved.
Parking on the South Quay isnow for boat owners only, andlocal boat owners can book thedrying pad and blocks freeover an extended neap tideperiod.
The meeting heard that nextseason the harbour is to be
dredged and new riser chains
installed on each mooring.
There may also be some
moving around of boats to
create the most efficient lay-
out for the harbour and an
inventory of moorings has
already been undertaken.
It was also reported that a new
logo has been created for the
Association and polo shirts,
suitably incorporating the new
design, were now available.

Best Parish to live: official?by Mike JacksonWe are pleased to note thatSenator Alan Breckon has takenup residence in the Parishjoining Senator Sarah Fergusonas one of our two all-islandrepresentatives as parishioners.
Alan is now living at Le PetitMenage in St. Aubin and I'msure he will be a regularparticipant in Parish events. Asone of our longest servingpoliticians Alan is well placed to
represent Parishioners when
another voice is needed in the
States. Many will recall he
topped the poll in the 2008
Senatorial elections.
I have no doubt that his position
as Chairman of the Jersey
Consumer Council gave Alan
sufficient information to decide
in which Parish he should make
his home!
The winter has just aboutarrived. On Sunday, 1stNovember, I took a walk outalong the causeway to CorbiereLighthouse. The majesty of theweather with gray cloudsscudding across the sky, squalls blowing through, wasgood enough to blow cobwebsaway.
Reflecting back on the yearthat is 2009, I began to thinkabout all the work that went onduring the year. As a StatesMember, St. Brelade Deputy,Assistant Minister of Housing, and sitting on various panelsand committees, it has beenvery busy on all fronts and a lothas been achieved.
However, having considered allmy areas of work, I have to saythat the achievement that gaveme the greatest amount ofsatisfaction in 2009 wasteaching my grandson to cyclehis bike. As a Christmaspresent in 2008, I bought Jacka second-hand bike in excellentcondition for £30 on Cafe Cyril, the States intranet site.
I started to teach him in
February in a lane on LaCommune De la Moye. Thebike did not have stabilisers. Ilooped one of my own beltsaround his shoulders andsupported him until he got thefeel of the thing. After aboutfive lessons, I ‘unlooped’ himand he took off. Despite a fewbloody knees, some grazedknuckles and quite a fewbruises, he now looks forwardto his bike ride at the week-ends and has cycled to theAirport, and to town. Not badfor a four year old!
So, over the Christmas, get onyour walking shoes, woolly hatand warm jacket and take awalk along the Railway Walkout to Corbiere and remindyourself just how lucky we areto live in St. Brelade.
If you see a small lad with aSpiderman hat belting alongthe Railway Walk, ringing hisbell, my best advice is to standwell aside.

As the time approaches for usto return to Jersey for a while Ihave just begun to realise whyit is that my wife, Jenny, and Ireally feel at home in ‘our’ newvillage in the Val de la Thouetin Deux Sevres. We came downthis time in late August to findthat there had been virtuallyno rain since our last visit andthat almost everything Jennyhad planted had died. Therewas still the ‘lawn’ to cutalthough nothing but weedswas showing any sign of everhaving ever contained anychlorophyll!
After a week or two I left Jennyin the house whilst I went up toAirvault where I was booked into go on a course. Rather thandrive back and forth each day Istayed in our caravan and fromtime to time Jenny came up fora night or two. Each eveningwhen she was in the house wespoke on the phone. On onesuch night I called her and shetold me that she had received a‘delegation’ from two of ourneighbours who had noticedthat my car had not beenaround for a couple of weeks.Monique and Chantelle werevery sympathetic: Now that
Jenny had been deserted shewas not to hesitate to call uponthem for anything she neededor, perhaps, Monsieur Jackie(Monique’s husband and oneof the Conseilliers of theCommune, the equivalent ofone of our Procuerers) couldassist. In any case they felt thatthey should arrange for one ofthe nuns to pay her a pastoralvisit! Jenny struggled toexplain that, in fact, there wasno problem and eventuallymanaged to convince themthat she had chosen to be onher own whilst I was away asshe had things that she neededto do about the house. Notleast to cope with an invasionby a large family of mice which,in our absence, had greatlyenjoyed her dried goods store.
It was a demonstration of thetrue meaning of a caring parishcommunity.
Incidentally, I was away on acourse learning to fly a‘paramoteur’ (poweredparaglider). This was a sportof which none of the dear goodladies had any comprehensionwhatsoever! I am delighted toconfirm however, that it is onlythe mice who had left home.
An air of concern!

The pupils, and staff of Les Quennevais School have hada busy 2009, and it would appear that there will be no letup with a wide range of activities and events planned forChristmas and into the New Year
This autumn, for being allowed the pleasure of going toschool out of uniform on several occasions, students ofLes Quennevais School were able to raise almost £1,600for Jersey Hospice and a non-uniform day in aid of BBCChildren in Need has raised another substantial sum.
With Christmas just a few weeks away, the LesQuennevais School Home and School Association’sChristmas Fayre will be on Wednesday 2nd Decemberbetween 6pm and 9pm. The school will again be buzzingwith throngs of folk buying Christmas gifts, cards andwrappings, homemade cakes and more, includingenjoying games of luck and skill for prizes. Throughoutthe evening the school orchestra and steel band will beplaying - an unmissable treat to enjoy! The adjoininglibrary will also be open and friendly librarians will bedemonstrating Christmas crafts for children. All profitsraised will go to the Home and School Association’s fundwhich benefits the students in so many ways.
Two years ago Les Quennevais School’s production ofThe Little Shop of Horrors wowed audiences at the JerseyArts Centre. The next whole school production will beBugsy Malone, a musical comedy set in the American1920’s era of Prohibition when all the gangsters and their‘Molls’ were kids. With a cast of over 100 students, it’ssure to be a very memorable production. Performancesare scheduled for 9th, 10th, 11th February 2010.

The top photograph of Rue deCroquet, St. Aubin, was foundamongst the possessions ofthe estate of a localphotographer.

Manyimages of local interest wereuncovered and over the nextfew months the family, whowish not to be identified, maybe able to show a few morethat feature St. Brelade.
Apart from the costumedresidents and horse and carts
the road is immediatelyrecognisable - and almostunchanged. The photographwas taken from outside ‘LesBurins’ one of the oldesthouses on Rue du Croquet.
One noticebale differencehowever, is the loss of the bay-window to the property, possibly a shop, on the right ofthe picture.

CHRISTMAS TIME
In the morning at the break of dawn,
Baby Jesus has been born,
Sitting round the Christmas tree,
Lying in presents and smiling with glee,
The evergreen trees are frosted and white,
Lights in the sky are pretty and bright,
Families enjoy their Christmas dinner,
But Christmas cake is always the winner.

Riding on a donkey
Inns are all full, what shall we do?

Crossing pointFollowing the St Aubin Forumof January 2008, a group wasset up, under thechairmanship of ChristopherDavey, to look at differentelements of trafficmanagement through St.Aubin’s village and to workfor improvements inpedestrian safety includingthe provision of a crossing.
In March 2009, a petition ofover 500 signatures calling fortwo crossings was raised byThe St Aubin Residents’Association and presented toConnetable Mike Jackson.
After consultation with theengineers of Transport andTechnical Services, a decisionwas made during the summerto create a crossing from thecorner of Checkers to theNatWest Bank, with a widecentral refuge, flanked by twoplanted areas.
Work got underway in lateOctober and took about fourweeks to complete.
One St. Aubin residentdescribed the scheme as: “Amarvellous Christmaspresent”.
Connetable Mike Jackson toldLa Baguette: ‘Funding hascome from States approvedTTS initiatives for minorcommunity safety pedestrian/traffic improvements. St.Aubin has become a lot busierin recent years and I wastherefore happy to supportthe residents and theImprovement Group in theirwish and secure the necessaryfunding for this project. Apartfrom the safety aspect, thescheme has also added afurther opportunity tobrighten up St. Aubin withsome additional planting. Agood result all round”

Dear La Baguette: I contacted
you and the letter appeared in

asking for volunteers to join
an adopt a lane group in St

Congratulations to Rachel
Bishop, the only person to
reply to my plea. It is
disappointing but I intend to
continue my efforts to
produce a group of property
owners willing to keep an eye
on the state of their
surrounding roads and lanes
and pick up the non bio
degradable litter if necessary.
The road sweepers who
sweep the roads at different
intervals, right now with the

enormous amount to clear.
The crux of the matter is to try
to alter the general
population’s attitude to litter
dropping. I believe that on the
main roads the car owners are
the culprits especially on the
main road from La Haule to
the Savings Bank.
Does anyone have any ideas to
help change this attitude and
persuade willing folk to keep
our parish litter free

Electricity in the homenowadays is taken for grantedand with anything familiar weoften stop taking notice of it andin this case often forget just howpotentially deadly it can be!
With the Christmas Seasonadvancing, here are someimportant tips that can help youand your family enjoy thefestivities and most importantlyremain safe to see in the NewYear!
Over the past few years therehas been a growing tendency touse electrical Christmasdecorations inside and outsidethe house, with traditionalpaper chains hung alongsidelights and other electricallyilluminated and motoriseddecorations, such as wavingSanta’s. These electrical itemsare as equally dangerous as anyother piece of electricalequipment! In the excitement ofChristmas it is easy to forgetthat electricity can bedangerous.
Christmas items have all theusual potential electricalhazards, for example, faultyequipment or wiring, incorrectly fitted plugs andfuses, extension cables (possiblydaisy-chained) and trailingcables. Such faults can easilylead to blackouts, tripping andfalling, electrocution and fires!
If you are using electricaldecorations, take a few simpleprecautions, to ensure you havea winter wonderland.
• Make sure your decoration hasa CE mark (Kite mark) forelectrical safety.
• Make sure that the plug andthe socket in which it will beplaced is not cracked.
• Make sure that any extensionlead is not a tripping hazard.
• Make sure you are notoverloading an electrical pointwhich could lead to a fire!
• Don’t change Christmas lightswhen they are plugged in!
• Preferably use decorationswhich have a safety transformer.
• Make sure you know what youare doing when changing a fuse.
• Never use any electricalequipment or switches with wethands.
• Keep decorations out of reachof small children and pets.
• Make sure that you switch offand unplug all decorationswhen you go to bed or leave thehouse.
Whether it’s Christmas or anyother time, take care and treatelectricity and appliances withrespect. Take wise precautionsto ensure your Christmas is nota dangerous or ruined one. Callan electrician if you would likeany advice on your electricalwiring or your installations, orwould like your outdoordecorations checked, installedand taken down safely.
Wishing you a Happy and SafeChristmas and New Year!

Dear Editor: I am pleased andproud to announce that themonies raised for charities inReg’s Garden during 2009 forOpen Gardens and TheatreGarden events has so fartotalled approximately£16,000
In addition to that, over£6,000.00 has been taken by‘voluntary donations’ in thegarden collecting can, and toadd to that, The Jersey AnimalShelter’s collecting boxproduced £400. Overall some£22,500 this year in total hasbeen raised against £6,000last year.
In 2010 I will be supportingthe Red Cross Appeal Fund byhaving their charity box ondisplay.
I suppose that I would havemade over 5,000 cuppas thisyear, against 3,500 last yearand on a normal dry day, wewould have had 70 to 80visitors in the garden. Localsmaking up half the number.
Since July 2008 the VisitorsBook has had 1,300 newentries added.
In early 2008 I emailed 140Jersey charities and hadresponse from twelve of them.Only three took me up on myoffer of using the garden and
theatre for their fund raising.
Things have changed, this
year we have had interest
from fifteen of them and
twelve have used the garden,
‘What’s On’, Jersey’s tourist
publication describes Reg’s
Garden as:
“A lovely place to sit and pass
away a few hours in a relaxing
area of one and a half acres of
landscaped gardens with a
large hundred and eighty feet
long Koi pond with waterfall,
fairy garden, bird aviary/
sanctuary and amphitheatre.”
Remember too, that entry to
the garden is FREE. A Happy
Christmas to you all.
