What is the New York State Smokers’ Quitline?

The New York State Smokers’ Quitline is a free and confidential program that provides evidence-based stop smoking services to New York State residents who want to stop smoking or using other forms of tobacco.

Quitline Overview• In operation since 2000

• Based at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, located in Buffalo

• Serviced more than 440,000 calls

At 3 months and 12 months:

• Voluntary follow-up telephone interviews

• Assessment of smokers who utilized Quitline services, their receipt of the services, use of stop smoking aids, and current stop smoking status

• Restricted to adults (18+ years), NYS residents, current smokers seeking services/quitting assistance for themselves, and verbally agreed to callback

Smokers who were sent NRT are asked a series of questions concerning their satisfaction with Quitline Services. This table summarizes results of the Service Satisfaction Questions as of February 28, 2006.

Satisfaction Follow-up Questions

• The 3-month survey began the week of March 28, 2005. As of February 28, 2006, 787 3-month follow-up surveys have been completed.

• The 3 month Quit Status survey consists of a rolling telephone survey with a sample of 8 smokers randomly pulled weekly who were uninsured or carried Medicaid insurance and 16 smokers randomly pulled who were insured smokers, for a total of 24 smokers pulled randomly each week from the Quitline database.

• Participants from the 3 month survey will be re-contacted 9 months later and will be asked to complete the 12-month Quit Status survey.

• 34.2% - All Clients • 18.7% - Clients who received counseling,

but did not get NRT• 37.1% - Non-Proactive Clients who got a

starter supply of NRT and one callback• 45.1% - Proactive Clients who received at

least 2 Completed Callbacks• 46.5% - Proactive Clients who were sent
