Operations on the Layouts of NCR Division 3
The NoWhere Line
working to be
NearSomeplace
The NoWhere Line is an HO scale switching layout located in a 13 x 17 foot basement room. The layout
is built around the walls with an upper-level branch line and walk-in access. The double- and single-
track main line serves a generic Midwest region. It runs from Loop on the West (think Chicago Loop) to
Tunnel on the East (think Appalachian Mountains). Because of pass-through and originating /
terminating traffic, the most intensive switching occurs at Bigburg, which is loosely patterned after and
highly compressed from the Wabash track arrangement in downtown Fort Wayne. Smallville is compact
and busy. The town of Branch hosts the passenger operations in the form of the Hungry Hobo tourist
dinner train and train ride (sometimes Climax steam).
The layout keeps 5 to 6 people busy for 3+ hours; operating sessions are held on the fourth Thursday of
the month. There is no formal dispatcher; a timetable and sequence checklists keep the trains in order.
Signals By Spreadsheet provides operational traffic control. For car forwarding, the railroad uses
1) car cards and waybills or 2) JMRI manifests and switchlists.
Welcome to this operations description of the NoWhere Line. For further information, check out the
layout website http://div3.ncr-nmra.org/layouts/nowhere-line

1 Track Plan
1.1 Schematic Diagram The schematic plan represents the physical arrangement of the layout in the room; it is not to scale. The
layout is Digitrax DCC, except for the Timesaver (see below).
Mainline freights depart eastward from the three staging tracks in Loop. A searchlight signal under
control of the Bigburg yardmaster allows trains into the Bigburg area. The signal bridge at CP Triple
(Control Point) directs returning westward trains into the Loop area.
Bigburg Yard has two Pickup / Setout tracks – one for each direction. The usual mode of operation is for
the Yardmaster to have the outgoing cars on the P/S tracks and the switching is performed by the train
crew. It is the Yardmaster’s choice to assist the train crew. Bigburg has industrial sidings on both sides
of the double-track main. To the left of Bigburg Yard is the vintage DC Timesaver switching district, with
industrial spurs, interchange tracks, and yard tracks. Bigburg generates local trains that service the
Branch line and the Interchange spur. The Bigburg area usually requires two operators.
Note: Observe the condition of the track fusee before entering or leaving the Timesaver area.
Midland is the end of the double-track main, with crossovers to allow different routes. Westward trains
approaching Bigburg request permission to enter the yard and obey the signals indicating the
Yardmaster’s choice. Eastward mainline trains generally depart Midland on the rear Track #2.
Continuing in the eastward direction, the Slope area has no flat sections on the mainline; this is a
complicating factor when switching the three industrial spurs in the area. The Reverse Track is actually
part of a return loop; it is the route of some trains. There is a signal at the tunnel entrance.
All entrances to the Tunnel area are signaled. Only one train at a time is allowed to operate in the area.
The Tunnel is the lowest level of the helix to the Branch line. The Summit turnout is the highest point on
the lower level and is the start of the Branch line. Eastward trains become westward in the Tunnel and
begin their return to Loop.
Smallville has one Pickup / Setout track and a Yardmaster is usually on duty. Because of the tracks in the
tunnel, only westward mainline trains are switched here. Smallville is responsible for switching the
industries in the Slope area.
Note: The numeral 1 on the left signal at the tunnel entrance indicates one locomotive OR one car can
fit beyond the visible switchpoints without fouling the mainline in the tunnel.
Branch is the Hungry Hobo Museum town and museum trains switch the local industries. Upper Branch
(UB) trains from Bigburg exchange cars on the one yard track. Other trains use Branch as a direction-
changing point. Excursion passenger service originates and terminates in Branch.
Note: The main and runaround tracks must be kept clear to allow many trains to operate in Branch.
1.2 The Track Plan Unfolded This representation shows the double- and single-track nature of the layout. Main line freights run out
and back from the staging yard at Loop, crossing over at Midland to suit the track arrangement at
Smallville. Bigburg handles the traffic to and from Branch; Smallville runs its turns to the Slope area; the
Branch tourist operations cover all parts of the layout; the Upper Industrial job works the Branch
industries. Bench and track work is complete; scenery is a work in progress.

2 Job Descriptions
2.1 Traffic Manager – Loop
Welcome to Loop Staging The responsibility of the Traffic Manager is to direct and monitor the flow of freight traffic on the
railroad. Depending on the interests of management and the crew for each session, the NoWhere Line
uses:
1. Car cards and waybills OR
2. JMRI manifests and switchlists.
When JMRI is used, the computer generates the traffic flow, as represented by the manifests. The
Traffic Manager interacts with the computer to indicate when trains have terminated and new trains can
be generated. During a few sessions, this interaction has caused delays in the overall operations
because a significant train had not yet terminated and the computer needed to know what cars were to
be available for assignment to the next trains. The NoWhere Line does not have large yards where cars
can be held in reserve for future moves. The JMRI system is characterized by its paperwork – train
manifests and yard switchlists.
With lessons learned from JMRI experience, the car card / waybill system is intended to support
continuous freight and train movement. The Traffic Manager serves as the single agent for dynamic
replacement of waybills during the session, based on the traffic flow and the skills / interests of the
crew. When a train arrives in Loop staging, the Traffic Manager can assign new waybills and the train
can be available for reuse during the session. The Traffic Manager can also replace waybills at certain
key industries that are serviced by multiple trains. The car card / waybill system is characterized by the
movement of the paperwork with the cars; car movement is decided by the crew. JMRI experience is
captured in the Clearance Forms describing train routing, length restrictions, and other details.
2.2 Yard crew – Bigburg
Welcome to Bigburg Yard The Bigburg area is the major traffic center of the NoWhere Line. Almost every train has a presence at
Bigburg. The job of the Bigburg crew is to keep the traffic flowing efficiently and hopefully on schedule.
Two operators are needed at Bigburg – the Yardmaster and a local crew. These two work closely to:
1) handle the East and West Pickup / Setout tracks; 2) originate and terminate turns to other areas of
the railroad; 3) exchange cars between Bigburg Yard and the Timesaver yard track; 4) service the
Timesaver industries; and 5) service the Bigburg industries during the specified times.
The East and West Pickup / Setout (P/S) tracks are designed to hold blocks of cars for and from the
mainline freights (FEW). The Bigburg crew should spot the pickups before the scheduled arrival of each
train and then go about their local work. The mainline crews are responsible for performing the switch
moves and then moving on to clear the yard. The Bigburg crew then retrieves the setouts. If necessary,
the Bigburg crew can interact with the mainline crew, but this can cascade into subsequent delays for
Bigburg. The phrase “Plan Ahead” definitely applies here.
All traffic is routed around Loop staging in the counter-clockwise direction. The green LED on the Loop
toggle switch panel indicates when the main route is aligned. The normal toggle position is down. Most
of the large toggles have a Center-Off position to remove power from the switch machines. The small
This file is: Operations-NoWhere.docx; last updated: January 25, 2017 5
toggles disconnect track power. Red LEDs at each staging track indicate the blocked route. The signal
bridge at CP Triple indicates the overall routing and occupation in Loop. The Bigburg team should assist
each train crew to ensure the train entering Loop is aligned correctly.
Under control of the Bigburg Yardmaster, the Bigburg signal panel controls traffic coming into Bigburg
Yard from the three inbound tracks. Heading East from Loop, there is a single searchlight signal
protecting Main #1; pressing the 1East button clears this signal. Westbound traffic on Main #2 is
controlled by the approach-lighted signal located to the right of Topps Box Annex; pressing the 2West
button clears it. Turns coming back to Bigburg Yard can be brought in westbound on Main #1; pressing
the 1West button clears the signal near the pedestrian bridge at Midland. Note this signal has two
heads – upper for the straight route and lower for the diverging route. Pressing the Reset button drops
all signals to their restrictive aspects.
The Yardmaster has two main lines with three crossovers for use in routing traffic through Bigburg and
Midland. Mainline freights normally leave Midland on Main #2 in both directions. Keep this in mind
when considering how to accomplish concurrent switching moves.
The two locomotives assigned to Bigburg Yard are controlled by the power pack on the sliding shelf. A
switch locomotive and wired throttle are assigned to Timesaver.
Enjoy the switching…
2.3 Yard crew – Smallville
Welcome to Smallville Yard Smallville Yard is the gateway to the industries in the Slope Area. It is named Slope because there is no
level trackage on the main and passing tracks. My apologies for the difficulties of this “historic” area, i.e.
not the best construction techniques back then. Uncoupling magnets are indicated by white marker
posts. Use of a step stool, a long reach, and a “hill brake” are permitted; PLEASE be careful of snagging
anything with your sleeve. It is permitted to make separate pickup and setout runs if you wish.
However, there usually is empty flat space on the Whyte’s Mountain siding.
All industry switching is accomplished by trains leaving westbound and turning right through Wye. The
caboose is needed for the return push to Smallville. (You just need that switching challenge, don’t you?)
It is strongly advised to keep the Wye turnout thrown and the mainline red signal lighted while you are
working in Slope. Be prepared to hide in the passing track at Slope if a first-class train is due. (Someday
the detection system might be extended into Slope.)
Back in Smallville Yard, Track #1 (nearest the front) is the main line and is not in yard limits. Track #2 is
the Pickup / Setout / Passing track and is within the yard. Switch machines are controlled by the
Smallville panel to the left. Normal routing is accomplished with all toggles down. The far-right yard
switch is located under the bridge; its routing is indicated by the dwarf signals. Please note the
permissive number plate on the signal to the left of the yard switch – The numeral 1 means that one
rolling unit (locomotive or car) can be placed beyond the turnout points without fouling the main. You
will find that small space useful for runaround moves with the yard locomotive. Anything more in there
will foul the mainline and will probably derail on the hidden Track #1 switch.
This file is: Operations-NoWhere.docx; last updated: January 25, 2017 6
If you need access to mainline Track #1 inside the tunnel, use the Tunnel control panel. Please check the
nearby traffic situation (or Dispatcher / Traffic Manager) before entering Track #1; the Tunnel signals
will reflect your actions.
The Interchange track is located within the helix and is accessible from Track #1 and the Tunnel control
panel. It is strongly advised to use the delayed uncoupling technique to shove the cars into that siding.
Keep the caboose next to the locomotive. Use the peephole and helix lighting to shove the cars beyond
the yellow clearance marker. Keep Track #2 clear while performing this move on Track #1.
Smallville requires one yardmaster to keep it tidy. Depending on traffic, the yardmaster may perform
the switching duties at Slope and Interchange. If not, train crews can be called.
And… The Hungry Hobo Smallville (HHS) excursion train might show up. Around its scheduled time,
keep a route from Wye to Tunnel open for it.
Smallville may be small but it can be a challenge. Meets with three train have happened here.
2.4 Train crew
Welcome to NoWhere Line trains The railroad runs on a 1:1 clock. Editorial comment: It is management’s opinion that a “fast” clock is not really compatible with intensive switching operations. The wall clock in the layout room is railroad time. For each session, time usually starts at 0:00. East is to the right when facing the railroad. In double track locations, track 1 is always near the front.
The NoWhere Line has an employee timetable, which is available for your use. However, the time
information has been captured in the train sequence checklists and the pertinent train operation
information has been included in the Clearance Form for each train. The train crew must carry the
appropriate Clearance Form while running a train.
Notes on Clearance Forms: (A sample is at end of this document)
1. The top line indicates the operational class of the train. First-class trains have superiority over all
other trains. Fourth-class trains are restricted to yard limits only.
When meeting another train, the train of the higher class has priority.
2. The scheduled departure time is indicated on the top line of the Clearance Form.
3. Train symbol, train name, origination, and destination are indicated on the Clearance Form.
4. Correct blocking of the cars in the train is very important for some trains. Check the notes.
5. Please read the notes on the form to be aware of special circumstances for the train.
6. Please read and understand the routing of the train. If necessary, study the route before operating
the train. Some trains are subject to Blue Flag hours at certain industries.
7. Be aware of the maximum train length limit at each departure point. Trains longer than the limits
will not fit into upcoming blocks and might foul other traffic. The numbers in brackets indicate the
number of 40-foot or 50-foot cars permitted in the train.
Train length is the responsibility of the train crew.
8. After spotting a car at its final destination, place the car card and waybill in the industry pocket with
the blank side showing. The Traffic Manager may pick up the waybill for reuse.
All operating trackside signals indicate track routing; some indicate train occupation.
Red = Stop; Yellow = Proceed with caution expecting to Stop; Green = Proceed with caution.

3 Switching Yards
3.1 Bigburg Yard The traffic in and through Bigburg is best handled by a two-person crew.
3.2 Timesaver Yard The Timesaver area is
part of Bigburg.
This file is: Operations-NoWhere.docx; last updated: January 25, 2017 8
3.3 Smallville Yard Smallville is usually the domain of a single busy person.
3.4 Branch Yard Branch is a unique place. It is a museum town and all local switching is handled by museum crews
running the Upper Industrial (UI) trains. The NoWhere Line arrives in town, works the yard, and then
leaves. There is no yardmaster here; the local crew working the yard is in charge.
However, all excursion train (passenger) service originates and terminates here. It can easily become a
very busy place. Excursion trains should be prepared well before their departure times.
Note: The main and runaround tracks must be kept clear to handle all the traffic.
Request this place if you want to have your own section of the railroad – but be prepared for many
interruptions and visiting trains.

8 Traffic Manager Actions and Times The Traffic Manager ensures trains have crews and depart on time. The TM has authority to resolve
routing and meet issues; i.e. helping to keep the railroad flowing and busy.
When using car cards and waybills, the Traffic Manager may collect the waybills of cars that have been
delivered to their final destinations and may reuse those waybills during the session. Only certain key
locations are serviced multiple times during a session (Timesaver and Branch). Collection may be done
whenever waybills are needed for reuse.
