The Muscular System

Susan Levin 2011

What muscles are you using right now?

DO NOW:

Make a list of the muscles you are

using right now

Science Words to know

• Muscle

• Voluntary muscle

• Involuntary muscle

• Skeletal muscle

• Smooth muscle

• Cardiac muscle

• Tendon

What do muscles do?

• Hold my organs in place

• Hold my bones together so

that I can move

• Help me digest my food

• Help me breathe

• Open and close my eyelids

• Pump my blood

• Allow me to run and play

• Help me to smile

Functions of the muscular system

• Produce movement

• Maintain Posture

• Stabilize joints

• Generate heat

Moving the human body

• Muscle - an organ that contracts

and gets shorter- this provides

the force to move your body

parts.

• Muscles and bones work

together, coordinated by the

nervous system

Muscles of the

body

Parts of the muscular system

• Muscles – over 600

• Tendons

Tendons attach muscles to bone

helping your body move.

Feel your tendon right above your

heel in the back of your leg. This

is the thickest tendon in your body

– Achilles tendon.

What are muscles made of?

• Stretchy, elastic muscle cells

• Made of proteins

What else is stretchy like a muscle?

Muscle Control

• Voluntary muscles - muscles that you

are able to control

Can you think of examples?

• Involuntary Muscles - you can not

move them consciously. They just

keep working

Can you think of examples?

What muscles are both voluntary and

involuntary? (I can think of 2)

Where to find information

• Use textbook pg 51-53

Striated means striped.

Notes:

• Appearance, voluntary/involuntary, where found, when it tires,

etc

Compare and Contrast

• Use textbook page 51-53

• Use a WHOLE PAGE

to make a Venn Diagram

Skeletal

Smooth Cardiac

Types of Muscles - Skeletal

• Skeletal Muscles-muscles that

move bones

• Attached to bones by tendons

• Most numerous in the body

• Look striped or striated

• Voluntary muscles

• Tire easily

• Quick to react

Types of Muscles - Smooth Muscles

• Smooth muscles - non-striated

• Involuntary

• Move the internal organs

• Contract and relax slowly

• Example- small intestine,

stomach, digestive system,

bladder

Types of Muscles - Cardiac Muscle

• Cardiac muscle - found only in

the heart

• Involuntary

• Striations (stripes)

• Contracts about 70 times a

minute every day of your life.

• Does not tire

• Slow to react

• Medmovie : heart anatomy …

then anterior heartbeat

How Muscles Work

• Skeletal muscles – work in pairs

- when one muscle contracts-

another muscle relaxes

muscles work in pairs - bbc

• Muscles always PULL - never

push

• Muscles use glucose and

oxygen to make energy

• Produce heat when they

contract

• Muscles that are not exercised

What are the functions of the muscular system?

Why do muscles work in pairs?

One way to keep muscles strong…

• Eat foods from the

protein group every day.

They are high in protein

which helps to build

strong muscles.

• What kinds of foods are high

in protein?

• Exercise every day.

What are some things you

can do every day to help

keep your muscular

system healthy?

Learning “Write”:

• If smooth muscles had to be consciously

controlled what problems do you predict in

day-to-day living? Write a story.

• Write an article for the Courier about

preventing skeletal and muscular injuries.

Focus on ways the athletes can reduce the

risk of injuries. Use textbook p. 46 - 49
