Inthislecture,Iwillrevisittherootsandmotivationsbehindtheuseofmathematicalmodelsinthestudyofepidemics.Iwillillustratehowresearchdrivenbythedesireofsomeindividualstoscaleupwhattheyknowaboutdiseasetransmissionattheindividuallevelcouldbemodifiedtoaccountfortheimpactofdiseasedynamicsathigherlevelsoforganization.

Iwillillustratesomeapproachesviatheirapplicationstothestudyofdiseasessuchastuberculosis,Ebola,orinfluenza.Modelingconnectionsbetweenthestudyofvectorborneandsexuallytransmitteddiseaseswillalsobenoted. A surprisingresultinvotingtheoryisthatanelectionoutcomemaydependonhowvotesaretalliedaftertheballotsarecast.ThiselectionscenarioisrelevanttotheoutcomeofgolftournamentsbecausetheProfessionalGolfer'sAssociation(PGA)istheonlyprofessionalsportsleagueintheU.S.thatchangesthemethodofscoringdependingontheevent.ThePGA’sstrokeplayandmodifiedStablefordscoringsystemareequivalenttousingdifferentvotingvectorstotallyanelection.ThisequivalenceisdiscussedanddatafromtheMastersandInternationalTournamentsareusedtoexaminetheeffectofchangingthescoringmethodontheresultsofthetournament.

Byfocusingon3-candidateelections,Iwillshowhowelementarylinearalgebraandconvexitycanbeusedtoexplaintheeffectofchangingthevotingvector.Sometimes,regardlessofthevotingvectorused,thesameoutcomewouldhaveoccurred,asinthe1992USPresidentialelection.Canthishappeningolf?Ianswerthisquestionanddeterminewhetherthereexistsagolf-scoringmethodinwhichTigerWoodswouldnothavewonthe1997Masters,ashisperformanceisconsideredoneofthebestever.

Dr.MichaelJones isanAssociateEditoratMathematicalReviewsandeditorofMathematicsMagazine.HeearnedhisPhDingametheoryfromNorthwesternUniversityunderthedirectionofDonaldSaari.MikewasborninCamden,NJandwasafacultymemberatMontclairStateUniversityfrom1998-2008.HehasalsoheldfacultypositionsattheUSMilitaryAcademyandLoyolaUniversityChicago.Mathematically,heisinterestedintheapplicationofmathematicstothesocialsciences.

LieutenantColonelJonathanW.Roginski(Jon)istheDirectoroftheWestPointNetworkScienceCenter,aresearchorganizationthatannuallymanagesapproximately$1MofreimbursableresearchsupportingadiverseportfolioofUnitedStatesDepartmentofDefensedecisionmakers.HeisalsoanAssistantProfessorofMathematicalSciencesattheUnitedStatesMilitaryAcademyatWestPoint,CourseDirectorfortheAcademy’sFundamentalsofNetworkSciencecourse,andtheprogrammanagerfortheAcademy’sNetworkScienceminor.Hisresearchinterestsbuildfromtheexperienceofusingquantitativeandqualitativedatasciencemethodstoassesstheoperationalprogressofmilitaryunitsagainsttheirgoalsincombatandhomestation,supportingthe10thMountainDivision(LightInfantry).Thisservicehighlightedthequalityofirreducibilityinmilitaryproblemsolvingandthenecessityofmethodsthat“embracedthecomplexity”ofthemodernworld,ratherthanassumingitaway.Jon’spersonalresearchleveragestheimplicationsofgraphcomparisontechniquestowardDepartmentofDefensedecisionmakinginattack,defense,andstabilityscenariosbyaccountingforoperationalcomplexitythroughnetworkmodeling.
