S pecializing in locks and furnishingcomponents for caravans and cam-pers, FAP has been producing plastic

parts for fully 45 years and is now Europe’sleading supplier of locks for living-compar-tment and hatchback doors, boastingaround 80% market share. With a product range encompassing aera-tors, plumbing components, lights, ceilinglamps, furniture accessories, bathroom-doorlocks, barrels and keys, the Florence-basedfirm works with the leading Italian and inter-national constructors. In 2011, it launchedthe innovative Ghost range of locks that canbe set up with one or two locking points,featuring an opening/closure system with avery similar sound and feel to car locks. Theeasy-to-install mechanism concealed withinthe door is based on a patented system ofplastic-coated levers. These solid, reliablemodels have been lab-tested over 12,000opening/closing cycles, equivalent to 5 yearsof working life, without any observable alte-ration. “Ghost is our flagship range, which hasalready spawned two attempted imitations”,says Lapo Ermini, Managing Director of FAPSrl, “but it is not the only product that we arevery proud of. For high-end vehicles, wehave developed the Magic line, offering anespecially elegant and ergonomic handledesign with a rounded shape and an attrac-tive, tactile surface made of aluminum alloy.The locks are a very important part of arecreational vehicle: they are the first thingyou touch when you come aboard. That’swhy we have invested heavily in developingproducts that combine quality and reliabilitywith high esthetic appeal inspired by classicItalian design at its best”. The Magic lockshave been developed with a dual lockingmechanism for recreational-vehicle doors.When the door closes, the first stage kicks in,holding the door shut. The door is now loc-ked, but it can be made doubly secure.When the handle is lowered, a barrel withrotating components clicks into place,pushing the door even tighter against theinternal frame for a truly firm closure. TheFAP factory spans an area of 4,000 sq m.The company employs 15 people across itsproduction departments, computerizedwarehouse, technical office with advanceddesign systems, and quality-control depar-tment. “My grandfather started the businessin 1968, prompted by two Italian entrepre-neurs whom he met on a campsite: Luano

Niccolai, owner of Rimor, andGiovambattista Moscardini, founder of Laika.The freshly established FAP began to makeaerators for these two celebrated Italiancaravan manufacturers”, recounts LapoErmini. “In 1977, my father took over thereins, transforming the company from asmall workshop into a major European pla-yer; in 2002, I joined the managementmyself. I am striving to follow in my prede-cessors’ footsteps, steering the firm towardsuccess despite the depression afflicting theItalian market. Fortunately, the sector hasseen the value of our offering and, thus far,has always rewarded us”. FAP obtained UNIEN ISO 9001:2008 certification in 2003. Thecompany has been active not only in thecaravanning industry but also, since 1982, inthe railway sector, making furnishing compo-nents for the main European manufacturers.

Orus Line

O ne of FAP’smost intere-sting pro-

duct ranges isOrus Line, a col-lection ofm o d e r n ,a t t r a c t i v e l ydesigned fillersand externalinlets for cam-pers and cara-vans. The com-mon family feelis created by thecap and frame,which are available invarious colors, inclu-ding a transparent plasticversion. The filler with auto-mobile-style friction cap is uniquein the industry. Ideal for both the drin-king-water tank and any additionalfuel tanks, it features a screw guide forthe friction cap, which takes effectwhen fully screwed in, and a system tomake the handle turn idly once locked.The friction sound indicates that thecap has been screwed in correctly,while the idle rotation protects thetank contents and the cap itself bydeterring thieves. The cap also has ananti-fall cord and a socket to hold it tothe flap during refilling. Another exclu-sive feature of Orus Line by FAP is thefiller with an adapter enabling the useof diesel tank caps, including a dedica-ted version for the original Fiat caps.This solution is particularly useful tomotorhome manufacturers, whosefuel-tank fillers must comply withvarious legal standards in case vehiclesoverturn. Orus Line overcomes the pro-blem by enabling the manufacturer’soriginal filler and cap to be used. OrusLine includes external sockets for con-necting the gas supply, a quick connec-tion for water with a pressure reducerand check valve, a 230-V / 16-A exter-nal electric socket, and a quick connec-tor for the external shower. The multi-purpose system includes a useful 220-V Shuko socket, sockets for digital ter-restrial TV and satellite dish, and a 12-V socket. All home comforts can beenjoyed under the veranda, too.Another interesting feature is theoption to buy the cover as an aftermar-ket part if it should break during aclumsy maneuver or when mishandled.
