Getting yourGarage in Gear
1. De-clutter &Group Like Items.
Label storage bins as “Donate”, “Trash” and “Keep”, and assign all items in your garage to these
3 categories. Go through the “Keep” items and group all
according to purpose.
2. Create Specific Areas.Use graph paper to sketch the
garage creating an area for each activity that occurs in the space. Take into account your actual
lifestyle - if shoes pile up by the door, create a space by the door for a shoe rack. Make sure the projects and items used most
often are in the most accessible locations.
3. Stash and Stow. Rolling carts or tables on casters (add them yourself!) are perfect for work stations that can easily
be “put away.” Shelving for baskets or bins, and wood or metal pegboard are terrific
storage solutions.
4. Doll It Up. Paint makes any room look
instantly better and have fun with the color in the space!
Don’t stop at the walls; paint the floor with proper concrete paint
or epoxy for a big impact.

Carpenter ants can cause costly damage to the wood in your home. Reduce your risk of attack by making your
property less attractive to these pests.• Store firewood away from the house; bring in only the wood you’ll use soon.
• Remove stumps and dead trees near the house.• Repair damaged trees.
• Replace water-damaged or decayed wood in and around your home. Use only treated wood where
the structure makes contact with the soil.• Trim tree and shrub branches so they
do not touch the house.- ATLANTIC INC. PEST MANAGEMENT

I love the quote inscribed above the front door of Fairlane Estate, the home of Henry Ford: “Chop your own wood and it will warm you twice.” I guess I love
it so much because I’ve pretty much had to do for myself whatever I wanted done—whether moving 1,400 miles to find work, putting myself through
college or starting my own business.- JENNIFER SHEPHERD, Interior Designer/Decorator,

Sustainable Landscaping
Key items to consider when creating a landscape that is good for you, your home
and the planet: - focus on people and
nature coexisting - reduce water, energy and
chemical usage in landscapes - use drought-tolerant plants
- aerate, compost and mulch to keep healthy soil and help soil
drain quickly while storing water - water more, less often to encourage roots to grow deeper; use soaker hoses
or drip irrigation- treat pests or insects only
when they appear - plant for energy efficiency by shading south and west walls
and exterior air conditioners, and directing breezes with shrubs
- use porous surfaces rather than concrete, to allow rain to filter
back into the aquifer

When leaving home for a vacation or work trip, don’t turn your AC unit off. Instead, set the temperature to 80 degrees. Not only will you
prevent mold from forming, you’ll also save energy; your unit has to work extra hard to bring the
temperature back to cool if you were to turn it off. - LAURA FOLKERTH, Student, College of Charleston; The Little Black Book Editorial Intern Summer 2009
Stop Your Dog Digging
If you have a dog that loves to dig holes and your yard looks like a
minefield, try these steps:
- Determine why she is digging. If she’s hot, provide more shade.
If she’s bored, provide more exercise. If she just likes to dig,
read on!
- Create a “digging space” for your dog that digs for fun or by
nature. Mask the space with shrubs or plants and encourage
her to dig there by burying treats and rewarding the behavior.
- Keep your dog away by sprinkling cayenne pepper
around the areas she digs, or fill “repeat holes” up most of the way, then mix in pinecones or
moth balls with the last bit of dirt to repel her without harm.

While you’re taking photographs of your family at the beach this summer, photograph some of the
little things that tell the story like flip flops at the edge of the water, sunglassses, children’s footprints in the sand, sunscreen propped in the sand, the bucket and shovel, etc. Having some wonderful feature shots like
these can really break up all the fun images of the family and add even more interest to your summer

betty buzz: CREDIt CARD smARts
What counts in a credit score? Your payment history, amounts owed, length of credit history, new credit and types of credit used are all considered when determining your credit score.
Use your credit wisely and practice healthy spending habits and credit card usage.
❑ Do not use your credit card as a substitute for cash by making everyday purchases.
❑ Pay off as much of your balance as you can each month to pay your debts off faster and cheaper.
❑ If you cannot afford it, do not use your credit card to buy it. Purchase items you need versus those you simply want.
❑ Consider how your credit will be impacted before closing out a card. Never close cards that still have a balance
or those that make up a significant amount of your credit history.
❑ If you cannot make your monthly payment on time, let your creditor know in advance.

When co-hosting an event, bring your food on your own dish or platter. While you may know that your pimento cheese and chicken salad finger sandwiches look best on an oval tray - your co-hostess does not.
Coordinate with her and ask if she is using silver trays, cut glass, crystal or something more casual, and bring your food on something that goes with the overall look.

If the Shoe Fits Your Body
• Small calves and ankles look better in delicate shoes with
pointy toes and a heel. Avoid chunky shoes.
• Thick calves and ankles look great with bold shoes with
round or square toes. Avoid ankle straps.
• Shoes with no back (mules, thongs) make legs look
longer. Look for a shoe with more height.

A Head’s Up on Hair
• Massaging your scalp as you shampoo stimulates oil glands and promotes
bounce and shine.
• Put the brush down when your hair is wet! Instead, use a wide
tooth comb after washing to prevent breakage.
• You are what you eat, and a healthy diet will make your hair look better, especially a diet with lots of fruits and veggies. Stay
away from processed foods, alcohol and cigarettes.

Quick Energy Fix
Ease fatigue with an easy yoga move. Lie on the floor with
your legs up against the wall. Take 10 slow, relaxed breaths.
Repeat several times to promote circulation, oxygenate the blood,
and revitalize within minutes.
WeLL Being
Body cleanzWe shower, brush our teeth and wash our hair on a
daily basis, but we tend to ignore cleansing our insides. Our colon, which functions as the “sewer system”
of our body, also requires regular cleaning. Colon Hydrotherapy, also know as a “colonic,” is an internal bath that helps cleanse the colon of poisons,
gas, toxins and accumulated fecal matter. At BodyCleanz, we focus on cleansing and purification
to help remove the accumulated internal damage of life in a stressful, toxic world.

We here at “The Little Black Book” are big fans of day hikes in the Lowcountry. Here are some of our favorites that are close to home and easy enough for the entire family to enjoy.
Dungannon Heritage Preserve (9.0 mile)Gently rolling, mostly easy-to-follow, foot-traffic only, out-and-back dirt trail through mixed forest and wetland areas.
The Palmetto Trail - Awendaw Passage (7.0 miles)easy walking/biking section of the Palmetto trail. Scenic overlook and boardwalk.
Francis Marion National Forest - I’on Swamp (2.0 miles)easy, two-mile loop trail along rice dikes that are a part of the remnants of the abandoned, Witheywood Plantation. Famous among birders for the variety of species that are seen here during spring and fall migration.
Francis Marion National Forest - Sewee Shell Mound (1.0 mile)easy loop featuring 2 Native American historical sites: the Sewee Shell Ring, a 4,000 year old trash pile of oyster rings and another mound of discarded clamshells on the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Composting 101
Composting Structures: The sides should be loose
enough to provide air movement and one side should open for
easy turning and removal. If you choose not to use a container,
cover with a layer of yard trimmings or soil to prevent
moisture loss.
Composting Materials: Most plant material including
fallen leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, flowers and
the remains of garden plants. Kitchen scraps, such as fruit and vegetable peels and trimmings, crushed eggshells, tea bags and
coffee grounds. Shredded, woody yard trimmings.
Avoid: Compost made from grass
clippings treated with herbicides and pesticides. Meat, bones and fatty foods (cheese, salad dressing and leftover cooking oil). Pet or human wastes. Weeds with large storage roots or seeds. Diseased
or insect-infested plants.
Using Compost: Mix compost with soil to enrich the flower and vegetable garden,
improve the soil around trees and shrubs, to top-dress lawns
or as a mulch. Add no more than 1/4 - 1/3 of compost by volume to potting mix for houseplants.
Soak compost in a burlap or cheesecloth sack steeped in
water to make compost “tea” for young plants.
