It was an important day in the animal kingdom.

All the animals had gathered at Pride Rock to catch the first glimpse of

the newborn prince Simba – the cub of King Mufasa

and Queen Sarabi.

The wise baboon, Rafiki stood on Pride Rock and held him

up for all to see.

Later, King Mufasa, confronted his brother Scar

for not attending the celebration. “ Oh, I feel

awful.” lied Scar.

“I was next in line for the throne till Simba was born,”

he mumbled bitterly.

“What am I going to do with him?” said Mufasa under his

breath.

One morning King Mufasa pointed the Pride Lands and said, look at the rays of the sun, Simba. Everything the

light touches is my Kingdom. One day it will be yours.”

But far to Simba’s left, the land was hazy and dark.

“What about that shadowy place?” he asked.

That’s beyond our borders. You must never go there, my

son,” replied Mufasa.

Simba tried not to be disappointed. “I thought a king could go anywhere he

wants,” he said.

Near pride Rock, he came across Scar. “Uncle Scar! Guess What?” he cried.

“I am going to be the King of Pride Rock. My dad showed

me the whole kingdom!”

“Oh? Did he show you what’s beyond the northern border?”

demanded Scar. “He said I can’t go there,” said Simba.

“of course. Only the bravest lions can go there,” said Scar. “I’m brave. Tell me what’s out

there,” pleaded Simba.

“An elephant graveyard,” said Scar, Scar grinned slyly as

Simba and his friend, Nala the lioness ran to the forbidden place with Zazu the hornbill.

They had walked a long way into a territory where there

were no trees.

Suddenly Simba saw an enormous elephant skull. He

was delighted.

“This is the elephant graveyard!” he cried. He was

about to climb inside when three hyenas jumped out of

the skull.

They were foul-smelling and filthy. They circled their victims slowly, ready to

attack.

Simba felt his heart beating wildly as he and Nala ran from

the hyenas.

Any minute now they would catch up with them! He took a deep breath and kept running,

when suddenly…

“ROAAARRRR!”

The hyenas spun around and looked into the furious eyes

of a huge lion.

“It’s King Musafa! Quick, let’s get out of here!” gasped one

of them.

Musafa roared again, and the hyenas fled howling into the

mist.

“I was just trying to be brave like you,” Simba tried to

explain. “I’m only brave when I have to be,”Mufasa said

gently.

Then he looked up the sky. He said, “The great kings of

the past look down on us from these stars.

They’ll always be there to guide you – and so will I.”

The next morning, Scar met Simba. “Wait here in the

gorge,” Scar said.

Then Scar started a stampede of wildebeests to get rid of

Simba.

But in his hurry to escape, Simba fell. Just then Mufasa grabbed his son in his mouth

and rushed him towards safety.

But a wildebeest knocked Mufasa from the ledge.

Injured, he managed to cling to a rock.

He looked up and saw Scar above him. Scar dug his claws into Mufasa’s front

legs.

Then, with a deadly push, he sent Mufasa down to his

death. Mufasa slid down and was still.

Simba ran down to his father and sobbing loudly, buried

his face in his father’s mane.

“Simba, what have you done?” demanded Scar.

“It was an accident,” wailed Simba, “He came to save me,”

Scar shook his head, “If it weren’t for you, the king

would be alive, Run away and don’t ever return here,” he

said.

With sadness in his heart, Simba ran down the length of

the gorge.

Meanwhile Scar readied himself to assume the title of

the king.

Simba ran till his legs couldn’t carry him anymore.

Exhausted he fainted.

Just then, a fat warthog Pumbaa and a skinny meerkat Timon saw Simba and helped

him.

Pumba asked Simba to stay with them for a while and he

willingly accepted.

Years passed, Simba now had a great mane around his head

and shoulders.

One day, Simba met a lioness who jumped on him just like

Nala used to.

She looked very familiar. “Nala?” he asked.

“Simba” Nala replied. Why did Scar tell us that you were

dead?”

Nala said that Scar was king and he let the hyenas do what

they wanted.

“Simba, with you alive, Scar has no right to the throne,”

said Nala.

But Simba refused. Nala looked away. She couldn’t believe Mufasa’s son would

turn back on the pride.

That night he met Rafiki the baboon. “Look up there,”

Rafiki murmered.

In the sky Simba could see a shadow of a lion with a mane.

“Dad?” asked Simba.

“You see, he is watching over you,” whispered Rafiki as he

disappeared into the dark night.

The next day, Simba returned to Pride Rock which had been

struck by draught.

He saw his mother, Queen Sarabi being ordered by Scar.

“Step down or fight, Scar he yelled. Why don’t you tell everyone here who killed

Mufasa,”

Scar roared, Sorrow flooded Simba’s heart.

Simba backed away in horror and his hind legs slipped off

the cliff.

“Scar went to the edge and said”

“This is how Mufasa looked before I killed him.”

“Murderer!” cried Simba as he lunged at Scar’s throat.

“Tell everyone what you just said,”

“I killed Mufasa,” Scar yelled.

With ear piercing battle cries, the lioness chased the

hyenas away.

“Please don’t hurt me,” pleaded Scar.

“I am your family.”

Simba paused to consider his uncle’s plea. “Run away then,

and never show your face again,” said Simba.

Scar pretended to leave, “Y-yes your Majesty.” Then,

snarling, he spun around and struck Simba.

Simba moved quickly. “You’ve lost your chance!” he

roared as he heaved Scar over the edge.

The Pride Lands came back to life. One bright dawn, all the

animals once again journeyed to the foot of the Pride Rock.

On top of Pride Rock, Rafiki raised a cub – the daughter of

the King Simba and Queen Nala – high in the air.

She would be the future Queen of the Pride Lands.
