In collaboration with the local
self governments ofSambalpur, Bargarh, Hirakudand Brajarajnagar, BISWAundertook the urbansanitation activities in someparts of those urban areas.Self Help Groups (SHGs)were formed by theparticipating sanitationworkers and their activities
brought BISWA familiaritywith the problems pertainingto urban sanitation andsuggested waysmeans and tomitigate the degree of theproblems. One of the gravesituations identified was theusage of plastic in all walksof life, by all sections and forall purposes. The advantageof use of plastic brought
along with it a greater disaster,as it is not bio-degradable. The onlysolution that appeared was to recyclethe used matter and thus limits its mingling
with the earth. Plastic is the best when
in usage but the worst whenidle and loitering. Then itposes grave dangers to thefertility of land and also forgrazing bovine and itsinflammability has broughtirreplaceable loss to many.
The matter in context of plasticusage was viewed withpredisposition of finding a
more or less permanentsolution to it and then camethe concept of a Waste PlasticUnit, that would recycle theplastic collected from variousareas. Recently the use ofplastic has also seen a boomin rural areas. A series ofsessions with variousstakeholders in thecommercial aspects of the
unit, a survey of availability ofwaste plastic, the viability of the unit toreach at a break-even point andsustainability etc. materialized in the

The requirement of energy has gone up in
last few years and would touch
unimaginable proportion because of
population explosion and improved living
standards in our country. In Rural India, people used cow dung and wood for their
energy needs. With better economic
conditions, more and more people are using
cleaner and more convenient forms of
energy viz. Electricity and Gas for home
usage. The availability of both these forms
of energy is limited. The shortage results
in frequent power breakdowns - disrupt
daily life, manpower loss in offices and
adversely affect the industrial production. The shortage of energy and increasing
tariff trends, dictates that every socially
responsible individuals should conserve
energy as much as possible. That will in
turn reduce the load on National Utility
Services as well as the economic burden.
The waste plastic unit of BISWA has added
another innovative feather to its
achievement. This will help in poverty
alleviation without having to lose its prime
objective to free the area from loitering
waste plastic and reuse & recycle it.
