TODAY’S READINGS
1st Reading: 1 Samuel 26:2,7-9,12-13,22-23
2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:45-49
Gospel: Luke 6:27-38
A Least Favorite Gospel: The Winner Is….
I’d agree with T. Denise Anderson, Presbyterian minister, that today’s sample from Luke’s Sermon on the Plain (His version of Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount) is not a favorite within the three year Sunday scripture cycle to digest and appreciate. To really “hear” and take to heart Jesus’ teaching – including among the milder challenges - to “do good to those who hate you … pray for those who mistreat you … stop condemning” puts you deep into His Kingdom territory. You will need more than a visa to get in here. To travel this extraordinary route you need a strong dose of God’s grace, God’s essence to “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Six Principals of Nonviolence offers some practical tools for Jesus’ disciples to absorb His teaching. I believe they give insight into living out of today’s Gospel even if you do not completely buy into a pure non-violent theology. Let me sample two of these perspectives, namely, for courageous people nonviolence is an aggressive way of life spiritually, mentally and emotionally, and nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice not people. First, nonviolence as an aggressive way of living spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Sr. Dorothy Stang, an American-born nun, had worked for decades among exploited Brazilian farmers. Her work marked her as an enemy by some of the ranchers and loggers. As recounted by Robert Ellsberg, in 2005 while Sr. Dorothy was on a road to meet with some farmers, “her way was blocked by two hired gunmen who asked whether she carried any weapon. In reply she produced her Bible and began to read the Beatitudes: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit … blessed are the peacemakers.’ And then they shot her.” Sr. Dorothy instinctively lived and died in the Gospel. I ask for the grace to live at least some of our Gospel with a sliver of her spiritual, mental, and emotional intensity. Second, nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice not people. Today’s toxic atmosphere seems to relish demonizing anyone who disagrees with our viewpoint. But defeating injustice not people means a disciplined openness to understanding the other person without seeking to defeat or humiliate those with opposing views. Demonizing others tends to polarize and encourage digging in rather than to seek common ground or, if that is not possible, than to respectfully agree to disagree on the matters in question.
Christ’s high expectations end game is too release us into a freedom to receive the full measure of His overflowing love. In the Lord’s Overflowing Blessings,
Fr. Tom Libera

Living Discipleship
through Spirit, Gifts, and Service
4 And when they could not get near Him because of the crowd, the removed the roof above Him; and when they had made an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. 5 And when Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “My son, your sins are forgiven.” Mark 2:4-5
We appreciate your generosity. As you can see, our envelope collection and Mass attendance were down. We encourage everyone to consider online giving either by ACH or Give Central (https://www.givecentral.org/login). Interested? Give us a call at the Rectory (773) 561-3474 for assistance.
STEWARDSHIP PRAYER
Almighty God, we thank you for all the gifts You have given
us: our lives, our loved ones, all that we have and all that we
are. Most of all, we thank You for Jesus, Your Son and our
Redeemer, who came among us to show us the way to eternal
life. Jesus was the perfect steward of your gifts, showing that
complete trust in You is necessary, and that giving of self is a
most important part of following Him. May the offerings of our
time, our talents, and our material resources be made in the
same spirit of sacrifice that Jesus taught us by His life and
death for us. Amen.

A Prayer for “Renew My Church”
Lord Jesus, You speak to us today
as You spoke
to holy men and women
who have gone before us.
In every age and in our own time,
You call to us and say:
Renew My Church.
Pour out the gift of Your Holy Spirit upon us,
and so enable us
to hear You clearly,
to listen to each other attentively,
to imagine our future boldly,
to discern Your direction wisely,
to persevere in Your holy will courageously,
to stay together in charity,
to surrender our own plans readily,
to embrace the greater good,
to hand on Your gifts to future generations.
May we remain in the holy company
of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
the apostles, and all the saints.
May their example and presence
inspire us with patient confidence
in the work of Your grace.
We ask this of you
who live and reign with the Father
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
forever and ever. Amen.

Our Lady of Lourdes Airs Film
Unprotected: a Pope, the Pill
and the Perils of Sexual Chaos
This recently produced documentary is being shown
on Sunday, March 17th, at Our Lady of Lourdes
Parish, 4640 N. Ashland. The film looks at the
devastating effects of the sexual revolution, and how
it negatively impacts women. It tells how fifty years
ago, Pope Paul VI predicted the results of a culture
that disregards the teachings of the encyclical
Humane Vitae.
Several well-known commentators including
Christopher West, who often discusses Theology of
the Body, are featured. Written by Don Johnson, a
former Relevant Radio host, it is distributed by St.
Ignatius Press.
The showing is preceded by the Rosary at 3:30 pm
and followed by refreshments at 5:15 pm.

2019 Annual Catholic Appeal
“Come, Follow Me … and Share the Word”
Commitment Weekend - February 23 & 24, 2019
This weekend, our parish is conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal “in pew”
Commitment Weekend. Please remember that this is not a one-time special collection.
Rather, it is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.
This year’s theme “Come, Follow Me … and Share the Word” was selected to remind us
to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing
the needed financial support to fund ministries and services where God’s love can be
shared with many others in our Parish and Archdiocese.
Each pledge makes a difference! All parish communities participate in this campaign,
and the gifts of many enable our parishes, schools and ministries deliver needed services.
What are some of the ways the money from the Appeal is used? 60% supports
financially disadvantaged parishes and schools. 29% is used for Archdiocesan ministries
— evangelization, human dignity efforts, family and community ministries, religious
education, and continuing education for priests, staff, and lay volunteers. 4% supports
Catholic Relief Services which helps those suffering from natural disasters around the
world. The remaining money pays for
the printing, postage and processing
costs of the campaign. Zero dollars will
be used to defray expenses related to
misconduct issues.
Among the Archdiocesan ministries
supported by the Appeal are the Kolbe
House Jail Ministry, the Respect Life
Ministry, Immigration Ministry, and
Ministry to the Youth & Young Adults,
Family & Community Ministries such as
Chicago Police & Fire Chaplaincies,
marriage support and family ministries.
The task sounds daunting, but with the
help of every Catholic, giving what he or
she is able, and then a little more, it can
be accomplished. God bless each and
every one of you.
