With music by
Far from the Madding Crowd
All welcome — come and join us!
Please bring family and friends.
To all tennis players Advance notice
Tennis Tournament - 2nd September 2012
We are organising an informal Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament in the King’s
Somborne area on Sunday 2 September 2012 and very much hope that you will
take part.
The entrance fee, which will include lunch with drinks and tea, will be £17.50
per player with a reduced fee of £12.50 for those under 18 or still in full time
education.
It would be helpful if you could organise your own tennis partner, but if not we
shall try and pair people up.
The winning couple on each court will go through to a play-off in the knock-out
stage. Cream teas will be served.
Non-players will be very welcome as spectators and for tea (£5).
Please put this date in your diaries now and if you would like to play contact
David Evans on 01794 388246. An entry form will appear in later editions of
The Gauntlet.

May is fast approaching and we shall
soon be saying goodbye to our Vicar,
the Rev Robert Stapleton, and to his
wife Rosemary. As they look forward
to a quiet retirement, the new Test
Valley Benefice will be formed on 1st
June when the Rev Jonathan Watkins,
at present priest-in-charge of the
Stockbridge Benefice, will become
Vicar of the new Benefice.
On Saturday 26th May at 5.00pm we
shall be holding a farewell tea party for
Rob and Rosemary in the grounds of
the Parish Church to which all are
invited. The following morning,
Sunday 27th May at 10.00am, will be
Rob’s last service and as it is Pentecost
we shall be joined by Christians in
Somborne for a United Service.
Later on in the afternoon, the Annual
Summer Fair takes place in the
gardens of the Old Vicarage and we
hope that as many of you as possible
will come along and support the event.
Hopefully it will be a splendid sunny
and warm day after the torrential rain
last year—surely it couldn’t happen
two years running—but if wet we shall
move to the Village Hall. (See pages 7
and 12 for details.)
The new service pattern (shown
below) will come into effect from the
1st June. Please check at the back of
The Gauntlet each month to see the
changes that will be made. Although
we shall be part of the new benefice,
the Parish of Somborne will still be the
same. It is just that we now only have
one vicar to serve four churches and
therefore he cannot be at all at the
same time! Should you have any
queries with regard to the future please
do not hesitate to contact either of us
churchwardens.

There were 42 valid (non-duplicate)
responses (15 by girls and 27 by boys)
to the questionnaire conducted via the
Sombornes website with the generous
help of Tim Long. Indoor table tennis
was easily the most highly scored
individual choice. The establishment
of an informal Somborne table tennis
club is supported by the Village Hall
Management Committee and by the
Parish Council, which agreed to the
purchase of two tables and nets which
are currently on order. All players of
10 years and older will be eligible to
join and will pay to play in order to
cover the room hire fee. Many
youngsters and a few adults have
indicated interest in playing. Players
will each have to bring their own bats
and one ball. It will be necessary for
there to be at least one adult present to
organise and supervise each session.
The most likely initial time for
sessions is between 11.00am and
1.00pm on Sunday mornings. Offers
from adults to help with supervision
are welcome.
The order of preference for other
choices was as follows: small-team
(for example 5-a-side) football, basket
ball, uprated skate ramp, outdoor
tennis, kickwall, outdoor table tennis,
basketball target, hockey and netball.
The youth shelter attracted no votes.
The first, second, fourth, eighth and
tenth of these choices can be
accommodated by a Multi-Use Games
Area (MUGA) which therefore
represents the most popular overall
investment for the community. The
Parish Council has commissioned the
preparation of a costed plan for a
MUGA.
In addition, following on from
consultation with a number of local
skateboard enthusiasts, the possible
removal of the half-pipe and
installation of a more popular form of
skateboard track is being investigated.

In a passionate final in front of over
200 spectators at Whitchurch, King’s
Somborne deservedly won the North
Hants Junior Cup. It was the first time
in 6 years that the cup has been won by
an Andover League side, having been
held by Basingstoke clubs for that
period.
Tron, from Overton, had some early
pressure, forcing a few corners, but the
Somborne defence held firm. After the
frantic opening, Somborne settled into
the game and their midfield started to
dictate play. Towards half time,
Robbie Peters pounced on a through
ball and drilled the ball home to put
Somborne ahead.
After the break, Somborne continued
to press and started to pull the Tron
midfield all over the place by getting
their passing game into gear. The
second goal came soon enough, the
Tron defence being put under pressure
to give the ball away and, with the
keeper out of position, Ed Clements
flighted a superb
shot into the far
corner from well
outside the area.
Tron threatened
occasionally, but
the only strong
s h o t t h e y
produced was
confidently saved
by keeper and
Cap ta in Dan
Goodson, who
marshalled his defence superbly
throughout. As the game became
stretched, the Somborne players
showed their fitness and there could
have been more goals. Timo Oram
and Josh Barnes rounded off excellent
performances by almost scoring, only
being denied at the last by the Tron
keeper. In the end Somborne ran out
comfortable winners, a fitting reward
for the style of football they have been
playing as the season has progressed.

Barnes, Lee Castle, Edward Clements,

Goodson, Aaron Joyner, Adam

With plenty of pictures for inspiration
this year, I have decided to bring back
the costumes classes. These will be
judged after the school band have

Once more, we thank Mr and Mrs

enjoy their lovely garden and hope that
the weather will be warm and sunny,
unlike last year’s downpour all day!
Many of us will be having a very busy
spring, but the Summer Fair is an
excellent opportunity to spend time
with friends. As a Sunday afternoon
seemed to be popular with families, we
have arranged it for that time again this
year.

We were delighted to welcome 38
members and guests to our Annual
General Meeting on Thursday 12th
April in the Village Hall.
The Chairman, Brian Orange, reported
the retirement of our President,
Rosemary Horsey, earlier in the year,
and was pleased to have welcomed
Nickey Buckley onto the committee.
The year had gone well, starting with
the summer outing to revisit the garden
of Dick and Gillian Pugh, at the
Buildings at Broughton, whose garden
had been completely replanted since
our previous visit several years ago.
This was followed with a barbecue in
the garden at Howe Park, by kind
permission of Caroline Halse, where
we were fortunate to enjoy the bonus
of a second delightful garden and the
entertainment by resident peafowl.
The Annual Flower Show on the 23rd
July had been a success. Along with
the fun of the Dog Show, it was made
more enjoyable by the good weather
and the spectacle of the huge climbing
wall. The wall was arranged by Tony
Ward and we are pleased to have
secured it again for this year’s show.
In the autumn, we welcomed Helen
Elks-Smith, well known garden
designer, to talk to us about some of
the great gardens she has worked on.
She also told us of things we should
consider in our own gardens, with
regards to trees, plants and hard
landscaping.
This year we plan to visit the garden of
“The Island” at Greatbridge, home of
Sarah Saunders-Davies, on 5th July.
Brian had been welcomed to the Chair
of the Horticultural society in 1998.
He now felt that the time had come to
hand over to a new Chairman who
would bring fresh ideas to the Society.
As Treasurer, Patrick reported that the
Show had a made a small profit of £12.
Whilst the entry fees had been
increased, there was still a larger
outgoing on the payment of prize
money. The cake stall and Bouncy
Castle had not returned such good
takings, so we hope to improve upon
that this year. Donations had been
made to the King’s Somborne Primary
School, for the Maypole Dancers and

the 6th - 8th July, and for which we
have been invited to prepare a

The formal meeting concluded at
8.35pm. There followed a break for
refreshments and the raffle.
The Chairman then introduced our
guest speaker for the evening, Mr.
Marcus Dancer, (“Clematis Plants”)
from Sandleheath, who gave us a
wonderfully uplifting calendar of
scented plants throughout the year.
These ranged from Christmas Box and
Lonicera Winter Beauty in January,
Daphnes Jacqueline Postill and
Aureomarginata in March and April,
through Autumn Camelias in
September /October, to Chimonanthus
Praecox “Wintersweet” in December.
Marcus also indulged members with a
retail opportunity from a selection of
some of his own plants for sale on the
evening. There was also some helpful
advice on Clematis!

This has been a very busy time at the
Hall with work on the Jubilee Room
and store rooms nearing completion.
You will have noticed that the control
box for the football lights and the
sound box have now been re-housed at
the back of the stage. The store room
floors have been tiled and sealed to
control any dust from the concrete
screed. Unfortunately, more dust was
created when the door between the
Main Hall and Jubilee Room was cut
and once again we are grateful to our
hirers for their patience while this
work was undertaken.
By the time you read this, the Hall
should be much cleaner and tidier as
most of the current construction work
will have been completed. A working
party, made up of willing volunteers,
will have given the place a good tidy
up and disposed of a lot of the rubbish
that has accumulated over the years.
In order to contribute to further
improvements to the Hall, a series of
fundraising events will take place
during May and June starting with the
Clay Pigeon Shoot on 11th May. This
event, which has been so successful in
the past, is once again being organised
by the Fund Raising Committee. We
already have many entries and it is
hoped to exceed the amount raised last
year. This will be followed by the
Beer and Music Festival on 23rd June
and a Variety Show on 30th June
which is very kindly being organised
by the Somborne Players.
There will be celebrations at the Hall
on Saturday 2nd June when the Jubilee
Room will be officially opened by
Lady Appleyard. This will take place
early in the afternoon as part of the
commemorations being organised by
Village Organisations to mark the
Diamond Jubilee.
Last but not least, please do not
forget the AGM which will take
place in the Hall on Thursday 3rd
May starting at 7.30pm. All are
welcome. The Agenda and the
Minutes from the last meeting can be
obtained from Eileen Reynolds on

District diary for May

The Somborne
and District Society At our March meeting, Geoffrey
Morris spoke about the King Alfred
Motor Services.
At the age of twelve, Robert Chisnell
became the family breadwinner when
his father died. He was to become
quite an entrepreneur, but his main
opportunity came during the First
World War when 30,000 American
troops were stationed on Morn Hill,
Winchester. He began a taxi service
carrying the men into the city when
they were off duty. He eventually
bought three taxis. He wisely always
made sure that the men paid their fare
at the beginning of their journey! In
Winchester the troops enjoyed a meal
(one choice only!) of sausage, peas and
onions at the nearby Supper Rooms.
At the end of the war, Robert bought
three Leyland motors, to which he
added charabanc bodies. These were
intended for private use and were
painted the familiar green with the
words King Alfred on the rear panel.
In 1932 he began his first bus service
to St. Cross and Shawford. More
routes followed and the fleet included
an Albion motor which had the
advantage of being waterproof! On
the 10 December 1930 the newest
ro u te , K ing’s So mb orne v ia
Flowerdown came into being. But
there was competition from Mr G E
Martin Cooper, who ran a service on
three days a week, the Wilts and
Dorset Service, and also from local
resident, Charles Emmence.
The Road Traffic Act of 1930 caused
many small companies to go into
receivership but King Alfred Services
managed to survive. Its network
stretched to include all the city and
places such as Basingstoke, and
Fisher’s Pond.
The Second World War brought
problems with shortages of fuel,
drivers, tyres, etc. Conductresses
appeared for the first time, and many
residents will remember May Boyce
who became the cheery conductress on
the King’s Somborne route.
Robert Chisnell died in 1945 and his
sons, “Mr. Bob” and “Mr. Fred”, took
over the running of the business.
When they finally retired, the service
came to a close and the familiar green
buses with the distinctive statue of
King Alfred on the side disappeared
from the streets.
Our speaker is a member of “Friends
of King Alfred Buses”. This charity
has been successful in tracking down
some of the old vehicles, some even
being discovered in the USA. They
restore these old buses which can be
seen each year on the 1st January when
they ral ly a t the Broadway,
Winchester.
Our final talk for the season will be on
23rd May, when Phoebe Merrick from
Romsey will talk about Middlebridge
Street in Romsey. Visitors are always
welcome.

Born on Friday the thirteenth, Toni
Simmonds chose this auspicious day
for the re-launch of the John O’Gaunt
and it certainly proved a good omen.
It was not so much ‘dancing in the
streets’ as ‘drinking in the streets’; the
pub was packed with so many
wellwishers at the Gala Opening that
some guests had to gather with their
pints outside on Horsebridge Road. It
was great to see familiar faces from
Horsebridge, King’s Somborne and
Houghton mixing with past regulars
from further afield such as Romsey
and Chandlers Ford. Toni and her
staff were kept busy at the bar
throughout the evening without a
break, while chef Lee produced trays
of delicious buffet food. Many guests
brought good luck cards and Toni was
presented with two cakes - one
decorated with the John O’Gaunt
shield and another in the shape of the
pub itself with a very glamorous Toni
sitting outside!
It was great to see the John O’Gaunt
once again bursting with activity.
Already the re-launched pub has
exceeded expectations as both
lunchtimes and evenings have proved
popular with locals and visitors alike
since its unofficial opening on Easter
Saturday. The locals of Horsebridge
thank Toni for restoring the heart of
this small hamlet in the shape of its
historic and long-standing inn.

Listen 2 Me Concert
Years 3 and 4 Just before Christmas parents and
friends of children in years 3 and 4
enjoyed a delightful concert, during
which the children demonstrated the
guitar skills they had mastered after
just one term’s work. Just before
Easter they were treated to another
equally enjoyable concert, but this
time the children were playing the
violin and cello. Mrs Windsor
welcomed everyone to the concert,
stressing how hard the children had
been working - a sentiment echoed by
their instrument teacher, whom the
children call Mrs S, due to a
challenging Polish name! When the
concert began, it soon became clear
that a great deal of hard work had been
going on but, judging by the children’s
expressions, a lot of fun had also been
generated. Ellie Chadwick gave a very
competent explanation of the use of
violin bows. During the playing of the
varied lively music the audience
strived to keep still – not easy when
listening to music with such titles as
‘Boogie Woogie’, ‘No bow Joe’ and
‘Disco Nights’. At the conclusion of
the concert, Mrs Windsor said how
impressed she had been at the way in
which the children had come together
as a playing group and achieved so
much in just eight sessions.
Assembly :Years 1and 2 There was quite literally standing room
only for Years 1 and 2’s assembly
towards the end of last term. The
theme of the assembly was ‘Who
wants to be a millionnaire’ – but with a
difference. The children had been
learning about fairy tales and so the
questions asked all focussed on fairy
tales, posing such questions as ‘What
do all fairy tales have in common?’,
‘How do fairy tales end?, ‘How did
Jack’s beanstalk grow?’ and ‘How do
fairies and witches cast their spells?’
The children read aloud from work
they had done in class, including witch
recipes they had written and work with
links with science. A good indication
of the success of such efforts is the
attention with which other children
listen, and all the classes were
interested and most attentive
throughout. The children are
particularly to be congratulated on the
high standard of their reading aloud-
not only were they word perfect but
their diction was perfect with every
word audible. Mr Winning thanked
the children for a lovely assembly,
describing the children as ‘experts’.
Assembly:Years 5 and 6, Parents and friends awaiting the start
of this assembly were kept well
entertained with a slide show of the
children’s recent residential visit to
Calshot. The children assumed the
role of news reporters as they
interviewed a variety of sports
participants, emphasising that ‘This is
not just breakfast, this is Calshot
breakfast’ and adopting appropriate
language styles and gestures. The
‘programme’ also included ‘The
Golden Calshot’ quiz and the item on
‘French food made easy’ was delivered
in an impressively convincing French
School news
25
accent! The presentation concluded
with a Poetry Corner. Mr Winning
thanked the children, after which he
presented medals and certificates to the
school’s successful netball team and
certificates to the school’s football
team. After the younger children had
left, children in years 5 and 6 were
able to see the photographs taken at
Calshot and it was clear that these
brought back many happy memories.
Parents and friends were able to see
the wide range of activities in which
the children had been involved and it
was particularly appropriate to see
them being photographed outside the
Sopwith Hangar !!

The village flower and vegetable show
has been in existence for many years
and is intended to be an amateur
competition for amusement and
enjoyment with the added attraction of
some cups and prizes. All of you who
have a garden take pleasure in growing
plants and vegetables and this is an
opportunity to put some of them on
display and compare your efforts with
those of other gardeners. If gardening
does not interest you, look at the
classes for cooking, arts and crafts, and
particularly at the children’s classes.
Even if you decide on only one entry
do ‘have a go’ and put it in to the
show.
Obtain a schedule from either shop or
the pub (available from April). Read
the schedule very carefully as this will
give you most of the information that
you need including the principal rules.
Having read the schedule decide what
you would like to enter, although this
will probably change just before the
show when you decide exactly what is
available. There are always variations
caused by the weather and you should
look to see what is good during the
week of the show.
Consider whether you need to protect
your entries during the week before.
You may need to dig or pick your
vegetables or fruit the day before.

13. A plant grown from a seed or cutting in this year - in a 3" or 5" pot.
All ages up to 13 years.

Flowers are usually best left to the last
minute for cutting but can be cut
earlier, if the weather is bad, and kept
in water. Think how you wish to
present your entry - and exactly what
the schedule calls for.
If you are entering any of the arts and
crafts or flower arranging classes, you
will probably have prepared your entry
during the week - or earlier - before
the show.
To make your entries, fill in the form
in the schedule and send it to the
people listed in the schedule or bring it
to the Village Hall on the Wednesday
night before the show. You will
receive in return an official entry card
for each entry. Fill these in on both
sides and bring them with you to place
with your produce on the morning of
the show.
All entries must be in place in the hall
before 10.30am on Show day. You
will find marked areas on the table
with the schedule numbers. These
have been worked out according to the
entry forms. Place your entry on the
correct area and make sure that you
have the correct number of items
according to the schedule. There will
be stewards to help you if you have
any questions. Give yourself time to
arrange your produce to its best
advantage.
The judging is carried out by judges
authorised by the Royal Horticultural
Society, but they base their judging on
the fact that this is a village show for
amateurs and not a high level battle
between experts.
Don’t forget to collect your entries
after 4.00pm and collect your cups and
prize money at the same time!
Remember that the show is for fun so
do collect a schedule and enter
something this year. If you have any
questions at all or would like to refer
to the show handbook please contact
Pollyann Monk 388482 or Patrick
Holligan 388484.

It’s not every day when a group of
under-5s get a visit from the police,
but before the Easter break, that’s just
what happened. Our local Community
Support Officer, PC Sophie Downing,
dropped in to answer lots of questions
about what the police do as well as to
give advice on how to keep safe.
The children starting school in
September have also been busy
visiting the school library to
familiarise themselves with it. They
will be meeting the reception class in
the Summer term and cheering on the
teams at the Sports Day too. So, by
the time September comes, school will
hopefully not be such a daunting
prospect.
We would like to thank everyone who
has kindly donated money to the Pre-
School recently. Donations and
fundraising are so important to us in
these early months of being open and
we really
appreciate all
the support
we’ve received from people in the
village so far – every penny really does
help!
On a fundraising note, we’re looking
forward to manning various stalls at
the village Jubilee celebrations, and
hope to see as many of our pre-school
children entering the Jubilee Crown
competition as possible. For more
information, see pages 10 and 17.
If you’re interested in starting your
child with us, please call our
supervisor, Zoe Stevens on 07530
893773, visit our website
www.thesombornespreschool.org or
log on to The Sombornes village

Women’s Institute The meeting on 11th April was chaired
by our Vice-President, Mrs. Frances
Shone, who welcomed a new member.
Reports were made on the month’s
activities, including a Book Club
meeting, weekly walks and attendance
at a Coffee Morning at Awbridge WI,
organised by the Romsey Show Tent
Committee. Also, members were
thanked for their contributions to cake
sales, including a stall outside the
Parish Church on Easter Saturday.
The Test Valley Group Spring Meeting
on 2nd April at Lockerley Village Hall
was run this year by King’s Somborne
and the very welcome speaker,
Admiral John Lang, gave an excellent
lecture on “The London River”.
The topic for this month’s talk was
“Messages from Music” by Mrs
Margaret Payne. She, with the aid of a
CD player, once again shared her
delight in music of all kinds - classical
and modern - and stressed the
importance of really listening to music,
not just hearing it. A good opening
note was struck with the familiar first
chords of Beethoven’s Fifth
Symphony, followed by the sharply
contrasting “Pastoral” Symphony.
Going back a century to Vivaldi, we
heard brief excerpts from his evocative
“Four Seasons” and (from much more
recent times) beautifully descriptive
passages from a composition by the
Italian composer Einaudi, entitled “Le
Onde” (The Waves), with its relaxing,
hypnotic water sounds.
Mrs. Payne demonstrated, in less
serious vein, how familiar signature
tunes from radio and TV can instantly
evoke memories, not only of a
programme but of an era too.
Examples of these ranged from
“Desert Island Discs” and “Bring me
Sunshine" (Morecombe and Wise) to
way back in the 1940’s with
“Housewives’ Choice” and “Much-
Binding-in-the-Marsh”.
Members heard a tape recording of a
remarkable piano duet played by Mrs.
Payne and her mother, of a piece in
which the composer (William Walton)
conjured up the sound of yodelling.
One favourite of Mrs. Payne’s was a
hypnotic piece by the Irish singer-
songwriter Enya from Donegal, called
“Memory of Trees”. The final CD was
“The Lark Ascending” by Vaughan
Williams, which evoked the song of
the lark - a charming note on which to
end! Mrs. Payne was given a vote of
thanks and the evening ended with the
usual refreshments.
The next meeting will be the
Resolutions and Annual General
Meeting, to be held in the VILLAGE
HALL (please note!) at 7.30pm on
Wednesday, 9 May. All are welcome.

We are sad to report that Cyril died in
hospital just before Easter on his 90th
birthday. Cyril will be remembered by
many of you for over 25 years of deep
commitment to many of the village
organisations. He came to the village
with his wife Rene in 1969 following
his appointment as head of a school in
Southampton. He stayed until Rene’s
ill health persuaded them to move to
be near their daughter Elizabeth and
family in Market Harborough in 1995.
Despite starting a new job and moving
to a new home, he soon found time to
become involved with many of the
village activities. He continued to
study for his MA.Ed in which he
graduated from Southampton in 1977.
He was “the voice of King’s
Somborne”, known to many for his
commentaries at the Village Carnivals
and Annual Flower Shows as well as
for his prolific work as Village
Correspondent for the Hampshire
Chronicle and other local newspapers.
He published “Chronicling Somborne”
with his contributions to the Chronicle
for 10 years from 1984. With Rene, he
took over the editing and printing of
The Gauntlet from Revd Raymond
Coates in 1982 and together (as Little
Gaunt printers) they produced the
magazine for over 13 years!
After their arrival in King’s Somborne,
the Pigotts quickly joined the Church
and Cyril became Churchwarden in
1974 (until 1979). During this time, he
organised several major fund-raising
activities for the Church including a
Horse Show and Gymkhana in 1978
and “A Hampshire Week-end” in
1979. Later, when the Church
embarked on a major restoration
project and the Tower Appeal was
launched (raising £35,000), Cyril
chaired the steering committee for the
associated and very successful
Pageant. In this, Cyril was cast as the
Revd Richard Dawes reflecting his
general interest in education and in
local schools in particular. He found
time to research the lives of both
Dawes, about whom he wrote a
chapter of “Celebrating Somborne”,
and later Sir Thomas Sopwith. He
Cyril Pigott (1922-2012) who “never walked if he could run”!
Cyril in the role of Revd Richard Dawes
33
subsequently gave polished and
amusing talks on both personalities to
the Somborne Society and many other
organisations. The Pageant spawned
the Somborne Players in whose
productions Cyril often played. He
took part in the 150th anniversary
celebrations for the school, once again
playing the role of Dawes.
In 1974/5 Cyril chaired the committee
which organised the opening of the
new Village Hall by Lady Sopwith and
went on to chair the Village Hall
Carnival Committee until 1994.
Before coming to the village he and
Rene had run conducted holiday coach
tours during the summer, both at home
and abroad and they continued to do
this to the enjoyment of many local
residents.
When the Needleworkers decided to
stitch a panel for inclusion in the Test
Valley Tapestry in 1985, the Pigotts
were both involved and each added
some stitches – Cyril went on to write
the introduction and commentary for
the descriptive book which was
published in 1995, and then
encouraged the U3A in Market
Harborough to produce a Tapestry
there after he left King’s Somborne!
Some time after Rene’s sad death in
1996, Cyril met and then married Eve
with whom he spent fourteen further
happy years of marriage and
enjoyment in a busy life together in
Market Harborough. At their wedding,
the Vicar remarked that this was the
first time that he had conducted the
ceremony for a couple whose
aggregate ages exceeded 150!
Our village was very lucky to have
benefited from so many years of
enthusiastic, creative and dedicated
service from such a man – may there
be more like him in the future.
Cyril was cremated in Leicestershire
on Maundy Thursday. There will be a
short Thanksgiving Service for his life
here in King’s Somborne at 2.00pm on
4th May, when his ashes will be placed
with Rene’s in the Garden of
Remembrance. All are welcome to
attend.

Successful Spring Sale for the
Friends The Friends’ most recent event, a very
successful Spring Sale held on 24th
March in the Village Hall, raised a
handsome sum of £700. Thanks go
from the Committee to all who assisted
or contributed in any way.
Together with the funds raised from
the one man play, The Monarch of
Wit, this means that approximately
£1,300 has been raised so far in 2012.
This is a very welcome addition to the
funds contributed through membership
subscriptions and previous events. We
will be in a position shortly to allocate
a substantial sum for repairs to the
fabric of the Church identified in the
Quinquennial Review.
Join the Friends Membership of the Friends is open to
everyone and we are always delighted
to welcome new members. Our aim is
to preserve the Church as a historic
building. As you might expect with
such an old building, this poses the
challenge of raising substantial funds
on an on-going basis for both
necessary maintenance and potentially
more major projects.
We therefore organise a number of
events each year to raise money. Our
events have no religious content and
we encourage everyone, church-goer
or not, to support this important part of
our village heritage. In addition to
fund raising events (concerts, plays,
tennis, etc), the Committee organises a
couple of member-only events during
the year to enable members to get to
know one another. The next social
event, a summer drinks party, is
planned for the 17th June so please do
join us and come along.

Our spring service on Palm Sunday
was a great success although it was
tinged with sadness because it was
Robert Stapleton’s last service at
Ashley prior to his retirement. Rob
has been a very good friend to Ashley
since he was appointed to the parish of
King’s Somborne with Ashley eight
years ago. Not only has he been very
assiduous in conducting our three
services a year, he has also served on
the committee of the Friends of Ashley
St Mary and given us much wise
advice.
Sunday was a beautiful day and we
had a very large congregation boosted
by many people from King’s
Somborne. The service was relaxed
and welcoming as suited the occasion.
Afterwards Richard Nevines, the
Chairman of the Friends, gave a tribute
to Rob and presented him with a lovely
picture of the church (specially painted
for the occasion by Thelma Blamey) as
well as a monetary gift. Rosemary
was also given a gift of flowers.
Afterwards we all celebrated with
Bucks Fizz and cheese straws! The
whole event
w a s v e r y
happy and
informal.
Of course, once Robert leaves there
will be a new scenario with the
formation of the new benefice. As yet
we are not sure of the future of Ashley
in the grand plan although we
understand that we will continue to
have three services a year. It is
unlikely that the vicar will be able to
conduct them all.
One other unexpected and sad piece of
news is that Francis Hurd (our
regional officer) is resigning from the
Churches Conservation Trust .
Francis has always been extremely
supportive to Ashley and she will be
sorely missed. Apparently the CCT
has had severe financial cutbacks
and its Regional Officers have all had
t o t a k e o n m o r e d u t i e s .
Francis would have had to be
responsible for all the redundant
churches in Hampshire, Wiltshire and
Oxfordshire and she feels that it is
impossible to service so many
churches with the same
quality of oversight that she
was previously able to exert.
We are very sorry that she is
leaving but hopefully there
should be someone else to
replace her in due course.
The AGM of the Friends and
our next service will be held
in the autumn.

Since the Easter break, Tiny Tots have
star ted thinking about God’s
Wonderful World. Our first session
was based around the Sun, Moon and
Stars which we see in the sky. We had
fun exploring stars through the
mediums of chalk, glitter and stickers.
We then moved onto Bugs and have
discovered all the wonderful creepy,
crawly and beautiful small creatures in
the world. The children painted
butterflies and made weird and
w o n d e r f u l
clay bugs!
A l l o u r
sessions end
with songs and music which the
children really enjoy and we have had
fun singing “Twinkle, Twinkle” and
“Insy Winsy Spider”.
We will be meeting on the following
Tuesdays in May at 2.00pm in the
Church: 1st, 8th, 15 and 22nd.

Home Group We meet at 8.00pm usually on the third Thursday of each month.
We are a relatively small group of Christians from different traditions
who meet for informal study, discussion and fellowship and we would very
much welcome any newcomers who care to come along and join us.

Funday Club is an After School club
for years ‘R to Year 4’ which meets
on a Monday afternoon. We aim to
look at the Christian faith in a fun way
with the children through games
stories and craft.
Before the start of the Easter
Holidays ,we thought about our Mums
and also learnt about the Easter Story.
For Mothering Sunday, we made
baskets for our Mums and put sweets
in them (although whether the sweets
made it to Mum I am not sure!).
Some of the children from Funday
Club also took part in the Mothering
Sunday Service at church where they
read the prayers.
We learnt about the Easter Story by
listening to two versions of the story.
We also had fun having egg and
spoon races and tunnel relays as well
as making crosses and Easter cards to
take home.
We have had a break for Easter and
are now going to learn about the
Parables.

The Minister has the last word Dear Friends,
Subjects for the May Last Word are usually easier to find than some months. For
the Church the great feast of Pentecost, when we celebrate the birth of the church,
tends to dominate the timetable but there is also Ascension Day and Christian Aid
week.
Newcomers to the area may not realise that Pentecost is also the time we
celebrate the signing of our local Christians Together Covenant and also use the
opportunity of our joint worship to renew it. We chose to do this at Pentecost
rather than the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity partly because it seemed more
appropriate but also because the weather made it easier for us all to come
together.
Recently we saw a play about Anne Boleyn. It was interesting as it portrayed her
as a very religious person. She was enthusiastic about the new Church of
England, not only because it gave permission for her to marry Henry VIII but also
because it made religion more accessible to ordinary people. She also apparently
read the Tyndale translation of the bible for the same reason, a risk in those days
for it was banned. The play showed some of the disputes between the different
branches of the Protestant Church, which was very interesting as it suggested
there had always been divisions in the church of England ever since it began.
Current religious articles suggest there will be more division following the
retirement of Rowan Williams and also that the Roman Catholic Church will have
the same problems in years to come. The play on Anne Boleyn also showed that
the leaders of the different branches found they could come together on the things
that mattered, even then! Most ordinary people probably did not even understand
the issues involved.
I am pleased to say the different denominations and branches of the Church
locally enjoy good relationships and that is why we signed our Covenant to work
together as individuals as well as leaders.
Sadly, Pentecost will be Robert’s last official service in the village as Vicar. So,
on behalf of all the local Christians, I would like to thank him for his huge
contribution to our combined worship and also to our planning meetings and our
joint ventures such as the Lent talks. I know the village and the surrounding area
will also miss him. We wish him and Rosemary a long, healthy and happy
retirement.
Yours in the service of Christ,
