Positive Happenings at First Lutheran
Taking the idea that we need to accentuate the positive, Dom Colafati thought it would be helpful to share these two photos.
The first is from the community dinner held on Monday, February 22nd. There is a real liveliness in the air, with a great mix of people from our church, the neighborhood, and the UAlbany college community.
The second is from Sunday school on February 21st. It is a "full house," certainly compared to the last 15 years or so (and we were missing at least three regulars). Good signs!

Bowling For Beds
The Bowling For Beds Bowl-A-Thon, sponsored by U-Albany's Cornerstone Ministry, was held at Sunset Bowling Lanes on Saturday, January 30th. A total of $9,573.88 was collected to benefit the Emergency Overflow Shelter, housed in our building.
Four of our members bowled in this event. Our crack bowling team included Cliff Danielson, Carol Engelhardt, Joe Markowski and Sandy O'Connor. Thanks to the bowlers who gave their time and all those who donated to this worthy cause. First Lutheran raised $595!
Damien Center Dinner Janice Logan - Social Ministry Chair
The Lutheran Cluster churches once again sponsored
the February Damien Center dinner. This year the dinner was held on Saturday, February 27th at our site.
I want to thank Kim Ryan, Kim Paonessa, Carol Engelhardt, JoAnne Evans, Beverly Hazzard and Sandy O'Connor for making lasagna for the dinner. Thank you to the Sunday School students and parents for making the favors for the dinner.
A special thanks is given to Liz Peters and Clara DeMarco for helping to organize and work at the dinner and to Alex Nagy for taking care of anything we needed (as always).

March 2016
Dear First Family, I have just been working ahead. To get everything ready for a worship service, coordinating with organist, choir, and secretary, I plan for an entire season ahead of time. That is why today during the first week of Lent, I have been working on worship planning for Easter. And I am excited about my plans. In fact, I am so excited that racing through my head came the thought, “Oh, I wish we could just skip Lent.”
But we can’t skip Lent. We dare not skip Lent. There can be no resurrection without the tomb. There can be no
tomb without the cross. There can be no cross without the arrest. There can be no arrest without going to Jerusalem for the Passover. There can be no Jerusalem without Jesus’ step by step Journey to get there. Jesus began that Journey in the wilderness, facing down Satan, with the steadfastness of God’s holy purpose. Each step in the Journey is necessary. We dare not skip any.
That’s why this next month is so important. We will continue that Journey together in worship. We will live
through the events that lead to Jesus’ death and, through Jesus’ death, to the resurrection. It is a rich journey, a life-enriching journey. I hope you will take notice of this Journey as you go about your busy days. And I pray that this Journey will lead you into deeper relationship with the one who was both crucified and raised.
I offer you two thought-provoking prayers excerpted from a collection of Walter Brueggemann’s prayers, Awed
to Heaven Rooted in Earth (153-4). May these prayers enrich your Lenten journey.
In Peace & Joy! Pastor Allie

Loss is indeed our gain The pushing and the shoving of the world is endless. We are pushed and shoved. And we do our fair of pushing and shoving in our great anxiety. And in the middle of that you have set down your beloved suffering son who was like a sheep led to slaughter who opened not his mouth. We seem not able, so we ask you to create spaces in our life where we may ponder his suffering and your summons for us to suffer with him, suspecting that suffering is the only way to come to newness So we pray for your church in these Lenten days, when we are driven to denial — not to notice the suffering, not to engage it, not to acknowledge it. So be that way of truth among us that we should not deceive ourselves. That we shall see that loss is indeed our gain. We give you thanks for that mystery from which we live. Amen
Revise our taking You, you giver! You have given light and life to the world; You have given freedom from Pharaoh to your people Israel; You have given your only Son for the sake of the world; You have given yourself to us; You have given and forgiven, and you remember our sins no more. And we, in response, are takers: We take eagerly what you give us; we take from our neighbors near at hand as is acceptable; we take from our unseen neighbors greedily and acquisitively; we take from our weak neighbors thoughtlessly; we take all that we can lay our hands on. It dawns on us that our taking does not match your giving. In this Lenten season revise our taking, that it may be grateful and disciplined, even as you give in ways generous and overwhelming. Amen

Souper Bowl 2016 was super!
The FLC Souper Bowl began at 11 am on February 7th with our Sunday School families heading up the event.
Using large soup pots the Sunday School children received
$218.90 in donations from worshippers at First Lutheran. Added to this was $185.80 from previous Sunday School offerings. Checks of $202.35 were sent to the Sister Maureen Joyce Soup Kitchen and to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. Thank you to all who contributed.
As well, our thanks goes to those who brought in crocks of
soup - 10 altogether! Delicious soups, bread, and yummy desserts made for satisfied bellies. Added to the meal was the nice community shared around the tables while we ate.
The hungry were well fed in numerous ways at the FLC
Souper Bowl.
FLC Community Dinners
The First Lutheran Church continues to provide a monthly dinner for members of our church, as well as friends and local community members. When we first began this outreach venture, our number of guests ranged from 31 to 108, averaging about 60 people in the first year. In the last 9 months our average has increased to 109 people per meal. From community member feedback, these dinners, the free produce and clothes given out at the end of the meals are much appreciated.
As wonderful as these dinners have been for our
community, they require a significant amount of work, all provided by volunteers. At this time, we especially need people to plan and prepare the dinners for April and May. (Please sign up for this on the sheet on the bulletin board across from Pastor's office.) People are needed to distribute information flyers in the neighborhood, plan and prepare the meal, help set up, serve and clean up the dinner, and aid with the dispensing of produce and clothing. If you are able to help with any of these tasks, please contact Janice Logan (437-1121). Many hands make light work. We also invite you to simply attend any of our dinners and partake of the good food and conversation with our neighbors. Our next dinner is Tuesday, March 29th, at 6:00 (note the changed day)

First Lutheran Council Meeting February 9, 2016 Highlights
Consolidation Committee members from First are:
Governance: Sandy O’Connor, Peter Christoph, Barb McGuinness
Building: Sandy O’Connor, Janice Logan, Colin McKnight, Lisa Rittberger (as needed).
Staff/Finance: Tim Eskeli, Judy Carlson, Doug Siegenthaler, Kim Paonessa
First is in need of volunteers/leaders for the many of activities and duties needed for our Church mission: council members, coffee hour, altar guild, Community dinner, choir, counters, ushers… Sheets to sign up are outside Hartwick Lounge (where coffee hour is held). Please sign up.
Internal Audit: a committee is being set up to do our internal audit.
Alex was hurt on the job. His injury was treated and seems to have been resolved.
Treasurer’s Report: The end of the year report is not finished at this time, but we expect it will be in the next couple of weeks. Year-end expenses were higher than expected so we authorized Morgan Stanley to sell stock to cover them. Cash flow continues to be a problem as weekly giving is down (as indicated in the 2016 budget) but expenses remain the same. We will continue to monitor the situation and plan to meet with Morgan Stanley in the spring (if necessary) to come up with a plan to generate more cash.
Finance: Once the year-end report is finished, this will be made available to the congregation. Then financial reports, with the year-to-date expenses, will be available quarterly to the congregation.
Personnel: There will be a change in the building use policy. Building usage on Friday and Saturday will be limited to First, Damien Center, and the Council of Churches

TIE DYE and PEACE SYMBOLS are back! Your Upstate NY Synod World Hunger Team invites you to participate in the 17th annual appeal June 5-7 at the Synod Assembly in Rochester. The theme of this year’s campaign is GOD’S PEACE, YOUR PIECE.
We long for world peace, yet we are bombarded daily
with news of escalating conflict and violence. What can we do? Some say a world without hunger would be a world at peace. True or not, a world without hunger is a goal worth pursuing. ELCA World Hunger provides help and hope for millions of people in the U.S. and worldwide. You are part of that effort.
Still, many of our neighbors around the world and in
our local communities lack the basic necessities of life―nutritious food, clean water, adequate shelter, access to health care, and opportunities for quality education and employment.
We hope you will participate in this special synod-
wide appeal to raise a total of $45,000 to address these needs. In order to accomplish the goal, each congregation is challenged to contribute at least $450.
Your piece (prayers, gifts, and action) will increase
awareness and provide much needed funding for:
Domestic Hunger Grants for congregations/organizations working to alleviate hunger in the Upstate New York Synod and across the U.S.
Development projects around the world helping
people help themselves through training and assistance
Emergency relief in times of disaster Education and advocacy to address systemic
causes of hunger and poverty. SO . . . dig out your 60’s fashions and join us at the assembly. We’ll be waiting for YOU at the hunger table!

Wednesday Lenten Soup Supper
Every Wednesday during Lent, one of the Albany Cluster churches is hosting the midweek service. Prior to each 7:00 service, a soup supper will be offered. Moments of Music has been planned for those with a love of music and a love for Scripture as a special opportunity during Holy Week. This time of quiet meditation will bring music and the message of Lent to life for us! Starting with a setting of “The King of Love My Shepherd Is,” this musical journey leads us through a setting of Psalm 23 by Howells, an arrangement of “It Is Well With My Soul,” chorales of Bach and Brahms, and concluding with Lutheran composer, David Cherwien’s “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty.” Won’t you join us for this beautiful noon-time ‘moment of music?’
