The Father and the SonJohn 14:8-14

John 13:33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’

John 13:36-38Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

SproulI am the way because I am the truth and because I am the life. I am the way to the Father because I am the true manifestation or revelation of the Father. I am the way to the Father because I alone have the power of eternal life.

TenneyWithout the way there is no going, without the truth there is no knowing, without the life there is no living.

Simeon…they could not conceive aright of his divine character. Sometimes, indeed, they spake well respecting it: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God:” but, at other times, they shewed that their judgment respecting it was very wavering and ill-informed.

Where Are You Going?

III. By Jesus the Father is petitioned,

John 14:8-9Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 1:14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:18No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

Ephesians 4:18They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.

Simeon And this brought from our blessed

Lord an answer, which is of the greatest importance to the Church

in all ages, inasmuch as it establishes the doctrine of the

divinity of Christ beyond all contradiction.

John 14:9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Matthew 11:27All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

John 12:45And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.

John 14:7If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.

Hebrews 1:3He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high

Philip is blind to the light.

Jesus is light to the blind.

Matthew 7:11If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

1 John 3:1See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

John 14:10-11Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

There is nothing un-Jesus-like in the heart of the Father.

John 10:38 …but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”

Ryle How little we realize the fullness of the expression, ‘The Father dwelleth in Me.’

Believe Jesus…• …because of His character

• …because His words are the Father’s

• …because the miracles reveal God’s working through Him

John 5:36For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me.

Romans 14:1As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.

John 14:12Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

Luke 10:17The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!”

Luke 10:20Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
