Photosynthesisproducedlargequantitiesofoxygenandremovedmuchcarbondioxidefromtheatmosphereoncelifeevolvedby3.5b.y.About3b.y.bandedironformations(BIFs)showthatfreeoxygenwasavailableperiodically,perhapsseasonally,tooxidizeandprecipitatetheabundantironcationsthatweredissolvedinoceanwater(remembertheseironcationsweretheproductofcarbonicacidweatheringsilicaterocks)

About2-1.7b.y.redbeds(hematite-cementedsandstonesandshales)startedtoform,indicatingacontinuoussupplyoffreeoxygen

About2-1.7b.y.carbonaterocks/limestonesandothercarbonaterocksbecamecommonindicatingthatoxygenhadincreasedandcarbondioxidereducedthroughphotosynthesissothatoceanacidityhaddecreasedenoughtoallowcalciumcarbonatetoprecipitate.

BandedIronFormationsaresedimentaryrocksthathavealternatinglayersofiron-richmineralsandafine-grainedsilicarockcalledchert.
