THOUGHTS ABOUT HALLOWEEN
All Hallows Eve - the eve before All Hallows
Day (All Saints Day) - has come to be known
as Halloween. In an ironic twist, many people
who don’t know about or think about All
Saints Day are certain to remember Hallow-
een.
Some people become fearful that we
over-emphasize dark spirits or frightening fig-
ures like Freddy, Michael, or Jason (testing
your knowledge of scary movies). For others,
the zombie crawl or fake front-yard cemeter-
ies are all part of the fun.
The history of this day has always al-
lowed people to dress up in costumes and
poke fun at precisely that which we fear. (No
wonder over the years that various masks of
presidents have been popular!)
And then there is beggars’ night. For a
number of years one family in town allowed
me to walk with Dad and the kids as they
went door to door. My reward was one
piece of candy from each of the kids’ stash.
Enjoy the day but just keep your per-
spective that it is all about fun and not much
more.
ALL SAINTS DAY MONDAY
All Saints Day, one of the holy days of the Catholic
Church, will be on Monday, November 1. When a
holy day lands on a Monday or Saturday, because
of its proximity to Sunday, it is not observed as a
day obligation. We will celebrate All Saints Day
Mass at 9:00 a.m., Monday.
ALL SOULS MASS NOVEMBER 2
Here at St. John XXIII we have an annual All Souls Mass
when we especially remember the deceased members of
the families of our parish. Their names will be read aloud.
All others in the parish are also invited to this Mass as
well. We want to remember all who have been part of our
lives and celebrate what we refer to as the Communion of
Saints to which we all belong.
The Mass will be at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 2.

Pastor’s Note: SAINTS AND SOULS
I love the week we are in, and not especially
because of Halloween!
I’m okay with Halloween, but I find myself
laughing how what used to be a kids’ day has be-
come an excuse for adults to dress up and play
‘pretend.’ Maybe our society needs more levity.
What I am really writing about, however, is
the next two days: All Saints (November 1) and All
Souls (November 2).
All Saints Day is a holy day when we honor all
holy men, women, and children. Some are canon-
ized and are Saints with a capital “S” while others
lived a saintly life and are holy in every sense of the
word. We honor them. We use them as models for
living. And we seek their intercession in prayer just
as we ask those around us to pray with us for some-
thing important. If they are close to God, why not
ask them to pray with us.
All Souls Day is a reminder that all who have
gone before us are still part of our lives. The church
has always had a special way to remember those
who have passed. And our church truly believes
that we can pray for the deceased that God will
continue their journey into eternal Love.
All in all, what we are talking about is a doc-
trine of the Catholic Church called the Communion
of Saints. I have realized over the years just how im-
portant this doctrine is. Our relationship with the
Lord transcends death. If we can be with the Lord
on this side of death, and our loved ones with the
Lord on the other side of death, and since there is
only ONE LORD, we remain connected with those
who have died through the goodness of the Lord!
Take the time to remember deceased loved
ones. But also celebrate their lives and the good-
ness that lives on because they have been part of
our lives.

EARLY MORNING AT ST JOHN XXIII
The mist is rising from the front pond before
daybreak on Sunday, October 24. The light in the
fountain in the center of the pond sheds its light
and provides a mystical scene for cars passing by
on Dixie Highway.
Light overcomes darkness.
SACRIFICIAL COMMITMENT
Our Sacrificial Giving report from last week is
$19,148. Thank you.
Our parish is financially solvent because of the
on-going contributions of people like you. Thank
you. The collection is our primary source of income
each week, and it funds our staff, all our buildings
upkeep, and the many other ways we help keep
church alive.
YELLOW ENVELOPES
Thank you to those who turned in a yellow
“Propagation of the Faith” envelop last week.
Thank you for helping the missionary work of the
church.
These envelopes remain present in the
pews this week, so you can still use one if you
misplaced the one from last week. Please help us
fund the efforts of our foreign missions around the
world. Thank you.

BLOOD DRIVE RESULTS
On behalf of the American Red Cross and the Knights of Columbus Council 14502, Thank You to everyone
who participated in the blood drive held on October 16. We collected 50 units of blood at this drive. This is
the first time we have had a blood drive in the fourth quarter of the year, so these 50 units were a true plus to
our total for the year. Our next drive is scheduled for Wednesday, January 5, 2022. This drive will include the
return of our very popular Knights of Columbus Chili Cook-Off. All donors will be invited to sample several ver-
sions of Chili, all created by members of the Knight of Columbus Council 14502. They can then vote for their
favorite. This drive is now open for scheduling at www.redcrossblood.org. Use the sponsor code KOFCPERRYS-
BURG. This drive always fills up, so scheduling early will assure the best selection of appointment times.
