THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW : IMPACT OF GLOBAL WARMING ON SOCIETY

Global warming refers to a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.

INTRODUCTION

1. Since 1971, 90% of the warming has occurred in the oceans.

2.  Since the early 20th century, the global air and sea surface temperature has increased about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F).

3.  Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth's surface than any preceding decade since 1850.

HISTORY OF GLOBAL WARMING

Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning power plants.

Carbon dioxide emissions from burning gasoline for transportation.

Methane emissions from animals, agriculture such as rice paddies, and from Arctic seabeds.

Deforestation , especially tropical forests for wood, pulp, and farmland.

Increase in usage of chemical fertilizers on croplands.

CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING

1. Greenhouse is a glass house for keeping plants.

2. It absorbs heat but doesnot radiate it back to the atmosphere.

3. greenhouse gases plays the same role.

4. Global warming takes place when these greenhouse gases accumulate in the atmosphere which makes the average temperature on Earth warmer.

CLIMATIC CHANGESPHYSICAL IMPACTSSOCIAL IMPACTSEcological changes

EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

Rise in temperature.

Increase in humidity .

Ueven distribution of rainfall.

Creation of lowpressure zone resulting in storms & cyclones.

CLIMATIC CHANGES

DROUGHT CAUSED CRACK ON LAND

Floods & drought. Inrease in sealevel.

Melting of glaciers & polar icecaps.

Submergence of islands & nearby coastal areas.

PHYSICAL IMPACTS

Melting of polar icecaps

Crop failure. Water scarcity. Migration & conflict

for survival for all living beings including humans & cattle.

SOCIAL IMPACTS

Impact on biological systems.

Disturbance of foodchain & food web.

Increase of endangered species.

Extinction of species.

ECOLOGICAL IMPACTS

Polarbears becoming endangerd

GRAPH OF GLOBAL WARMING

GRAPH SHOWING RISE IN CARBONDIOXIDE EMISSIONS & RISE IN TEMPERATURE

Global warming has many adverse effects , so it can be controlled in the following way :-

Afforestation.Avoid burning of fossil fuels.Use alterative sources of energy like wind , tidal etc .
