THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
DECEMBER 16, 2018 The prophetic writings we hear in today’s scriptures call us to rejoice and celebrate the goodness of God. Zephaniah, Isaiah, Saint Paul, and John
the Baptist in Luke’s Gospel all follow the rich tradition of the Biblical prophets, a tradition that reaches full expression in Jesus. The prophets warn that human failings have truly disastrous consequences. All are summoned to repent, and to change their lives. Today we hear the Good News that God’s gracious love exceeds and overcomes all human corruption. God has not given up on us. Indeed, God keeps pursuing us, and eagerly seeks to reconcile with us. God’s initiative to set the world aright culminates with Jesus, whose coming John the Baptist announces. John’s prophetic message summons us to join in God’s reconciling work, by living generously and justly in our daily lives. As we rejoice in God’s grace, we then extend this grace to all.
BEGIN WHERE YOU ARE In today’s Gospel, those who listened to John the Baptist’s prophetic preaching were quite troubled, and moved to ask “What should we do?”
Although John had given dire warnings about what might happen if they did not sincerely repent, he did not suggest drastic actions. He recommended that people begin where they are, and work within their daily circumstances. Share generously. Treat people fairly. Be content with what you have. These were perhaps small steps turning them, in God’s time, toward deeper change.
A first step for us might be to learn, however slowly, to listen to God speaking within the context of our lives. We can respond with small concrete actions and perhaps learn what God wishes to say through them. We can then listen anew for the next step.
Today’s Readings: Zep 3:14–18a; Is 12:2–3, 4, 5–6; Phil 4:4–7; Lk 3:10–18(Worship Pgs.1009)

Third Sunday of Advent Page Three As we close in on our celebration of Advent, have you noticed how God came to us in “Littleness” on the first Christmas?
I suspect if we want to hear Jesus this Christmas, we have to know that he is with us in our “littleness and quiet.” Are we giving Him time? Let us listen! Renew and Rebuild: We are moving forward slowly and surely on the School roof project. Given the slowing of the Renew and Rebuild pledges, we will have to move on the Shrine Church project when we consolidate the appropriate funds. Peace, Prayer, & Gratitude, Fr. Jerry
BAPTISMS: First and Fourth Sundays of the month at 2:00 PM. Instructions for parents of children to be Baptized must be arranged with the Priests of the Parish. Only instructed Catholics should be invited as Godparents. A copy of the child’s birth certificate and sponsor certificates for the Godparents are required when you meet with the priest. CONFESSIONS: Saturday afternoon 4:30 - 5:30 PM in the Shrine Church. MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least six months before the marriage takes place. SICK CALLS: Any time. Do not neglect to call a priest to a person seriously ill (while the person is conscious, if possible).
NOCTURNAL ADORATION: Each First Friday 7:00pm until 8:00pm in the Shrine Church. NOVENAS:.To St. Anthony: Tuesdays after the 9AM Mass; Miraculous Medal: Monday at 8PM in the Shrine Church. HOLY HOUR - EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT, BENEDICTION: on Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00pm in the Shrine Church. SHRINE TO THE UNBORN AT ST. ANTHONY’S - A Shrine to the Unborn is installed in St. Anthony’s Shrine Church. The centerpiece of the shrine is an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. A Book of Life is enshrined there. Those who have suffered the loss of an unborn child, through stillbirth, miscarriage or abortion, or of a child who lived for just a short time, may have his or her name inscribed in the Book. If you wish to have an unborn child included; applications are available at St. Anthony’s Church office 623-2138 between 8:30am & 3:30pm. There is no fee but donations will be received with gratitude.
