BUILDERS AND STEWARDS OF COMMUNITY RESOURCES

OUR HISTORY2005: ACCESS receives funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the C. S. Mott Foundation to develop a program to strengthen philanthropy in the Arab American community.

2006: CAAP conducts the first research ever done on giving in the Arab American community. The results are published in “Insights on Arab American Giving.”

2007: CAAP forms the Professional Advisory Board, a national advisory board of Arab American philanthropists and leaders.

2007: CAAP conducted research with over 18 national philanthropic ethnic organizations, resulting in the decision to develop CAAP into a national Arab American community foundation, not for a geographic area, but for an ethnic community.

OUR HISTORY – CONT.

2008, CAAP begins to engage individual donors in community grantmaking both within and beyond the Arab American community. CAAP receives funding from the Ford Foundation for institution building activities. CAAP also receives a challenge grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. With this funding, CAAP launches the first Request for Proposals for Arab American community organizations.

2009, CAAP awards $73,900 to 16 Arab American organizations across the U.S. in its first round of grantmaking. Additionally, CAAP begins housing individual donor-advised funds with the support of the matching opportunity from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

IMPACTING CHANGE THROUGH GRANTMAKING

Through our community grantmaking, CAAP strengthens Arab American nonprofit organizations to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities

Since 2009, CAAP has completed four rounds of community grantmaking, providing a total of $232,900 in grants to Arab American organizations across the country

TEEN GRANTMAKING INITIATIVE

In 2011, CAAP launched the Teen Grantmaking Initiative (TGI), a group of 20 high school students who gather “To make a difference in our community through grantmaking and community service.” The teens completed their first round of grantmaking in spring 2012, awarding $4,600 to 12 metro-Detroit nonprofits in support of youth-led programs. TGI was honored in 2012 with the prestigious Sparky Anderson Award for Outstanding Youth Philanthropy from the Association of Fundraising Professionals-Detroit Chapter. TGI plans to expand nationally with several new chapters in the coming years. A TGI-New York chapter will pilot in fall 2013.

DISASTER RELIEFIn spring 2012, CAAP established a disaster relief fund to provide emergency aid to victims of natural and man-made disasters throughout the world.

In fall 2012, CAAP granted over $65,000 to 5 humanitarian relief organizations providing aid to thousands of Syrian refugees.

$1 MILLION GRANTMAKING BENCHMARK

In February 2013, CAAP reached a major benchmark: $1 million in grants through our community grantmaking, donor-advised funds, disaster relief, and Teen Grantmaking Initiative

…and one endowed operational fund that was formed in 2012. All four of our endowed funds have total combined assets of more than $140,000.
