Fall Break Coming Soon: October 8&9
This week the Hornet Spotlight has shined on another exceedingly
talented hornet, Brett Bailey. Brett is a sophomore at PHS, where
he maintains his spot as one of the top students in his grade. He
currently takes all AP and Honor classes, where he strives to
make the best grades possible. Brett is a strong member of the
cross country and track teams, where he runs the 800, 1 mile, and
2 mile events. He is also a current member of the PHS Marching
Hornets where he plays trumpet. Brett was inducted into the Beta
Club on September 20th, and is eager to begin helping his commu-
nity. The future looks very promising for
this hornet. Congratulations for being
chosen as the Hornet Spotlight! –By
Jessie Adams and Wakeelah McIntyre.

Mr. David Todd is the 2012-2013 PHS Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Todd, who teaches math, has been teaching at PHS for
24 years. He and his wife have been married for 25 years,
and they have four children (all girls) ages 21, 19, 14,
and11. When asked why he decided to become a teacher, he
said, “I got into teaching to support my family. I stayed in
teaching because I enjoy it.” Mr. Todd engages students in
his classes by teaching them in exciting ways that students
will understand. He really enjoys watching students learn
what they feel is impossible. While teaching these students,
Mr. Todd not only teaches them mathematics, but he advises
them to surround themselves with friends who have good
morals and encourages them to utilize their educational
opportunity. Mr. Todd says, “I know that students can put
teachers in a terrible mood at times. I am no exception. How-
ever, being around students usually improves my mood. Also,
the mood that a person is in is his own choice. I feel most
people who are in a bad mood, choose to be.” When asked if
he was surprised that he is Teacher of the Year, Mr. Todd
responded, “Yes. I was very surprised, especially when I
consider teachers here at PHS who are more deserving.” The
Buzz congratulates Mr. David Todd for being selected 2012-
13 PHS Teacher of the Year. –By Harlee Moates & Casandra

Tips for Taking the Oct. 3rd Writing Test
Saturday, September 22, 2012, the Semi-
noles of Florida State University took on
the Clemson Tigers and dominated on their
home turf. In the first and second quarters
Florida State fans were gripping their seats
at the anticipation of the score. Florida
State fell behind before the half, and during
half time, silence fell over the FSU fans.
Going into halftime the score was 21-14,
Clemson. During the halftime show, Clem-
son fans were excited by the scoreboard
and showed their school spirit cheering on
their school band. Meanwhile in the Florida
State locker room, E.J. Manuel rallied his
team to get the win. After halftime, Florida
State made a comeback. It was like they
were finally
settled down
and focused
on their main
goal, which
was to defeat the Clemson Tigers. E.J
Manuel made some impressive passes to
Chris Thompson which resulted in three
touchdowns bringing FSU to the lead.
Clemson made one final touchdown in the
second half. The ending score was 49-37,
FSU. This game proved the dominance that
the Florida State football team has. Go

The Buzz sends regrets its
errors in the coverage of the
“2012 PHS Presidential
Election” in last week’s
paper. The writers inadvert-
ently misrepresented the
views of the Democratic and
Republican parties. The
article should have stated
that the Democrats believe
people should have a voice
about the gender of whom
they want to marry and
whether they want to have
abortions or not. Mr. Hill’s
class, the Democrats, la-
beled themselves as Pro-
Choice. Coach Sirmon’s
class, the Republicans,
believe that marriage should
be between a man and a
woman, as well as no wom-
an should be able to get an
abortion. They feel as
though abortion is taking
someone’s life. The mock
President of PHS was Re-
publican, Steven Freeman

ball, Steven Freeman was
immediately sworn in. –By

Two Moultrie teens were killed in a tragic
accident Saturday, September 22, 2012. The
Colquitt County Coroner said Mary Holt
Statom and Madison Sumner, both 16, were
killed instantly when their car ran off the road
and struck a tree around 1:30 p.m. The Coro-
ner said the car ran off the road as it went
around a curve. The driver, Mary Holt Statom,
lost control and the car went down a sloping
ditch before striking a tree. This is the second
fatality on this road within two months. PHS
guidance counselor, Mrs. Megahee, went to
Colquitt County High School Monday to help
with grief counseling for the students, faculty,
and staff. Everyone should keep the friends
and family of these two young girls in your
thoughts and prayers. –By Lexi Gilliard

Cross Country
Hornet Football
On Saturday, September 22, 2012, the nest’s very own PHS cross country
team competed in the Bearcat Invitational. This meet took place in Bainbridge
at 9:30 A.M. The high school girls’ team ran first, and was delighted at the
semi-cool weather. The girls ran hard, and many got their best times in; after
the girls ran, it was time for the boys. They did not have the cool weather the
girls had, but they all brought their A-game and were prepared for the hot sun.
The team was satisfied with the course, and appreciated the shaded woods;
however, they did not like the large hills, twists, and turns. At the end of the
meet, all of the team’s blood, sweat, and tears seemed worth it. Almost every
member of the team ran his/her best time of the season, and five members ran
their best times ever. Both the PHS boys’ and girls’ teams placed 2nd for their
region and are working hard for first. The team traveled to Albany on Thurs-
day and Pebble Hill in Thomasville on Saturday. Everyone is extremely proud
of the Hornet athletes from the nest. Good Luck Hornets! – By Cheyenne

On September 21, 2012, the Hornets traveled to Donalsonville to take on the Semi-
nole County Indians. This would be the last game before the Hornets start region
play. The Hornets started off on the offensive side of the ball and went down the
field and scored in 12 plays on a pass from Clarence Almond to Desmond Parker,
putting the Hornets up 6-0. The Indians drove down the field, and it took them 11
plays to score, tying the game at 6-6 for the rest of the first half of the game. On the
first drive of the second half, the Hornets’ de-
fense was up, and the Indians went down the field
and scored, making the score 13-6. Then the
offense had a chance to even the score up when
in the middle of the drive, Clarence Almond
threw an interception, giving the Indians a
chance to further their lead. The Indians took advantage of this opportunity and
scored making it 20-6. The Hornets’ offense made the next drive count and went
down the field and scored, shortening the Indians lead 20-13. For the rest of the
game the Hornet defense shut down the Indian offense giving the Hornet offense
four times to even the score. The last drive of the game the offense was moving the
ball great, when unfortunately, Clarence Almond threw a second interception end-
ing all hope of a Hornet victory. This week the
Hornets start region play and go after their goal
of making the play-offs this year. Their opponent
will be the Fitzgerald Hurricanes, so come out
and support the Hornets at home. Go Hornets! –
