The warm up pattern• Each person (stitch) Line up along the
‘needle’• Say your name & **throw the ball (wool)
and catch it then answer one of the questions/statements on the ball
• Hand the ball (wool) to the next person on your left
• Then move across to the other ‘needle’• Once everyone is on the right ‘needle’
everyone move back across to the left ‘needle’ & Repeat from **

How it all began…• Knitting originated in Egypt where socks

• Spread through to Europe • Elizabethan knitting schools were set up in

• World War I an II – make do and mend• 1980s reduced popularity of hand knitting• And now… knitting is back as a hobby

Making a stitch …an experiment
With a needle in each hand the stitches will go from the left hand needle to the right
Instructions:• Right needle in through stitch left to right• Wool in right hand round needle• Right needle pull down hooking stitch• Pull stitch off left needle onto right

Knitting therapyKnitting was used as part of Occupational Therapy during WWI with wounded men
Conference on Therapeutic Knitting‘Knitting to Facilitate Change’ held at Bath’s Royal Scientific and Literary Institution June 2012.
• Looking at the benefits of knitting to manage symptoms and emotions though changes in social and behaviour
• Knitting groups to tackle loneliness and isolation • educating, supporting, monitoring and motivating people over the
longer-term at low cost in way which doesn’t focus on negative isues• addicts could use knitting as a self-soothing tool for the management of
emotions, stress and anxiety to enable them to partake in group activity • ‘take home’ tool linked to the group,• Can be used to help manage pain, help sufferers with Dementia or
mental health problems
