The Ascension of the Lord
Sunday, May 16, 2021
Stewards of God’s Gifts

ACENSION OF THE LORD
At the end of His earthly life
Jesus ascends triumphantly
into heaven. The Church ac-
claims Him in His holy humani-
ty, invited to sit on the Father's
right hand and to share His
glory. But Christ's Ascension is
the pledge of our own. Filled
with an immense hope, the
Church looks up towards her
leader, who precedes her into
the heavenly home and takes
her with Him in His own per-
son: "for the Son of God, a&er
incorpora'ng in Himself those
whom the devil's jealousy had
banished from the earthly par-
adise, ascends again to His Father and takes them with Him"
(St. Leo).
Look up to heaven today. See Christ ascending to his Father and our
Father. Say: Thank you, God, for creang me, and for giving me,
through the Incarnaon of your beloved Son, the possibility and the
assurance that if I do my part here, when death comes it will not be
an enemy but a friend, to speed me on my way to the true, supernat-
ural life which you have, in your love, planned and prepared for me.

WHAT IS RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, or
RCIA, is a communal process for formal
initiation of new members into the Catholic
Church.
RCIA is a process of study, exploration, faith
sharing, and faith formation with specific
liturgical rites for seekers and inquirers. As
they become more certain of the teachings of
the Catholic faith, they decide for themselves
to continue their journey to the Sacraments.

HOW DO I START?

Go to our website:
cathedralsacramento.org/rcia
I came into RCIA as a
baptized Catholic, my family
tends to have sacraments done early in the ages
around 10-15 although I was one of the ones to do
it a bit later. I am very appreciative of this path the Lord has
led me to, because I feel the importance of the sacraments. In
comparison at a young age I think I would’ve not felt the real
importance behind it. Now I cherish this moment we went
through very much and is something I will never forget.

PASTOR’S CORNER
Page 4|Sunday, May 16, 2021|Ascension of the Lord
Today is the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. What Jesus had
alluded to in many of his parables about a leader or king leaving on a
trip to return someday is now a reality in Jesus ascending to heaven and
returning someday. In these “ascension” parables, the concern was al-
ways about how the servants would behave while the king was away.
Would they mistreat one another? Would they use the king’s property
for his kingdom or take it for themselves? Would they be prepared for
his return? All these concerns are brought up in the parables, are they
are all concerns about how we are living our lives today. While Jesus as-
cends into heaven leaving behind us, his servants, to look after things,
are we treating each other well, using his gifts for the betterment of his
kingdom, and prepared for when he returns?
Jesus has ascended into heaven and, although his presence through the
Holy Spirit still guides us, we have been placed as stewards to look after
his treasures here. These treasures include the church and sacraments,
as well as the bodily gifts needed to sustain our lives. As we use the
time, talents, and treasures entrusted to us, we fulfill the parables of Je-
sus who placed us in charge until his return in glory. After almost 2000
years since he ascended, the need to preach his message and care for his
treasures is as important as ever. As good stewards, we pray we truly are
prepared and found worthy for when he returns.
Fr. Michael
Out of
compassion for us
he descended
from heaven and
although he
ascended alone,
we also ascend,
because we are
in Him by grace.

ESQUINA DEL PASTOR
Sunday, May 16, 2021|Ascension of the Lord|Page 5
P. Miguel
Por compasión
por nosotros
descendió del cielo y
aunque ascendió
solo, también
ascendimos, porque
estamos en Él por
gracia.
San Agustín

A FAMILY OF FAITH

CREDO: CREO
Este ha sido un año increíble, a
pesar de la pandemia, para que
las familias crezcan en la fe con
la serie Una familia de fe, Año 1.
Hemos crecido en una apreci-
ación más profunda del Credo,
las creencias fundamentales de
nuestra fe, y en el proceso hemos
llegado a comprender el bosque-
jo de nuestra Historia de
Salvación, desde la Creación
hasta Jesús en Su Resurrección.
Si se lo perdió, ofreceremos un
estudio en el hogar durante el
verano para que lo revisen y / o
para otras familias.

dad de llevar Faith al hogar.
CREDO: I BELIEVE
This has been an incredible
year, despite the pandemic, for
families to grow in faith with
the A Family of Faith series,
Year 1. We have grown in a
deeper appreciation of the
Creed—the core beliefs of our
faith—and in the process have
come to understand the outline
of our Salvation History, from
Creation to Jesus in His
Resurrection. If you missed it,
we will be offering a home-
study through the summer for
review and/or for new families.

Please pray for our youth children as
they begin their final preparation for
the Sacraments of Confirmation and

Ore por nuestros jóvenes y niños

final para los sacramentos de la Con-
firmación y la Sagrada Eucaristía.
After His Resurrection, Jesus spent
40 days with His disciples so that
they might come to believe fully
in all that He came to accomplish.
During this time, Christ’s glorified
body was veiled “under the appear-
ance of ordinary humanity” (CCC
659). After 40 days, Christ ascended
into Heaven, and His humanity
entered irreversibly into divine glory.
The story of the Ascension is
recorded in the Gospels, as well as
the first book of Acts. How fitting
that He who “came from the Father”
and entered the world now leaves
the world and goes “back to the Fa-
ther” (John 16:28). Jesus’ Ascension
into eternal glory is our hope and our
promise that we, too, can someday
go where He has gone. Christ is not
just one of the many ways we can to
go there—He is the only Way. He
told us, “No one comes to the Fa-
ther except through me” (John 14:6).
Christ is the only intercessor
between God and man.
camino. Él nos dijo, “Nadie va al Padre
sino por mí” (Juan 14, 6). Cristo es el
único intercesor entre Dios y el
hombre.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP
- RECOGNIZE GOD
IN YOUR ORDINARY MO-
MENTS
Why Are We Looking at the
Sky?
Men of Galilee — why are you
looking at the sky? It seems like
a pretty foolish question for the
angels to be asking the disciples.
Their best friend just flew away
in a cloud. I think in that situa-
tion, my first reaction would
probably be to stop and stare,
too.
But let’s not forget, the disciples
had a lot of work to do. A world
full of souls to evangelize. I’ve
always been a little amused at
the thought of the angels shoot-
ing them down from Mount
Olivet. Get to work! The king-
dom isn’t going to build itself!
In our own faith lives, we often
find ourselves looking at the sky,
don’t we? We’re the faithful,
after all. We have seen Christ.
We have accepted him. We have
given ourselves to him. What more do we need to do?
Perhaps we excessively dwell on the past, or anxiously an-
ticipate the future. Perhaps we can’t move on from a mis-
take we have made, or we are shying away from a chal-
lenge in front of us. We all have our own cloud that has
bewitched us.
But let’s remember, our faith compels action. Once again,
the kingdom isn’t going to build itself. Why are you look-
ing at the sky? The work is here. The hour is at hand. A
good steward is to be mindful of the gift of time. What’s
the mountain you need to climb down? What is the task
God is handing you? For what purpose has God placed
you here, at this very moment in history?
