The Anchor, Misguided youth and his perfect will

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and

secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.

- Hebrews 6:19

where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having

become a high priest forever according to the order of

Melchizedek. – Hebrews 6:20

The Anchor

Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most

Holy Place,Hebrews 9:3

The Anchor

But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and

for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.

Hebrews 9:7

The Anchor

by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,

Hebrews 10:20

The AnchorThe anchor became a key Christian symbol during the period of Roman persecution. As Michael Card observes in his recent album, Soul Anchor: "The first century symbol wasn't the cross; it was the anchor.

The AnchorIf I'm a first century Christian and I'm hiding in the catacombs and three of my best friends have just been thrown to the lions or burned at the stake, or crucified and set ablaze as torches at one of [Emperor] Nero's garden parties, the symbol that most encourages me in my faith is the anchor. When I see it, I'm reminded that Jesus is my anchor."

The AnchorGiven its power, why did the anchor fade from use? Scholars have found only a few examples dating as late as the middle of the third century, and none after 300 A.D.

The AnchorTheir most common explanation is that as the Empire went from persecuting the Church to sponsoring it, Christians no longer needed secret symbols to identify themselves. Constantine's conquering cross replaced the anchor as a source of encouragement to believers in troubled waters.

The Anchor• anchor (plural anchors)• (nautical) A tool used to moor a vessel to the bottom of a sea or river to resist movement.– Formerly a vessel would differentiate amongst the anchors carried as waist anchor, best bower, bower, stream and kedge anchors, depending on purpose and, to a great extent, on mass and size of the anchor

The first is John the Baptist, a Jewish ascetic  who  was  considered  the forerunner  of Jesus Christ.  The second  is  the  apostle  John,  who  is traditionally  regarded  as  the  author of the fourth Gospel and Revelation.

Forerunner a runner at the front or ahead.

LEVITICUS 16:2The LORD said to Moses: "Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he

chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. For I will appear in the

cloud over the atonement cover.

LEVITICUS 16:15"He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull's blood: He shall sprinkle it on

the atonement cover and in front of it.

PSALM 39:7"But now, Lord, what do I look for?

My hope is in you.

PSALM 62:5Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.

ZECHARIAH 9:12Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

Acts 23:6Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, "My brothers, I am a Pharisee, descended from Pharisees. I stand

on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead."

Romans 4:18Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your

offspring be."

Romans 5:4perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Romans 5:5And hope does not put us to shame, because

God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been

given to us.

1 Corinthians 13:13And now these three remain: faith, hope and

love. But the greatest of these is love

1 Peter 1:3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord

Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the

resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

2 Timothy 3:5

Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

2 Timothy 3:6

For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly

women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts

2 Timothy 3:7

Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of

the truth.

2 Timothy 3:8

Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate

concerning the faith.

2 Timothy 3:9

But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also

was.

2 Timothy 3:10

But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of

life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity,

patience,

2 Timothy 3:11

Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at

Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord

delivered me.

2 Timothy 3:12

Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

2 Timothy 3:13

But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and

being deceived.

2 Timothy 3:14

But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been

assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

2 Timothy 3:15

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:16

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2 Timothy 3:17

That the man of God may be perfect, throughly

furnished unto all good works.

his perfect will

It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid

sexual immorality.  1 Thessalonians 4:3

1 Thessalonians 4:3

For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual

immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor

And the LORD has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands.

- Deuteronomy 26:18

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.

- 1 Corinthians 6:19

For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
