THE 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

• The world is so large and contains so many different and unique physical and human characteristics that geographers have organized it into 5 themes to better understand it.

LOCATION

• We use 2 methods to find locations, absolute and relative so we can locate a very specific place

• Absolute-Using latitude & longitude / addresses to find an exact location

• Relative-Using locations as a reference (in relationship to another location) to find a location

LOCATION

Absolute-The White House is located at 38.8977° N, 77.0366° W or at 1600 Pennsylvania NW Avenue, Washington, D.C.,20500

This is an example using an absolute location because we can locate the White House by using a specific coordinate & / or address

LOCATION

Relative-MCMS is located 1 block south of my house (or my house is 1 block north of MCMS)

This is an example using relative location because finding my house’s location is in relation to another to another location (MCMS), or locating MCMS is in relation to where my house is

PLACE

• Identifying how specific locations (places)have very unique / different characteristics than other places-we know we are in a specific place because it has unique / different characteristics than other places

(how places are different)

PLACE

This is an example of a very specific place that has very unique characteristics different than other places - the artic circle is the only place on earth you find these kinds of specific / unique characteristics (the artic & polar bears are only found in one specific place on earth)

HUMAN & ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION

• How humans interact with their environment & natural resources by using or altering it

HUMAN & ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION

• These are examples of how humans interacted with their environment & natural resources by using & / or altering it

MOVEMENT

• How people and goods are moved from one location to another

These are all examples of how people and goods are moved from one location to another

REGION

• Some locations of the world share same / similar specific characteristics-these shared characteristics can be physical, cultural, economic, or other ways (how locations are the same / similar)

REGION

These are examples of locations that share same / similar specific characteristics-Beaches, mountains and deserts all share same / similar physical characteristics↓↓
