Internet of Things in the 5G Era:

Enabling Technologies and

Business Models

Internet of Things• “Interconnect”

• Use Wired (i.e, cabe, fiber-optical, microwave) and/or Wifi to connect smart objects all around the world

Internet of Things• “Relating to”

Internet of Things• Information about things

• “things having identities and virtual personalities”

• IP-enabled embedded devices : sensors (WSNs), machines (M2M), active positioning tags, Radio Frequency Identifiers

(RFID), mobile phones, home and industrial automation equipment, environmental monitoring systems

• smart object: an item equipped with

– a sensor or actuator that gives it the ability to interact with the physical world

– a microprocessor that enables it to transform the data captured from the sensors

– a communication device that enables it to communicate its sensor readings to the outside world and receive input from

other smart objects

– a power source that provides it the electrical energy for the smart object to do its work

• operating in smart spaces and using intelligent interfaces to connect and communicate within social,

environmental, and user contexts

IoT Connectivity Landscape

Wide coverage Low deployment cost High level of security Access to dedicated spectrum Simplicity of managemento NO support for MTC

Low power Low cost Mesh WSN

 BLE

 Short range

LP-

 QoS support Scalable Cost effective

No scalable; No mobility, roaming, SLA support

High reach, low cost LPWA Networks, low data rate

3GPP releases and timeline: toward 5G

6

IoT Return of Investment

7

 Real-time Instrumentation ROI

 Big Data Value ROI

o Shift from infrastructure to data-driven ecosystem

 Wireless ROI

o Substantial CAPEX and OPEX gains

o Save cable costs, installation efforts, system maintenance

Not only utility, BUT also clear financial returns!

Cellular Operator Model

IoT Data Privacy and Trust

• Issue: more vulnerabilities (attacks, privacy leaks), due to integration of heterogeneous technologies

• Requirements:

– Protection of personal data

– Location and data privacy
