President’s Premiership Report
I am delighted to present the President’s Report for 2018 to the
valued members and supporters of the Box Hill Hawks Football
Club. What a year it was with our V.F.L. team winning the
Premiership.
Consistency and the right culture within Clubs is what wins
Premierships. These were the main reasons for the success
that we enjoyed this year and, with the enormous talent within
our playing group, there is good reason to look forward to 2019
with high expectations.
As the old Football saying goes, our 2018 Finals campaign was
truly a “September to remember”; an extra-time victory over
Port Melbourne in the Elimination Final, a one point victory over
Williamstown in the Preliminary Final and; after conceding the
first four goals of the game to a quality opponent in the Casey
Demons, the Box Hill Hawks stormed home in the final quarter
of the Grand Final to win by 10 points. In the process we
became the first Club ever to win the V.F.A./V.F.L. Premiership
after finishing outside the top four on the ladder.
To Chris Newman our Senior Coach, my sincere thanks for
your efforts. You are a fantastic communicator and were able
to instil in each and every player a culture of professionalism
and respect for each other which resulted in the ultimate
success. I’m sure that many Club supporters do not realise
how much time and effort you put into the coaching role. This
hard work has paid off with the words “Premiership Coach” now
deservedly sitting beside your name.
I take this opportunity to thank all players who worked so hard
during the year and contributed to the Box Hill Hawks achieving
the ultimate success. The Club is so proud of each and every
one of you for your dedication to the job and the
professionalism that you showed during the season.
As I have mentioned many times this Club prides itself on
developing young players and I am certain that once again we
have a number in our ranks who will play regular Senior
Football in years to come and may ultimately play in the A.F.L.
I thank the Hawthorn Senior Coach Alastair Clarkson and the
entire Hawthorn Football Department for their encouragement
and professionalism throughout the season. In particular
special mention must go to Graham Wright, Max Bailey and
Marco Bello whose help and advice contributed so much to our
success in 2018.
Special thanks also to Matt Adolf, Ricky Petterd and our fitness
advisor Shaun Dempster. These three gentlemen paid an
important role in our ultimate success and we thank each of
them for contributing so much to us winning the Premiership.
I would also like to thank all Hawthorn listed players who played
for us during the season. You guys were fantastic; your
attitude, enthusiasm and professional approach greatly helped
the Club achieve its goals.
I congratulate all our trophy winners in 2018. In particular our
Captain Andrew Moore who won the Club Champion Trophy; a
great effort from a player who is not only enthusiastic about
playing for the Cub but has the skills required to be dominant at
this level. I also acknowledge the fine season by Will Hams,
Runner-Up Club Champion, who played his heart out every
time he represented the Club.
Special mention must also go to David Mirra who this year
became just the fourth player to play in three Premierships with
the Club – 2010 (Development), 2013 and 2018 (both V.F.L.).
David has been a great player for the Box Hill Hawks and we
congratulate him not only for what he has done for our Club
over the years but the fact that he was drafted by Hawthorn at
the start of 2018 and has now realised his dream to play A.F.L.
Football.
The Box Hill Hawks Football Club continues to receive magnificent support from its alignment partner the Hawthorn Football Club. Our alignment works because of the goodwill and sense of co-operation that has always existed as the different interests within the alignment work together with a common purpose. To the Hawthorn Football Club President Hon. Jeff Kennett OAM, his Board of Directors and C.E.O. Justin Reeves; we are most appreciative for your active and positive interest. I would like to thank all our Club Sponsors. The support we receive from the local business community is magnificent and without your continued help it would be impossible to run this Club as a professional and well resourced organisation. I would also like to thank the City of Whitehorse and its Councillors for your support during the year. Box Hill City Oval is rightly regarded as one of the best grounds in the V.F.L. and the Box Hill Hawks Football Club is proud to represent the City in this prestigious competition. To the Club’s administration led by Daniel Napoli and John Cavarra; I thank you both for your hard work and professional attitude. These two gentlemen have the job of implementing the Board’s policies and both have performed their jobs in an excellent manner. The healthy state of the Club’s Balance Sheet is the culmination of years of hard work and disciplined financial operation. In a competition with a long history of Clubs enduring financial hardship following a vain quest for Premiership glory, to win the flag and record an operating profit is a splendid achievement indeed. I also make special mention of our Football Manager Stewart Ward, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of the Football department. Can I take this opportunity to also thank the tireless work of our match day volunteers who ensure the smooth operation of all facets of Box Hill City Oval at every home game and always with a smile. It is worth noting that our Staff List contains no fewer than 67 names; so for every player that represents the Box Hill Hawks each winter weekend there are three behind the scenes people that all do their bit to contribute to the Club’s success. On behalf of the Board – to each and every one of you – a big “THANK YOU”. A special mention must go to our Vice-Presidents Club and to the members of the Hawthorn Confreres who have supported the Club throughout the year. We really appreciate your contributions and enthusiasm during the year and look forward to each of you continuing to support us for what we hope is to be another successful season in 2019. I am delighted to announce that Ian Dicker and Lorraine Gibbs have been awarded life membership of the Box Hill Hawks Football Club in 2018. Both have been great friends of the Club over many years and each has made an enormous contribution to the Club in a very different way. Both are very worthy recipients of this high honour. It is with much sadness that I acknowledge the recent passing of Lindsay Wilson after a long battle with illness. Lindsay was a great friend to many at the Box Hill Hawks Football Club and a tireless worker for the Club during his entire life. Lindsay, of course, was best known to literally thousands of visitors to City Oval as the match day attendant at the Davey Street gate since the 1970s but was also involved with the Club in a variety of important roles over the years. Like so many members of the Wilson and Gibbs families, Lindsay’s passion for the Box Hill Football Club was quite extraordinary. To Glenda, John and Shane and Lindsay’s extended family; on behalf of all at the Club, I extend my sincere sympathy. Finally, to my fellow Directors. Thank you for your support throughout the year. This year we have achieved the ultimate on-field success this year by winning the Premiership. However our Club and the V.F.L. competition still face many challenges in the future. I’m confident with the expertise on this Board we are in a strong position to embrace the future and write more proud chapters in the history of this great Club.

General Manager’s Report
The 2018 Season was a very successful one with the Box Hill
Hawks winning the V.F.L. Premiership after a fantastic Finals
campaign that included an extra time win against Port
Melbourne, a one point win against Williamstown and a Grand
Final come back against the Casey Demons in front of 15,000
spectators. Just as important was the development of our
players, coaches and staff across the board.
I would like to congratulate all the players, coaches, staff and
volunteers right across our club for their efforts as without the
collective we would not have been able to celebrate such
success.
I would also like to thank the Board of Directors lead by
President Mr. Tony Pinwill and Vice President Mr. Robert Wynd.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my second season working with all of
you and appreciate all your guidance.
The V.F.L. Grand Final win was made all the better after earlier
in the day the Hawthorn Women’s team won their first V.F.L.W.
Premiership. Congratulations to Patrick Hill, his coaches, staff
and the playing group for an outstanding season.
Off the field, our events and fundraising proved to be successful
ensuring the Club can continue to grow and further support our
football program.
Sponsors We are indebted to our long and growing list of sponsors for
their support again in Season 2018 as without them we wouldn’t
have enjoyed our sustained period of on-field success. Over
the past six years; the Club has qualified for four V.F.L. Grand
Finals, winning two of them. Our sponsors keep our Club
strong and stable so a very big “thank you” extends to them all.
Major Sponsors I’d like to begin with our Major Sponsors iiNet and Budget Car
and Truck Rental. On behalf of the entire Club I would like to
thank Paul and Simon Wheelton at Budget Car and Truck
Rental as well as the team from iiNet. We look forward to
working with you again next season.
Coaches Sponsors Audi Centre Doncaster and Audi Penfold Burwood became
our Coaches Sponsors in 2018 and I’d like to thank both Scott
Hannington and Eva Di Medio. We look forward to working with
you both again in 2019.
Platinum Partners Our partnership with Dreamstreet Lending has continued to go
from strength to strength. The Kick for Cash was again a
success with one lucky person walking away with $1,000 cash
on our home match day thanks to Dreamstreet! Thank you to
John Hronis, his wife Poppy, Nicholas Chronis and all the team
at Dreamstreet Lending for your support of the Box Hill Hawks.
Bingo Bins joined the Hawthorn family in 2018 becoming Co-
Major Sponsors of the Hawthorn Women’s team and we’d like
to thank them for their extended support to Box Hill.
Also joining us in 2018 was Burwood HealthCare as Platinum
Sponsors. A big thanks to Peter Demaio and his team for
supporting the Box Hill Hawks!
To Dennis and Maree Dellas at Lindellas First National; thank
you for your long-standing relationship with our Club.
LP Body Works are proud local supporters of our Club and
once again supported many of our events. Sincere thanks once
again to Morry and Mimmo Corvasce.
All sponsors are listed inside the front cover of this Annual
Report and I encourage you to support them whenever
possible.
Vice Presidents Club
To our Vice President’s members, we hope you enjoyed your
season attending the games and events. Thank you for the
support and network that you provide for the Club. We hope to
see you all involved once again as we aim to go back to back
next season.

I’d also like to thank Ian Dicker for his continued support of the
Club and, in particular, the Vice President’s Club.
President’s Luncheons The Club hosted nine Presidents Luncheons in 2018. The
response from sponsors, Vice President’s, members,
supporters and their families was outstanding with an average
attendance of over 80 guests at each luncheon; highlighted by
large attendances of 100 plus at the home games against Port
Melbourne, Essendon and the Casey Demons.
Major Events As well as the President’s Luncheons, we held several non-
match day events including the Season Launch, Mid-Season
Ball and Col Austen Best and Fairest Event.
Hawthorn Football Club President the Honourable Mr Jeff
Kennett was our special guest at the Season Launch held in the
Pavilion Function Centre with players receiving their guernseys
from Senior Coach, Chris Newman.
The Mid Season Ball was a great success held at Encore in St.
Kilda again. A special thanks to our M.C., Anthony “Lehmo”
Lehmann and our guest speakers on the night including Sam
Soliman, Chris Newman, Graham Wright and “Razor” Ray
Chamberlain. I would like to thank all of those that attended the
evening and those that contributed to the night by either bidding
on items or purchasing from our online auction post the event.
As our major fundraiser each year this event is very important
for the Club and we look forward to making it bigger and better
in 2019.
The Col Austen Trophy Night (Best and Fairest Vote Count)
was this season held at the Carlton Brewhouse and, with the
Premiership Cup present, it was a terrific event to cap off the
year. A big congratulations to all our Trophy and Award
winners; particularly our Col Austen Trophy Winner, Andrew
Moore.

This season, Russell Campbell was awarded the Ron Gibbs
Memorial Trophy for his outstanding service to the Box Hill
Hawks Football Club and I’d like to thank Russell for his
commitment to the Club over many years.
Lastly, for the second consecutive year we conducted a
Corporate and Charity Golf Day with Carrington Health. The
event was held at the Box Hill Golf Club with half the money
raised on the day being donated to the Whitehorse Men’s Shed.
We had close to 80 golfers play and the feedback was terrific.
Box Hill City Oval City Oval was kept in fantastic condition by the City of
Whitehorse in 2018 and rightly regarded as one of the best
football venues in suburban Melbourne. The Box Hill Hawks
Football Club extends its gratitude to the Mayor of Whitehorse,
Councillor Andrew Davenport, and all other Councillors for their
ongoing support of our Club. I’d like to thank the C.E.O. of the
City of Whitehorse, Ms. Noelene Duff and all her Officers and
administration for their support. We thank Mark Doyle and all
the ground staff who again produced a magnificent playing
surface throughout the Football season.
Media Special thanks must go to 3WBC for again broadcasting every
Box Hill Hawks match in 2018. A special mention to Paul
Hooper and Neil Butler for their support, not just through their
popular radio broadcasts, but in many areas of the Club’s
activities.
Sean Peter-Budge headed up our Communications team in
2018 and was supported by Matthew Gunn, Kadek Thatcher
and Gabi Keegan to cover media, digital media, marketing and
photography. They all did a fantastic job and allowed our
supporters greater access to our players online and through
social media than ever before. I’d like to congratulate Sean,
who he has accepted a full-time role as Media Coordinator at
Melbourne Victory, and Matthew Gunn, who has accepted a
role at the Collingwood Football Club. We wish them all the
best for the future.
Lastly, a thank you to Channel 7 and the team at McGuire
Media for their coverage in 2018. Their support of the V.F.L.
competition is magnificent. The Box Hill Hawks featured in
seven televised games in 2018, including two home games at
City Oval and three Finals games; and this provided invaluable
exposure for our brand and that of our sponsors.
A.F.L. Victoria A.F.L. Victoria produced another fantastic V.F.L. season and I’d
like to congratulate C.E.O. Steven Reaper and his staff. A big
thank you to John Hook (Competitions Manager), Sam
Sheehan (Talent Operations Coordinator), Meg McArthur
(Talent Operations Coordinator) and Jess Smith (former Talent
Operations Coordinator) for their support of our Club and our
competition.
Hawthorn Football Club The Box Hill Hawks Football Club was again supported so well
by the Hawthorn Football Club and the alignment between the
two Clubs continues to go from strength to strength. There is
great synergy and unity across all areas of our operation
including administration, coaching, medical and conditioning
and we look forward to working on further strengthening the
relationship for years to come.
From the Hawthorn Football Club, I’d like to thank their
President, Hon. Jeff Kennett OAM, for his support of the Club in
2018. It was great to see Jeff at so many of our games. To
Tim Silvers (Chief Operating Officer), Tanya Gallina (General

on your season and thank you for working closely with our V.F.L.
program in season 2018.
Staff and Volunteers We are indebted to the many support staff who played their role
in supporting our players this year. I’d like to thank Stewart
Ward (Football Manager) for his tireless efforts to ensure our
Football program is run professionally.
To John Cavarra (Commercial Operations Coordinator), thank
you again for another season supporting me personally and
providing broader support to the program.
Finally, I would like to thank the many volunteers around the
Box Hill Hawks Football Club for your support across the year.
I’m delighted you were all rewarded with a V.F.L. Premiership
for your efforts. You have all played your part in our success
and it was great to be able to celebrate the Club’s
achievements with you all.

Senior Coach’s Report
The playing group started with a steely resolve entering the
2018 season. With some list changes we managed to retain a
bulk of our senior Box Hill players, who were hungry to make
amends.
The season started very well as we secured the first four wins
of the year. With a strong and healthy Hawthorn list we were
playing up to 18 Hawks listed players any given week. This
gave us the opportunity to blood some first year players
with Changkuoth Jiath, Harry Jones, Liam Mackie, Tom
Maloney, Dylan Moore, Jackson Ross and James Worpel all
playing for the first time in the Box Hill jumper. Half way
through the season we were 6 wins / 5 losses and on the cusp
of seeing ourselves outside the top 8. From there we started to
gel as a young group of Hawthorn and Box Hill listed players
and went on to win all but one of our remaining 7 games.
Our finals campaign certainly was one that will never be
forgotten. Our first game was against a formidable Port
Melbourne on their home ground. Despite controlling a majority
of the first half, it was a miracle play which saw the ball move
from the defensive 50 to the forward 50 in 15 seconds with Ollie
Hanrahan kicking a goal to send us to an 11 point win in
overtime. The next 2 games resulted in a 29 point win against
the Cats and then a memorable one point thriller versus
Williamstown, a game that was again decided by the final kick
of the game.
6 Box Hill Hawks Football Club Ltd – 68th Annual Report 2018 www.boxhillhawks.com.au
The following week we were back in the Grand Final against
Casey. The game itself went in a flash, but in the first half we
looked a shadow of ourselves, which saw Casey play some
tough football that we have come to respect over a long period
of time. Despite this, the second half was ours, in particular the
last quarter; kicking 3.4 to 0.3 to come from 9 points behind at
three-quarter time to claim the Premiership.
I could not be more proud of this group of young men that found
a way to win with unwavering belief in each other and now
share a bond that cannot be broken. Being the 2018 Premiers,
they are etched in history forever.
Despite it being the “players’ game” this success would not
have been possible without the support of so many people
behind the scenes. To Tony Pinwill and the Box Hill Board;
thank you so much for your support for not only myself, but staff
and players. Also to Hon. Jeff Kennett OAM and the Hawthorn
Board for putting their trust in me to fulfil my role as Senior
Coach.
To Daniel Napoli (General Manager), John Cavarra, Stewart
Ward (Football Manager), Sean Dempster and Jack McLean
(Strength and Conditioning Coach) for your hard work and
tireless efforts which have been so valuable to the Club. Thank
you to all our volunteers, trainers, stats team, medical team and
major sponsors for your efforts, sacrifice, dedication and hard
work this season.
To our development team headed up by David Knight along
with David Banfield thank you for the many hours spent at local
games, showing all our players the care they need. To coaches
Matt Adolph, Ricky Petterd, Max Bailey, Marco Bello and Andy
Farrel, I cannot thank you guys enough for all of your hard work
and sacrifice throughout the season. We managed to have
some fun along the way and I have enjoyed every minute.
Lastly I would also like to congratulate our major trophy winners
on an outstanding season. Apologies to anyone I’ve missed,
but thank you; it has been a true honour to be coach of such a
successful and proud Club. Some of my fondest memories
have been here with people I have met and worked with along
the way, so thank you for embracing me into the Box Hill family.
I wish Max Bailey all the best in his first year as Senior Coach.
He is an outstanding individual and I hope he gets the same
amount of enjoyment I had across my two years.

Women’s Team Coach’s Report
Appointed as the inaugural V.F.L.W. coach for the (then) Box
Hill Hawks, I saw our first season result in only three wins,
however, this year, with the new name came a new attitude and
integration into our Club. We saw a whole of business
approach to our program and a strategic list build that would
make us a competitive side, retaining girls who had built a
strong culture and the ability to recruit new talent from the
A.F.L.W.
The season started well with strong wins over Essendon, Casey
and Carlton. We had our first loss for the season against
Collingwood by 7 points and what followed was a run of wins
that held us in good stead before heading into a tough run to
finish the year.
In all games the team was forced to dig deep and when we lost
in round 13 to Darebin we put ourselves in grave danger of
missing September action. The turning point came in round 14
against the Western Bulldogs, winning by 55 points. We
travelled to Darwin to take on the star-studded NT Thunder, a
team that had taken all before them. This trip not only was a
significant win, it created a strong bond between the playing
group and staff. A win against Geelong in round 16 led us to a
top two finish and a double chance at the Grand Final.
Fortunately, that was not required as we breezed past
Collingwood in the semi-final and a fortnight later claimed our
maiden V.F.L.W. Premiership. A season ending with a
Premiership is what we all dream of, however seeing that just
two years into our journey was truly magical.
This amazing journey takes a lot of hard work from many, so
firstly to Tanya Gallina and Rob McCartney, who have been
instrumental in developing a vision and delivering a professional
and integrated women’s program. The support from Hon. Jeff
Kennett OAM and the Hawthorn Board, the executive led by
C.E.O. Justin Reeves, and the entire administration team has
led us to a place we wouldn’t otherwise be.
A big thank you to my loyal band of coaches whose dedication
to developing this team on and off the field has been
extraordinary, and to Briana Harvey, who has supported our
people and managed our program to the highest standard. Our
Head of High Performance, Liv Knowles has professionally led
our strength and conditioning program since its inception, as
well as our medical team that have shown care for player
welfare before all.
Thank you to Paul Sartori, who will be finishing up in his role as
Head of Talent I.D. He has done a wonderful job assisting with
the list build and providing me with coaching support. A big
thank you also to all of our match day and training staff,
coordinated by Alex Nanni.
Congratulations to the entire playing squad who represented
our Club this year and have worked tirelessly since November
2017 to be physically and mentally prepared for the season.
Their professionalism has been outstanding and their ability to
learn, train and implement a complex game style was ultimately
what separated them from the rest. More importantly though,
their character and values brought them together as a team and
they did it the Hawthorn way. These women have changed me
forever and made me a better man.
Lastly to my most import support structure, my family, Jordan
(who brilliantly coordinated stats all year), Tara, and Cody.
They have ridden every bump with me for the last 16 years and
no one deserved to celebrate this year’s success more than
them.
We now look to season 2019 where we will continue to
embrace diversity and fill the stands whenever our women play.
We are the Family Club, let our actions define us.

The Box Hill Hawks Football Club congratulates Tony Pinwill who was awarded life membership of the Victorian Football League in 2018. The following is taken from the Club’s nomination as submitted to A.F.L. Victoria: “Tony’s contribution to the Box Hill Hawks Football Club and by extension to the broader V.F.L. competition and Victorian Football in general has been significant. He is one of the founding fathers of the Box Hill Hawks; a partnership between the Box Hill and Hawthorn Football Clubs that was so well conceived at its inception, it has endured and flourished with minimal structural change for nineteen years. It is the longest standing and most successful partnership of its type in Australian Football. In 2017 he became just the second President of the Box Hill Football Club to serve in the role for ten years. His period as President has been marked by great on-field success for the Club, the commencement of significant redevelopment of Box Hill City Oval that continues to the present day and the Club’s operation of a player development program that is second-to-none in Australian Football State Leagues that has seen literally dozens of players progress from playing with the Box Hill Hawks to significant A.F.L. careers. Tony is highly respected by the Box Hill Hawks Football Club’s members and has at all times fostered a spirit that has welcomed and embraced the Club’s long and proud tradition while at the same time working tirelessly towards growing and strengthening the Club’s relationship with the Hawthorn Football Club.” The Club also acknowledges Lachlan George who was awarded life membership of the V.F.L. for reaching the milestone of 175 Senior V.F.L. games; which includes 7 games played with the Box Hill Hawks in 2009 and 2010.

One of the great moments of the 2018 season was the 50 year reunion of the 1968 Box Hill Thirds Premiership Team; Box Hill’s first ever
Premiership in V.F.A./V.F.L. competition. Here the Premiership Mustangs gather one more time for a team photograph.

Season Highlights
The most important on-field moment of the 2018 season.
With just one second left before the final siren; Oliver
Hanrahan runs onto a loose ball to goal from the goal square,
tie the scores at full time and send the Elimination Final
against Port Melbourne into extra time. Three weeks later
the Box Hill Hawks claimed the 2018 V.F.L. Premiership.

play A.F.L. Football; he won the Norm Goss Medal as best
player in the 2018 V.F.L. Grand Final and became just the
fourth triple Premiership player in the Club’s history.
