Preface

TESTING READING COMPREHENSION

•C – TESTS

•CLOZE ELIDE

• INFORMATION TRANSFER

C – TEST

• Is a reading test which is as an adaption of the Cloze test,

it copes with reduced redudancy and predict from

context.

• In the C-test certain words in a text are partially deleted

Advantages of C-test• C-test can be generated on small texts with the

large number of items

• It can be objectively scored

• It is much more common for native speakers to be able to score 100 percent

• The C-test is economical and the results obtained are encouraging

Disadvantages of C-test

• There is little empirical evidence of its value

• It is irritating for students to have to process heavily mutilated texts

The Examples of C-test

• to = t_, that = th__

• the = th_, their = the__

• Last Wednesday we deci___ to visit the zo_. We arri___ the next morn__ after taki__ breakf___, cashed in our passes and ente___. We walk__ toward the first exhi___. I look__ up at a gira__ as it star__ back at me. I step___ nerv____ to the next area...etc

CLOZE ELIDE

• Is a technique which is generating interest recently where words which do not belong are inserted into a reading passage

• The candidates have to indicate where these insertions have been made

• In its earlier form, it was known as the intrusive word technique

Advantage n Disadvantage of Cloze Elide

• Advantage ; The candidate does not have the problem of understanding the questions

• Disadvantage ; Scoring is highly problematic

The Examples of Cloze Elide

• When I was being standing at a red light, a yellow car ran over the light and hit a blue car is going through the intersection. The driver of the yellow car he was at fault.............

INFORMATION TRANSFER

• In testing both reading and listening comprehension, the measurement is “ muddied “ by having to

employ writing to record answers

• To avoid this, several Examination Boards in Britain have included tasks where the information

transmitted verbally is transferred to a non-verbal form

Advantages of Information transfer

• It is suitable for testing an understanding of process, classification or narrative sequence

• It is a realistic task for various situations

Disadvantages of

Information transfer

• A good deal of care needs to be taken

• There is a danger of cultural and educational bias

The Examples of Information Transfer

The information transmitted verbally is transferred to a non-verbal form, e.G.

Labelling a diagram

Completing a chart

Numbering a sequence of events, etc

• The use of cloze tests as one of the techniques used to measure the language ability of the learners.

• That teachers as well as pupils should receive enough training in how to use and answer these tests before they start to use these tests.
