From my perspective the major TV networks are too often a conduit for social poison - this certainly applys to the "violence as entertainment" that is so prevalent. This conduit does not run directly into our home but we are all impacted by its effects via others in the community who drink from it daily.

There are many who would be grateful, and many more who would benefit if you would raise the standards for broadcasting in our nation by restricting violence on TV. (Why not use 1960's level violence as a reference point and lead things back a ways in that direction?)

In regard to your inquiries from the public on the effects of TV violence on the youth of our country -

As a child of the 1940's and 1 9 5 0 ' s , I watched cowboy movies in which people were killed. I also watched programs such as "Gunsmoke" and "Dragnet". I never felt that I nor my siblings were affected by these programs.

I also watched the "Three Stooges'' most of my live and feel there is no harm done by their antics. I never attempted to copy them, nor did my siblings.

The difference in programing today is that it is more graphic and many times does not teach a moral. Though many believe that is irrelevant, I believing we are seeing just the opposite in the behavior of our youth. There has been an increase in violence across our country.

In days past, the guilty party was punished - good won out. In todays programing, the guilty is as likely to get away with his wickedness as to be held responsible.

There is no need for graphic violence. Neither children nor adults gain anything from this. Why would we call this e entertaining?

I would dare say there is little regulation by parents of most children regarding their television viewing habits, especially our teenagers, who are probably the most impressionable. I have seen this with my grandchildren and children with whom I work. It seems too much trouble for parents to take time for this.
