TeenMomsIn-SchoolEmotionalCopingSkillsGroupForty-fivepercent(45%)ofadolescentmothershavemoderate-to-severedepression.Decadesofsolidresearchindicatesthatamother’smentalhealthhasasignificantimpactonherpregnancyoutcomes,thedevelopingfetus,emotionalattachmenttoherchild&herchild’sdevelopment,psychologicalhealth,andacademicsuccess.

Wehavecreatedthisskills-basedcurriculumtoaddresstheneedsofpregnantandpostpartumyoungmoms:Tolearnhowtobettermanagetheiremotionsandthoseoftheirchildren;tolerateday-to-daystressors;communicatemoreeffectively,andbuildself-confidenceaswomenandmothers.Thisskill-basedcurriculumisespeciallybeneficialforyoungwomenstrugglingwithdepression,anxiety,chaoticorexploitiverelationships,and/ordifficultymanagingfeelingssuchasanger,shame,andworry.

Ø Prenatal&PostpartumCounselingStudentsmaymeetinpersonorviavideowithcounselorswhohavehadadvancedtrainingsupportingpregnantandpostpartummoms,andhowtorecognizeandtreatprenatalandpostpartumanxietyanddepression.Wehelpthemworkthroughtheirissues,relationships,andnextsteps.

Ø PerinatalPsychiatry&MedicationManagementWhennecessary,apregnantorpostpartumwomanmaybenefitfrommedicationtotreathersymptoms.Ourperinatalmedicationmanagementteamconsistsofaperinatalpsychiatrist,acertifiednursemidwifeandnursepractitionerwhoareregionalexpertsspecializinginbestpracticesconcerningrisksandbenefitsofsafemedicationtouseduringpregnancyandbreastfeeding.Since2003ThePostpartumCounselingCenterhasprovidedperinatalmentalhealthcare,education,&supporttomothers,theirpartners,andfamilymembers.Ourcounselorsandphysicianshaveadvancedtraininginmaternalmentalhealthtosupportandtreatnew&expectingmomsastheycopewiththechallengesofbecomingparents.
