RationaleRationale

When used appropriately, technology has the potential to increase the school counselor’s efficiency and efficacy to further support the current and future educational needs of students.

How?How?

One specific way in which technology facilitates this process is by counselors having access to updated student data to further advocate a plan of action for students.

Student Scenario 1Student Scenario 1

The counselor can identify the student’s high mobility rate ahead of time by analyzing his enrollment data. Therefore the counselor can assist the family to identify issues and possible solutions.

Disaggregation of state assessment data allows the counselor to make recommendations for Advanced Placement curriculum.

(AISD, 2010)

By accessing this student’s English Language Proficiency Test History, the counselor supports educational goals . Most counselors are part of the school’s LPAC (Language Proficiency Assessment Committee) therefore having access to the student’s background will help the counselor be proactive rather than reactive to issues presented at a meeting.

How else?How else?

Technology also facilitates the process in which counselors assign students to courses, what curriculum opportunities are available to the students, help them understand financial opportunities to seek out higher education, and continue to disaggregate data to find patterns and problems that require intervention and attention.

ConclusionConclusion

Analyzing and interpreting data is an integral part of the counselor’s role as this allows for the development of setting high standards ahead of time rather than just attend to objectives and goals as they surface.
