What is GPS? GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a system able to show you your exact position on the Earth anytime ,anywhere, in any weather.

A biologist in Brazil uses a hand-held GPS receiver in wildlife research projects.

GPS System• Space Segment – 24 GPS satellites, orbit at 20,200kilometers above the Earth.• Control Segment –

The satellites are continuously monitored by ground stations located at Hawaii and Kwajalein in the Pacific Ocean

• User Segment – The satellites transmit signals that can be detected by anyone with a GPS receiver. Using the receiver, you can determine your location with great precision.

Distance from a Satellite

1. Synchronize the Satellite &ReceiverClocks

2. Measure Travel Timeof Satellite Signal, t

3. Distance (r) = Speed of Light (c) * t

• Civil Engineering - Road construction, Earth moving, structural placement

- Monitoring structural deformation

• Mining - Drilling blast holes precisely - Open pit mining equipment can be controlled using inputs provided by GPS

Application (Global)

• Primary planned use when the system was conceived• Both military and civilian applications• In the future, all planes, boats, etc. will have GPS installed• Used for

•Route navigation•Safety (collision avoidance)•Automated vehicle navigation

Disadvantage

• in case of ionosphere & troposphere some amount of signal is delay

• Due to multipath communication the travel time increased

• Does not work underground, underwater or indoor
