Project Home Gothic Revival Experior Restored

A New Home For Homeless Women

The new Downtown Women’s Center located in Los Angeles is in a former shoe factory known as the Renaissance Building. Pica + Sullivan Architectsrenovated and restored the six -story Gothic Revival to its 1926 splendor. Originally designed by William Douglas Lee, the building was abandoned before the city purchased it, then sold it to DWC a non -profit organization for a $1. This building has been converted into a facility with 71 permanent supportive housing units, several administration offices and rooms to sup-port the center’s suite of social services for homeless women that need helpwith housing, meals and medical attention.

The 67,000 sq. ft. facility was done with environmental sustainability in mind, largely to keep utility bills low. The building is now LEED Silver certi-fied.

The ground floor includes a state of the art health clinic, a resting area withseveral day beds, a cafe/store where residents will have a chance to work and a main dinning room where the center can expect to serve up to 200 lunches per day for residents and drop-ins. The second floor includes an administration offices, an art room, a computer room to help with on the job training and a roof top garden. The top four floors mostly consists of 71 apartments for permanent residents which include private bathrooms and kitchenette in the main living and bedroom area which are furnished and painted in warm hues of greens and auburns.

Experiential, Social and Tectonics of Sav-On Store

Case Study - Sav-On Pharmacy Programmatic/Space Plan Diagram of Sav-On Store

The exterior building has advertisements in the windows on prices of certain products that can be purchased as well as advertising for 24 hour pharmacy. It is hard to see the product inside of the store because of the lettering in the store front. The exterior of building does not stand out from the rest of the businesses in the strip mall, all of the businesses have the same shape and color. The only thing that is noticeable is the red lettering of the advertisement and the sav-on logo above the windows. There seems to be plenty of parking for all the businesses in the strip mall. Inside the Sav-On drug store the pharmacy area feels dated because of the finishesand materials used in the space such as vinyl tile flooring and acoustic ceilings. The fluorescent strip lighting makes the store feel cold and uninviting. The pharmacy areafeels cluttered because of the random merchandise in front the pharmacy counters such as vitamin supplements in the white wire baskets next to a hat and glove stand and then there is a children’s table and chairs with a plant rack next to it.

Experiential When first entering the store it felt open fresh and clean by having warm light colors of caramel with the view ahead being rows of shelved products. The shelves seemed to have some sort of organization to them with clear labeled signs above the aisles indicating the type of products that are on these aisles. To the right of the main entrance is the pharmacy which is clearly indicated with a large over head sign in dark blue colors. But when moving closer to thepharmacy area it starts to become more cluttered by having cylinder wire bas-kets and other products put in random order in front to the pharmacy counters and also in the waiting area of the pharmacy which has seating as well as a standing area for customers to form a line while waiting to pick-up their pre-scription. The smell when first entering the store had a slight smell of a room fragrance freshener. The music Sav-On plays is easy listening to oldies musicwith advertisements to Osco Drugs which can be bought through their phar-macy in the store. The pharmacy area looks worn and dated which is the op-posite first impression when entering the store. The products on the shelves range from eyecare to sports nutrition. I personally do not purchase prescrip-tion drugs and as for products from the shelves I tend to purchase homeopa-thic and vitamin supplements.

SocialCustomers visiting the pharmacy seemed to be in the age group of mid 30’s to retirement. Mostly women but a few men who looked at though they were retir-ed. The social class were mostly working class to middle class, some women did bring their children with them while they waited for the prescription. While waiting for their prescription in line the customers seemed focused to their task at hand instead of shopping for other merchandise. As for the products by the seating or in front the pharmacy counters no one looked interested in it or pick-ed an item from it. But when observing customers in the aisles people were loo-king at products and asked sales representatives about specific products that they are familiar with. As for the surrounding area of the sav-on store, it is built in a strip mall in Santa Clarita with the outside of all the buildings having the sa-me color a sand colored stucco. Other stores in the mall varied from a laundry mat, Ralphs grocery store, to a jewelry store. The store is on Soledad which is the main street through this area.

TectonicsThe walls of the space are painted a typical off white color with the acoustic tile ceiling and cheap vinyl tile flooring. A soffit exists above the pharmacy area which extends throughout the entire area over the counter prescription area. The lighting in this area consists of 2x4 fluorescent lighting while the other main area of the rest of the store has typical fluorescent strip lighting. The counters of the pharmacy are make of laminate with a light caramel colorwith plexiglas dividers for customer privacy. It seems as though the pharma-cists are on a slightly higher elevation then the customers . The pharmacy counter had one drop off area for the prescription with 5 drug pick up areas which reminded me of a bank by having the dividers and the way people waitin line for their prescription.

The top part could be asoffit for housing lighting or it could be used asan area for signs andadvertising. The rest of the shape is a profile of shelving which gives some intimacy when purchasinga product from this system.

The shape of thissystem adds somefun and interest tothe purchase of a product by havingdifferent anglesform.

The diverse scene of Hollywood blvd is visually and socially complex from the buildings to the people. In Los Angeles, Hollywood Blvd is busier than most streets with foot traffic, and so there is this constantinteraction which happens between people, whether it is people handing out literature about their religious beliefs to tours of movie stars homes. Also, this is the area where people socialize from the trades peopleselling merchandise to struggling musicians and actors. The buildings in this area are just as diverse as the people. The old buildings of the 1920’s, to the era of the 1970’s to the new industrial cool hip bars andclubs sit right next to each other with no order.

From studying Hollywood blvd, there seems to be this pushing and pulling of things whether it is socially, by people communicating, to the giving and receiving of things. There is also the pushing out of old buildings to the pushing in of modern buildings.
