Tagbanua Tribe

•One of the oldest tribes in the Philippines, can be mainly found in the central and northern Palawan

•Tagbanua is a contraction of the words taga which means inhabitant and banua which refers to village or town.

•The Tagbanuas have four prominent and equally important rituals which correspond to the four units of their society:

• Pagdiwata - the relatives or affairs of the clan

• Bilang – family

• Lambay - the community or village, basically a homage to nature gods

• Runsay - the supernatural

History• The Tagbanua may be said to have

undergone three main historical periods:

• the indigenous period, during which there were protohistoric contacts and trade with Hindu-Indonesian culture;

• the Muslim period, which included contacts with the sultanates of Borneo, and the Muslims of Sulu and Mindanao;

• and the Spanish, American, and contemporary periods.

• In the 19th century, the Tagbanua continued to believe in their native gods, specifically in four gods.

1.Magnisda or Nagabacaban - The lord of the heavens.

2.Poco - The god of the sea3.Sedumunadoc - the god of the earth4.Tabiacoud - who lived, in the deep bowels of the

earth.

Analysis

The Tagbanua’s way of life is under pressure with residual discrimination by the local government and its citizens, competition over fishing grounds with the migrants who use destructive fishing methods like cyanide and dynamite, and disrespect by the local tourism industry.

The presence of community-wide norms can enable resource management both by preventing certain behaviours and encouraging others. The term “indigenous resource management system” includes local strategies, institutions, and technologies of farming, gathering, and fishing often embodied in the local language and learned from relatives and neighbours.
