It is our family custom to eat every meal together. The bigger children help set the table.

At mealtime, the family and other members of the household get together to eat, relax and share experiences. No matter how busy each one in the family is, everyone looks forward to sharing a pleasant

meal with each other.

Meal time can be attractive and enjoyable if food had been properly

prepared, cooked, served and set.

At the end of the lesson, the pupils will be able to:

Name the three different styles of table setting and serving ;

Define the word “cover”;

Enumerate the nine table appointments / utensils placed in a cover;

Arrange each table appointment/ utensil in each proper place in a cover;

Appreciate the value of orderliness and cleanliness by observing proper table arrangement or setting and;

Draw and label the table utensils

in their proper place in the

cover.

- Table setting and serving depends on the occasion, number of people who will eat, number of dishes to be served and number of table wares to be used.

Family Style or English Style - This is an informal way of table setting wherein the foods are placed at the middle of the table. Each family member just get what she/he wants on a plate. He may also request passing of a food far from his reach.

Russian Style

- This is a formal way of table setting and serving. This is done in big and formal parties. In this style, a waiter or housemaid serves each dish to the person eating.

Buffet Style

- This style is used when there are many guests. Each one gets his own plate, fork, spoons and food to eat. After which she/he can sit in any place with the people he would like to eat with.

- For some special family get – together or even for everyday meal setting, a centerpiece may be used. This may be a fruit arrangement,

flower arrangement, or green plants on a vase.

A cover is the space

allotted to each person on the dining table together with the table appointments: the dinnerware, the flatware and the glassware.

A cover is spaced 1 inch from the edge of the table about 20-22 inches wide.

Proper Arrangement of Table Appointments / Utensils in a

cover:

Plate – is placed at the center of the cover.

Knife – is placed at the right side of the plate, with its blade or sharp edge toward the plate.

Spoon – is placed at the right side of the knife with its face upward.

Cup and Saucer – is placed at the right side above the spoon.

 Water glass – is placed at the top most part above the knife.

Teaspoon – is placed vertically at the center above the plate with its face upward at the left.

Bread and Butter / Rice Plate – is placed at the left of the service plate above the fork.

Napkin – is placed at the left side after the fork.

Fork – is placed at the left side of the plate with its sharp edge facing upward.

Directions: Draw and label the table utensils in their proper place in a cover (10 pts).

On a ½ sheet of paper (crosswise), write at least 5 rules of table courtesy.
