Workers Create Unions

What is a Union? A group of workers

who join together to make their job better.

Union leaders negotiate with the employers to create better working conditions. This is called

collective bargaining.

Why Form a Union? Workers wanted to

form a union to:1. Create safer working

conditions.2. Receive better pay.3. Health benefits.

Unions wanted to limit the power of the FACTORY OWNERS and gain more rights for the workers.

Problems Creating a Union1. The British

Government did not allow workers to form unions.

2. The British Government believed unions threatened the stability of the country.

3. Those who were part of a union could be jailed or fined.
