In 3 years, more than 3 million Syrians have fled to Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey, the greatest exodus of men, women and children since World War 2. And there is no end in sight.

The number of people forcibly displaced at the end of 2014 had risen to a staggering 59.5 million compared to 51.2 million a year earlier and 37.5 million a decade ago.

Paris 2015 Climate Conference

In 2015, France will be hosting and presiding the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21/CMP11), otherwise known as “Paris 2015” from November 30th to  December 11th. COP21 will be a crucial conference, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement on the climate, applicable to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C.

SRI/ESG – What the CTF is doing (1)

❖ Investment Policy Statement (Nov. 2014) obliges the Consolidated Trust Fund to “avoid investment in companies that could pose a significant ethical concern to the Diocese”, including those that: ❖ Engage in abusive labour practices ❖ Derive more than five per cent of their revenues from sales of tobacco, adult

entertainment (pornography), gambling, controversial weapons, and firearms.

❖ The Investment Policy Statement also requires the CTF, where practical, to promote good environmental, social and governance practices through proxy voting and other means as may be available.

❖ How does this work in practice? ❖ RBC PH&N use the services of Sustainalytics to screen all the CTF’s direct

investments in US and Canadian equities ❖ Investments flagged where there appears to be a conflict with the Investment

Policy Statement ❖ To date, in addition to RBC PH&N’s own screening processes, one investment has

been sold, and one potential purchase cancelled

SRI/ESG – What the CTF is doing (4)

❖ The CTF recently joined the Shareholder Association for Research & Education (SHARE) for the purposes of ❖ Engaging companies in which the CTF (and other SHARE members) owns shares

to improve their Environmental/Social/Governance practices through meetings with management and monitoring responses

What Next?

❖ Over the next year ❖ Participate in the development/implementation of SHARE’s 2016 engagement plan ❖ Work with RBC PH&N and Sustainalytics to

❖ broaden ESG coverage to foreign equities ❖ Within each equities sector, use ESG rankings to replace low-scoring companies with

higher-scoring ones ❖ Implement the divestment of fossil-fuel companies from the portfolio consistent with

❖ CTF portfolio currently includes direct investments in 15 “fossil fuel extraction companies” (2.3% of entire portfolio)

❖ These will be sold off over time and the portfolio rebalanced ❖ Likely result will be some shift from Canadian equities to foreign equities ❖ RBC PH&N opine that the impact would be “nil to slightly negative”

What exactly is Parish Fair Share?

➢Synod's operating budget is funded from investment income, donations, fees and contributions from parishes

➢Contributions from parishes is called "Parish Fair Share“

➢Your parish’s share of the total PFS is the percent that your assessable income is to the total assessable income of all parishes.

So what is assessable income?

➢Assessable income is total income less various deductions and exemptions such as income deposited to Consolidated Trust Fund, capital costs, cost of priestly services

➢Parish Fair Share based on the average of the parish's assessable income for the last three years

➢Three year average used to even out swings

➢ $100,000 included in the 2016 operating budget to provide support grants to parishes demonstrating a need for assistance

➢ A Parish can submit an application to Synod office after consultation with its Territorial Archdeacon

➢ Property and Finance Committee determines amount of support grants at its November meeting based on need and potential

New Type of Support Grant

❖ Provides a grant to help ensure priestly services to parishes/congregations with no incumbent

❖ Bishop appoints an incumbent of a neighbouring parish to be priest in charge

❖ The incumbent supervises one or more part-time priests contracted by the bishop to provide specified priestly services

❖ Called “The Anchor Model”

❖ Currently two parishes are operating under the Anchor Model

❖ Parishes of Eastern Outaouais and Northern Pontiac

❖ $25,000 included in operating budget to support anchor model parishes. See page 219 of the Synod Circular for more detail

Second Century Fund

➢ Fund established in 1996 to support future ministry of the Church in the diocese

➢ Balance end of 2014 was $1.2 million

➢ In the 2016 budget, it was decided not to use it

so it could grow and be available in the future.

How will the Deficit be Handled?

Currently the Operating Fund has a balance of $2,288,349 (see page 76 of the Synod Circular).

Deficit will be charged against this balance.

that this Synod encourage all parishes in the Diocese of Ottawa to become ongoing members of the Anglican Foundation of Canada.

that Synod direct the Property and Finance Committee to divest the Diocese’s holdings in fossil fuel extract ion companies , as def ined by fossilfreeindexes.com.

Carbon dioxide is accumulating in the atmosphere.

Once we burn the next 20%, there will be so much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that climate

change impacts will be catastrophic.

We need to leave 80% of fossil fuels in the ground.
