SUMAK4130:SustainableCitiesFall2017–Wednesdays,4:10–6:00PMInstructorinformationJitBajpaie-mail:http://jitbajpai@gmail.comClassLocation:TBDOfficeHours:byappointmentCurriculumandGradingAssistant(OfficeHourstobeannounced):RiyaSuthare-mail:http://rs3750@columbia.eduCourseOverviewForthefirsttimeinhistoryoverhalftheworld’spopulationlivesinurbanareas.Todaythereareover400citiesofmorethanamillionresidentscomparedto12citiesin1900.By2050theshareoftheworld’surbanpopulationisexpectedtoreach70percent,andmostgrowthwilloccurinthedevelopingworld.Asurbanpopulationgrowthcontinues,urbancentersfacetheproblemsofaginginfrastructure,economicgrowth,changingclimate,congestion,pollution,anddemandsofinhabitantstoenhancetheirqualityoflife.Citiesconsume75percentofworld’senergyandproducealmost80percentofglobalGHGemissions.Inresponsemanycitiesarestrivingtobealowcarboncitywhilesustaininghealthyeconomicandsociallife.Butaddressingthenewurbanagendarequiresanewmodelofcooperationacrosssectorsandalltiersofgovernmenttoredirecttheurbaneconomicdevelopmentintopathsthatarerestorative.Thepurposeofthiscourseistoprepareitsstudentstounderstand,analyze,anddeveloppoliciesandprocedurestoaddressthesustainabilityissuesbeingfacedbyurbancentersofdevelopedanddevelopingworld,theirdecision-makersandinhabitants.

CourseObjectivesStudentsinthecourseareassumedtohavehadnopreviousin-depthexposuretosustainableurbandevelopmentandurbanplanning.Bytheendofthecourse,studentswillhavelearnedthefollowingskillsnecessarytodevelopstrategiesandrelatedactionstoenhancesustainabilityofcities:• Identifyandsupportthegoodpracticesingreenandefficienturbandevelopmentand

planning;• ReviewpoliciesandfostertechnologiesusedtopromoteenergyefficiencyandreducedGHG

emissionsfrombuildingsandtransportation;• Reviewpoliciesandfostertechnologiesnecessarytoensurehealthywaterandsanitation

services;• Examinepoliciesandfostertechnologiesnecessaryfortheeffectivecollection,disposable,

andpossiblere-useofwasteandinpromotingcirculareconomy;

MethodofGradingandEvaluation1. Attendance(10%ofFinalGrade)

Attendanceismandatoryforeachclasssession.Ifyouhavetomissclassforanyreason,youmustnotifytheprofessorbye-mailbeforethestartoftheclasssession.Eachunexcusedabsencewillnegativelyimpactyouroverallgradeintheclass.Twoormoreunexcusedabsencecouldresultinfailuretopassthecourse.

2. ReadingResponses(10%ofFinalGrade)

Eachweek,studentswillpostbrief“ReadingResponses”between250-300wordstotheCourseworksDiscussionpageby11a.m.onedaybeforetheclass.Thesepostswillbesuccinctresponsestothatweek’sreadingassignments,identifyingatleast2keythemesofthereadingandsuggestingoneareaforfurtherclassdiscussion.Readingresponseswillnotbeindividualgrades,butanoverallgradewillbeassignedbasedontimelysubmissionandcompletenessoftheresponses.

3. FirstGroupPresentation:5%

Eachstudentwillberandomlyassignedtooneofthestudygroupstoreviewtheprogressreportofacity’ssustainabilityindicators.Workingasagroup,studentswillpreparea5to7-minutePowerPointpresentationonthegroupassessmentoftheprogressmadeinmeetingthegoalsandtargetsofeacharea.

4. MidtermExamination:25%

Themidtermexaminationwillbetopreparearound10-15pageslong(double-spaced,TimesNewRoman12-pointfont)paperrespondingtothequestionsonanassignedcasestudy.Themidtermexaminationwillbedueatthestartofclassontheassigneddate.

5. GroupProject/Presentation:20%

Eachstudentwillberandomlyassignedtooneoffiveorsixcasestudygroups.Workingasagroup,studentswillpreparea5to7-minutePowerPointpresentationrespondingtothequestionsoutlinedinthecasestudy.

6. FinalExamination:30%

Thefinalexaminationwillbea10-page(double-spaced,TimesNewRoman12-pointfont)paper.Thefinalexaminationwillbeduebye-mailonanassigneddate.

GradingPolicies:Thefollowingidentifieshowpointsawardedtoindividualassignmentstranslateintolettergradesforthecourse:A=93-100,A-=90-92,B+=87-89,B=84-86,B-=80-83,C+=77-79,C=74-76,C-=70-73,D=66-69,F=65orfewerLateAssignmentPolicy:Assignmentsaredueonthedates/timesidentified.Onelettergradewillbedeductedfromanyassignmentsubmittedaftertheduedate/time.Assignmentsnotreceivedbythetimeoffinalgradeswillreceivezeropointsfortheassignment.Incompletes:
