Introducing our NZ Tutors Elizabeth Lau is the Music Director of The Music Association
of Auckland and of the Mozart Orchestra. She is a graduate of
the University of Auckland with BMus (Hons) and PGDipMus
(Perf.) where she studied conducting with Dr. Karen Grylls and
Associate Professor Uwe Grodd. Elizabeth also studied piano
accompaniment with Rae de Lisle and holds degrees on double
bass performance as well as in composition. She tutors Suzuki
piano at St Cuthbert's College, Diocesan school for Girls as well
as her private studio. Her involvement in the Suzuki movement
includes tutoring piano, piano accompanying and conducting in
workshops and conferences in New Zealand and Australia. As a
freelance musician, Elizabeth shares her time between piano
teaching, piano accompanying, conducting, chamber music
coaching and double bass playing
Fleur Chee: Fleur has been involved with the Suzuki Method
both as a parent and teacher for 30 years. She runs a large studio
and is now teaching her grandchildren and several “second
generation” Suzuki students. She has taught at many work-
shops and camps and continues to be inspired and challenged by
the many students she interacts with.
Rachel Walker Braly: Rachel began studying the violin as a 3
year old after attending a concert with her father to see Nadja
Salerno-Sonnenberg play the Tchaikovsky violin concerto.
While her parents had in mind for her to play the piano, nearly 8
months of begging convinced them to find a violin teacher.
Soon after, the Suzuki journey began for Rachel and eventually
her 6 younger siblings. When she was 15 she decided she
wanted to be a Suzuki violin teacher, and began to teach under
the supervision of her teacher Deborah Bennett. Rachel went on
to study at the Florida State University and completed her Bach-
elor of Music in Violin Performance. In 2006, Rachel moved to
New Zealand from the United States with her husband Gabe,
for what was originally a 2 year visit. However, after 2 years,
neither of them could imagine moving back. Rachel has been
teaching a growing Suzuki violin studio in Takapuna, Auckland
since 2007. Since moving to New Zealand she has become a
mother to two boys. She has now approached the Suzuki Phi-
losophy from 3 sides of the Suzuki Triangle, as student, teacher,
and now parent. Rachel lives on Waiheke Island with her hus-
band and two sons.
