Sickle cell disease

• is an inherited disorder that causes the red blood cells to be abnormally shaped and get stuck inside the blood vessels, making it hard to deliver oxygen throughout the body.

• This causes frequent intense pain and can lead to infection and severe complications like organ damage and stroke

• Leads to over a million deaths globally each year

• It is the most common genetic disease in the United States (over 100,000 people) and Nigeria (over 4, 000,000 people).

• Over 10% of children born with this disease die before their 5th birthday.

• Those that get older require comprehensive care for the rest of their lives.

• Estimates place the US financial burden for management of sickle cell anemia as $3 billion annually

• The disease has only one cure (bone marrow transplant) which is very expensive and has several complicated issues surrounding its applications

• Sickle cell disease inheritance pattern

• Religious institutions and courts require couples to have a genotype test before marriage

Social awareness programs

• Carried out to educate people of the possible impact of their relationship and marital decisions on the genetic health of their children and future generations

• Campaigns encourage individuals especially the youths to get tested and know their genotype

• The desired goal is to reduce the amount of the S gene from the population, thereby completely wiping out the disease from the population

• The goal of these programs is not to restrict choices but rather to increase healthy options so that the healthy choice becomes the easy choice
