SUSTAINABILITY
Over seventy years of experience have proved to us that passion and understanding,
combined with hard work both in the vineyards and the winery, are essential to get the utmost
which nature provide. In order to maintain our winery’s growth and to ensure that it may
continue, we have adopted a strategy for both environmental and social sustainability. This
means and enduring commitment, which is now the duty of the whole company to continue to
respect the environment and our responsibility to the greater society.
We have taken on ourselves some important challenges, about which we aim at total
transparency. We shall continue to report on progress as to how we meet these objectives,
relative to our wines and our brands, and how we ensure that our winery continues along an
enduring and sustainable path.
Stay tuned!

50% of emissions associated with a bottle of wine come from the
packaging and transport of glass bottles.
During 2012 Cantine Bonelli made very significant savings in CO2
emissions by reducing the weight of the bottles, as can be seen in this
graph. In 2013 a strategy was planned to reduce the bottles supply
transport distances and to increase the number of bottles with a higher
percentage of recycled materials.

The Due Querce (Two Oaks) vineyards of Cantine Bonelli only grow
indigenous varieties, maintaining the natural environment and traditional
wine making. The ground is home to wild flowers and grasses and
treated only with natural fertilizers. The grasses prevent soil erosion and
allow machinery to operate without damaging the ground, even after
heavy rainfall. Parasites and insects are controlled in the most natural
manner possible, so as to cause the minimum of environmental damage
whilst still protecting the vines.

Wineries can consume a lot of water. Cantine Bonelli strictly controls its
water consumption and in 2013 used 46% less water than the European
average. Specifically two projects have contributed to a saving water: the
new bottling line with high technology machines and the abolition of the
reuse of washed bottles. Both these actions considerably reduce the
impact of the winery on the local water systems. The planting and care of
the vineyards is designed to minimize the need for irrigation. Moreover a
questionnaire accomplished in 2013 proved than many grape suppliers do
not irrigate but in case of extreme need.
