Area Cancer Patients, Survivors and Co-Survivors Enjoy the Healing Nature Found at the Christopher Farm & Gardens! On Wednesday, July 24th a group of about sixty cancer patients/survivors and co-survivors were welcomed to The Christopher Farm & Gardens. Those that attended the event had the opportunity to explore and enjoy the CF&G’s nearly 500 acres along more than a mile of Lake Michigan shoreline that owner, Jay Christopher, has carefully created and meticulously maintained. Rob & Erika from the CF&G provided a casual tour of some of the properties main attractions for those that were interested. Then, we gathered around a firepit (made of steel railroad rails) and Mr. Christopher (seated in golf cart) shared stories and details of the property and answered question while we roasted hot dogs and s’mores!

Thanks to Mr. Christopher’s sincere kindness and incredible hospitality area cancer patients/survivors and co-survivors have been welcomed onto the private property several times a year including winter, spring summer and fall. It has been the perfect backdrop over the past few years for the ST&BF “Survivorship Through the Lens” People’s Choice Photo Contest. Many who attended on Wednesday will be submitting photographs they took during their visit which will be shared through this Local Cancer Community Update and other means so you can vote for your favorite photos in several

divisions and categories! (NOTE: Deadline for submitting photos has been extended from Thursday, August 1st to Monday, August 5th).

People’s Choice Photo Contest winners will be announced on the evening of Friday, September 20th during our next visit to the Christopher Farm & Gardens! Mark your calendar and watch for details. Additionally, survivor-athletes participating in the upcoming “Hiking Along the Cancer Journey” 3-day backpack outing can join us for a one-night preparatory outing on Jay Christopher’s property along the bluff of the Lake Michigan Shoreline Friday night into Saturday morning! “The Path” by Althea Smith

Photographer’s Comments: Along life’s journey there are

many paths we can take. Make the most of the path you are

on. Sometimes we need to sit back and enjoy what God has

provided. Other times we need to forge ahead. The path

can be wide or narrow, but we are not alone.

“From Vine to Wine” by Sue Zalewski

Reflection: We live in a

society that

wants everything

fast. Because of

this we may

forget the

process it can

take to get from

the beginning to

the end result. I

looked at these

bunches of

grapes and

reflected on this

development.

Earlier this spring

these vines would

have been empty.

With the proper

care they are now

overflowing with

healthy bunches

of green grapes.

Later this fall the

grapes will be

harvested and

turned into delicious wine. This process takes time, but it is time that is well

worth the wait.

I am learning the same patience with my cancer journey. I may not always

feel 100%, but I know with time I will feel better. Along the way I will slow

down to enjoy the beauty that surrounds me.

“Whirlwind” by Cindy Becker

Reflection: A diagnosis of cancer places each of us in a whirlwind of emotions.

“Days Gone By Reflection” by Kathy Burch

Reflection: Reflecting back on the journey tells how far I have come. It is amazing how as the time passes the memories of the journey start to fade. But the memories of friendship, striving to be fit, and helping others on their journey have taken over. The crucial element of a journey is having a mission you aim to fulfill that is almost always met with adversity. During those difficult times of the journey, I was inspired by people who have gone before me. People who have made an impression, left a footprint in my life, and most importantly my faith. For "This is the day the Lord has made, Let us Rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24

“Beauty & Strength” by Cindy Kuehlmann

Reflection: Traveling through your journey and ending up with such beauty

and strength

“Tracks of Life” by Althea Smith

Reflection: As we travel thru life, there will be many twists and turns. Take

time to notice the life around you. You can’t change the things behind you

(your past), but the present and future are right in front of you. It is your

choice what you choose!

“Darkness & Light” by Jane Berg

Reflection: I played around with the original picture in lightroom to see what I liked the best as there are so many ways you can edit an image to your personal taste. Here is the final pic with stark contrast between the darkness and the light yet with both areas beautiful on it's own sense.

I ended up with this because it reminds me that with cancer or really any hardship, you can choose to see the beauty in the darkness and also the light or you can choose to only see the darkness. It will not be easy all the time, but don't let cancer win. Let something good come out of this.

I wanted to make sure that Dave's cancer did not make me bitter and although I believe nothing good that comes of his cancer journey will ever be enough to compensate for what we went through, I am well aware that cancer does bring about positive change in you as an individual if you let it. I feel I am a better person now and continuing to make strides towards becoming even better. That will be my legacy to my sweet hubby.

“A Place of Exquisite Beauty” by Tim E.

Renzelmann

Reflection: The Christopher Farm & Gardens is a place of exquisite beauty!

Miriam Webster defines “beauty” as “a combination of qualities, such as

shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.”

By that definition the CF&G is truly filled with exquisite beauty, and yet, that

definition falls short. On this night the true beauty of this space was, I think,

less about what I saw through my eyes (despite all that my eyes had seen)

and more about what I felt with my heart that included the beauty of sharing

(Thank you Mr. Jay Christopher and staff) and extended to the beauty of

togetherness (Thank you to all who participated) to remind me of the beauty

of life (THANK YOU LIFE!)!

“Look Forward While Reflecting

Backward” by Bruce Becker

Reflection: As we concentrate on what is before us, we also need to reflect back on what was behind.

“Life’s Path” by Edson Smith

Reflection: There are times in life where it seems like God has left you only

one path to follow. It is in those times that it seems like that path is very

narrow and dark. But it is in those times that God is preparing you for a time

in the future, up ahead, where there is light, hope, and beauty. So just

remember to keep your eyes, heart and mind focused on the goal that God

has waiting for you.

Photographer’s Comments: This is my best friend who has helped me in my

Cancer journey and is a great co survivor.

“Orange Day Lilies” by Althea Smith

Photographer’s Comments: The flowers on this stem remind me of family.

Sometimes of my immediate family and other times of my cancer family.

Although the same – they are different – in color, size, and level of maturity.

The flowers nearby are family and friends that are near to help and support,

yet not smother. I am grateful for all.

that!?!
